Chapter 7 - Origins of mandalore

The problem with uncovering ancient history, was that although you may discover much in a small amount of time, when your search spanned an entire galaxy for nothing but names and vague memories many would have forgotten. Outside of making discoveries, things would become quite ... slow.

Thankfully, Nox wasn't without several leads, and whilst the name Onrai remained absolutely and unequivocally shrouded in mystery. The name of the Krell and Tuang certainly not as mysterious. Infact he already understood the Tuang to be ancestors of the original species known as Mandalorians. And so they moved from the core worlds to the outer rim, the days of travel spent recounting the memories of the objects taken from Coruscant through psychometry, though there was little else to be gained apart from what Nox was already familiar with.

By the time they dropped out of hyperspace within the Mandalore system, Nox had already fished through every event the objects taken from Notrons surface.

Meeting Scyva in the bridge as she guided the vessel towards the outer rim planet, diving through the hospitable planets atmosphere towards the dome that housed Mandalore's capital city- Keldabe.

" Master, what is it exactly that we are to do once we reach the surface" Scyva asked as they transmitted their landing codes apon their approach.

" We need to trace the activities of the Tuang, Mandalore wasn't the first world they conquered, we need to locate the origional planet they went to after coruscant, that is our objective, anything else we find is to be stored and studied aside from that" His command was clear as the white dome of keldabe loomed over the ship, moving toward a landing platform ready for their use.

Their arrival was met by a trio of mandalorian guards, who offered them a skiff to take into the city as they requested to check the ship for illegal manifest.

" That won't be necessary, the ship is clear" His forced persuasion took effect immediately, the guards in blue turning to eachother.

" There's no need for further checks, the ship is clear" Nox nodded and waved his hand again.

" You will give us access to restricted areas" And so the guards transmitted the codes they had access to, his datapad chiming with a notification that alerted him to the security keys download.

" Much appreciated, Now leave and forget i was here " They looked at eachother, and turned away, taking their own skiff back into keldabe, allowing for Nox and Scyva to step on their own and begin moving into the city.

...

' They've changed quite abit from what I remember them to be' Gone was the strong warriors of Mandalore, replaced eith soft skinned pacifists. Within this dome they lived in teamed with a sofisticated peoples and society that differed greatly from those of memory.

Towers of glass and steel spread in all directions as the skiff flew within the confines of the giant city.

With Scyva at the helm of the skiff, he gazed down at a square where people gathered and interacted jovially.

' So ... much different' He felt a sneer rip across his carefully crafted mask of neutrality, turning away from the sight instead to gaze upon the balconies and buildings that stretched upwards and over.' They really made use of all the space in here didn't they'

' I had thought I would be meeting kindred spirits, instead i'm met with what they've become' Frustration crawled through his thoughts, mixed with disappointment.' A pity, what idiot demilitarizes one of the greatest warrior societies in the galaxy'

" I have connected to the net, they appear to have several historical records kept in codex's within their library" Scyva turned to face Nox whom leant his head to the side slightly.

" Take us there, since you're connected to their net now, do you mind telling me exactly why the Mandalorians made the mistake of changing their ways" He watched a child fall over and immediately begin to cry, their parents rushing over to them and doting on them' The mandalorians I know were never so weak willed'

" Of course master" And so Scyva, translating the data she was downloading enmasse, Informing him of the rather recent event to have taken place.

How due to the recent uninhabitablity of their world, duchess Kryze Satine lead the creation of the ' New Mandalorians ' Demilitarizing their entire planet and becoming a pacifist state all in one fell swoop.

What he did take away however was that not all was lost, listening as the skiff turned through the air towards a large museum woth several gardens surrounding it, he listened as Scyva spoke of the traditionalists who banded together in disagreement with the duchess before their banishment at her decree.

" And where are these pure Mandalorians located " Listening to their description, they sounded almost exactly like the Mandalorians of old he was used to, chuckling to himself at the differences and their actions." I Can't wait to meet them"

...

Emptier than he thought it would be, a large carnivorous dinosaur like skeleton stood at the centreal piece of the main chamber of the library.

Though Nox and Scyva drew attention, mainly through the sheer sophistication of Scyvas body, Nox and his loyal servant made their way through the doors of the museum.

His stride carried him until he stood infront if the giant skeleton and several others suspended from the ceiling.

Giant tusks mounted its skull, Whilst restored teeth showed how this creature may have potentially fought and looked.

" So this is the mythosaur huh, smaller than what I would have expected... " He looked toward the plaque infront of the display.

' Ancient rulers of Mandalore, the Mythosaur represents the might needed to survive such harsh ecosystems. Driven to extinction by our ancestors.. ' Nox finished reading as Scyva walked away to access the nearest dataport.

" Beautiful aren't they" A blonde human woman strode up to his side, blue eyes rising to stare at the tusks of the beast." it's a shame there aren't anymore of them don't you think "

" It is a shame" He would have liked to fight one, he'd fought the greatest beasts the galaxy had to offer, quite enjoyed the hunt actually. Missing one of these legendary beasts was quite the let down.

' Though there are few adversaries that are truly worth the hunt' Beasts like the collosal monolith or ancient machines come to life with scornful wrath were particularly appealing.

" Perhaps they could be revived through artificial means" The well dressed woman in a blue gown looked at him with a curious brow.

" Do you mean cloning" To her knowledge few species were capable of proper cloning, far too much money and research went into such things for little return.

" That would be the most direct and effective method, or you could find a close enough relative and splice their DNA, there are plenty of methods to bring such a creature back. Though yes, cloning would be the most authentic method" Nox shrugged, watching Scyva access a dataport and begin a mass download.

" You speak as if you have such knowledge of those practices" Nox turned to the blue eyed woman, whom had turned away from the skeleton and was now studying him closely.

" I pride myself in having experience and knowledge of ... a wide range of subjects. Politics, sciences, history... learned knowledge without putting such knowledge to use ... well that's just stupid" His gaze stared into the woman's with blazing intensity before his gaze slowly turned back to the skull of the beast.

" Falicity harrwood" Nox heard the woman speak again, Noticing that she had her hand extended in greeting.

Without hesitation he shook her hand and introduced himself.

" Its lovely to meet you Falicity, you may call me Kaiwan" A fake name for someone who he didn't truly care to talk to, she introduced herself as a historian that worked tirelessly to uncover the history that grew more and more distant with each passing moment.

" Well mister Kaiwan, I have to ask, why the interest in these old bones here, not many tourists hold interests in sights such as these " Falicity pressed, he stood out like a sore thumb. Not many with such poise or presence would bother to spend their time staring at old fossils.

" I'm a scholar above all else dear. Infact it's the reason I'm here today. Old history and beliefs about the old mandalorians say alot, my findings say differently" Nox turned his gaze subtly to Svyva who had completed her download and was making her way over.

" Oh ... perhaps we can have exchange of knowledge once you have found solid proof of your findings" Falicity hinted, who she herself took notice of the approaching droid" Now that is a high tech piece of technology"

" I would appreciate it if you referred to me as a lady, organic" Falicity twitched at Scyva's rude response, Tilting her head slightly.

" Please forgive my droid. Due to the necessity to record my findings she has never experienced a mind wipe, it shows" Nox covered for the amount of uncharacteristic amount of personality displayed by Scyva.

" Is that safe, how long has she gone without one" Droids became dangerous when their behavioural matrix's became overloaded with information, thus requiring somewhat infrequent wipes lest they develop in strange ways.

" Prefectly , and since her birth I suspect" Nox shrugged" I haven't had her for long compared to that time"

" That would be correct" Infact she would never need one, with the entirety of Iokath serving as her datafortress, she could store more data than any computer in the galaxy combined and boosted a thousand times.

" Well ... as I said, if you're interested in an exchange of knowledge, feel free to reach out. It's rare finding someone with similar interests in a place such as this" With that Falicity departed, marching back into the faculty zones that the public wasn't allowed in.

" I do believe that organic was quite interested in more than just an exchange of knowledge milord" The Sass in her tone was clear, watching the mandalorian-human descendant wlak through a security gate.

" Really ... I hadn't noticed" He turned and began to walk with Scyva toward a security gate at the opposite side of the museum, that lead into the databanks containing their restricted files on their historical documents.

" Would you not like to take her up on her offer, she seemed a fine specimen" Scyva asked as a wave of Nox's hand allowed them entry through the gate, illusions weaving around the two of them as they marched into archives.

" I hold no interests in woman with no status or titles to their name. Some nobody in the crowd with a pretty face means nothing to me, I desire someone that would boost my already expansive foundation. A monarch, a warrior without peer. Someone who can add to what I have rather than leech off me" Nox shrugged, turning left and passing by another gate, stepping into a room where walls apon walls of glowing blue databanks were embedded in the walls."would that woman have given me that"

" I suppose not milord" That narrowed down the list into less than triple digits of people that met Nox's standards." Would you fornicate with someone such as the duchess"

" Perhaps if she could be brought to my way of seeing things, and Mandalore fell under my control... but as it stands, No ... " Nox shot down the question, pacifists went against nearly everything he believed in, those unwilling to fight, to take what they desired as theirs, might as well roll over and let those with strength tell them what to do, he couldn't imagine living like that.

...

For several minutes, they pulled databank after databank from the wall, scouring its contents before moving on to the next.

Each one spoke of different times in mandalorian history, of planets they conquered and civilisations that fell to their weapons and wardroids.

Until finally, Scyva opened a datacron containing little to no information, apart from small amounts of text and a starchart.

" Milord, I believe I have found what we are looking for" Projecting the star chart, Scyva showed several planet's highlighted from their studies of mandalorian history, planets they had travelled to and from around the time Mandalore was conquered.

Several worlds glowed, a clear and concise traceable path that lead to a rather interesting place Nox had encountered in sith related material.

" That ... certainly narrows it down. I can name a total of three planets located behind that cloud " The cloak of the sith, aptly named because it was where the brotherhood of the sith called home, the centre of their barely passable empire.

" Let's see there's Igoon, Kaloo ... and Roon " Their departure from the restricted section of the historical databanks was swift, passing by droids and security without being discovered, stepping out into the setting sun of mandalore, blanketing the city they were on with stretching shadows and people returning to their accomodations.

" Are you sure you wish not to interact with the duchess, perhaps she can serve in a way such as an animal to be conquered " Refering to the duchess as more animal than organic amused Nox slightly, but his head shook in the negative.

" No .... We already have to check out these true mandalorians before continuing, wasting time with a woman whom I'm sure will drone on about politics is on the bottom of my too do list... " They stepped on the skiff that brought them to the museum, turning it around before making a swift departure from the area.

...

Apon their return to the landing pad, they were met with an interesting sight, Several gangsters stood infront of his ship, Analysing it with praise.

The skiff announcing their arrival, the apparent leader of these ruffians turning to them .

" Nice ship you got ere, thanks for giving to us" A member of the Mandalorian crimeworld, a man with expensive clothing and a mocking jeer, turned from studying the X-70 b, his associated raising their blasters at Nox's face.

" oooo " Nox sarcastically waved his hands in mock fright before slinging a bolt of lightning right into the gangsters face, melting it on the spot before a force push threw the rest of the gangsters flying off of the platform.

" Don't touch my fucking ship" They boarded the ramp and vacated immediately after, leaving the underworld to wander what happened to one of their black market dealers.

...CONCORDIA - MANDALORE SYSTEM...

" My lord it seems that despite the Duchess request to demilitarize, the people of this moon appear to have several stockpiles of weapons in their mines" Her scanners boosted by the X-70 that passed over said mines, she easily picked up on the hidden deposits.

" Good so they're not as toothless as one would think" He hung his head in relief, Crossing his arms behind his back" Inform the minister... I wish to converse with him"

...

Their arrival was met with a far more organised and guarded response, old mandalorian guards approaching with weapons in hand as Nox descended the ramp.

The hostility in the air was clear, he was certainly not welcome within this small community of old mandalorians.

" Vacate immediately, this is a restricted area" One of the hidden deathwatch members serving as a guard hissed, intent on keeping their actions hidden as they planned to take back their rightful home.

" I think not ... " Nox shrugged, reaching for an ornate blade housed within the X-70 b, which came flying to his grip from within the ramp of the vessel.

" I wish to test the mettle of those who call themselves mandalorian... let's see how you hold up" Canvas unwound from the ornate blade he had pulled to his grip.

Alchemically enhanced, runic scripture shon deep red against the ancient sith warblades blade, with Nox gripping it's handle and preparing to attack the hidden deathwatch, wanting to meet them in fair combat.

This wouldn't be a battle of the force, but a battle through sheer martial might and dominance over one's opponent. There was nothing grester than beating a foe at what they specialised in.

And so he rushed forward, far slower than he would have had he been channeling the force, Feet thumping across the ground as he swung the warblade at the guards neck.

Blood rushed as the guard jumped back, several ston blasts shooting in quick succession that Nox wound around, sticking low as his blade carved a sparking trench in the landing pad.

The guard leant to the as his blade thrust at their chest, yet Nox smirked as he rotated the blade slightly and bashed the flat of the blade into the guard's armoured plate, sending them back with the sheer strength housed in his frame.

Skidding back, the guard grunted in frustration, pulling out a baton before rushing at Nox with silent hidden thrill.

" Yes that's it, I see the old mandalorian ways in you, you do not disappoint" Nox laughed as other deathwatch members arrives to see the commotion, seeing Nox bat away the baton and jab an elbow into the guards stomach.

" Gerch " Metal bent around Nox's elbow as the guard doubled over, falling to the side as Nox's leg swept around and knocked him off his feet.

" Ah " Nox rose, pointing his warblade down at the guards chin, who looked up at him with shock at how easily he had fallen." You don't disappoint, you leave some to be desired but .. it's passable"

He looked up at the gathered guards and people posing as regular outcasts, but they way they looked, he could tell they were secretly guaging him.

" What is going on here" Pre Vizla trade our of the compound he and his secret faction called home, seeing the guard on the floor woth Nox standing over him.

" My apologies, I wanted to see if the rumours surrounding the fall of the real mandalorians was real" He handed the warblade off to Scyva whom rewrapped it back in its canvas casing.

" I'm afraid you're mistaken traveller, you find no mandalorians here" Vizla defended, only for the humour on Nox's face to vanish the next moment.

" You're lying " Without so much as asking, he reached forward and forcefully ripped the information from the governers mind, who promptly collapsed in pain, holding his head in anguish and soul searing pain." see, that's what happens when you lie... though ... I am pleased with your death watch..."

He looked up and around, seeing the surrounding previously watching people to now be brandishing blasters in his direction.

" Ahah " He waved his hand, dragging their blasters from their grips all at once, dropping all the blasters at the ground at his feet" None of that now "

" Y... you're jedi" A red haired woman coming forward, only to scream out in pain as lightning suddenly qrapped itself around her body.

" Don't ever insult me like that again" He kept the barrage for three more seconds before letting the surge fall." I am no jedi"

" You know what" He noticed the hostile gazes of those standing around, and all at once, they collapsed as lightning jumped from him and struck every single one of them in the chest all at once." I don't appreciate the stares"

He dusted off his hands, listening to the groans of pain, the ragged breaths that encapsulated him.

" Now... " He dragged Vizla up by the force and planted him on his feet directly before him" Mister leader of the death watch, what keeps you from taking mandalore back, you don't really fear the duchess and her forces do you ... or is it something else"

Listening to Nox's questioning, Vizla realised he and his group had well and truly been discovered.

" True mandalorians don't fear an army greater than our own" He slat to the side, his features shifting from a kindly governer to a hardened warrior." But we are not foolish... without support, the republic would side with them and neutralise our threat before our reign could even begin"

" Oh I see so it's cowardice" Nox mocked, laughing out loud despite Vizla's anger.

" You ... "

" Why didn't you just say you were afraid that you didn't really have any right to challenge the current government" Nox held his chest, shuffling his laughter and amusement." I ... in my magnanimity, have a proposal"

" You wish to lay claim to the title and place as the leader of mandalore, but everyone knows that without the mask of mandalore, that any claim to the title of mandalore itself is without merit and standing, exiled group or not, im pretty sure that with the Helmet of Mandalor , anyone who identifies as mandalorian is honour bound to answer its call "

" Nobody has seen Mandalore's mask since the days of old, tradition has changed"Vizla spat back, grunting. If he had the helmet his goals would be alot alot simply.

" Yet tradition stands... " Nox pressed, fingerings his chin amd looking around as the others of deathwatch slowly rose from the ground, the lightning causing them to spasm on the ground finally dispersed.

" Why do you ask this, why do you care ... why even come here at all, surely it wasn't to gloat" Vizla looked back at Bo, checking her over for the moment before turning back to Nox.

" Because I want something from you of course, and I reward those who act well in my stead" Nox shrugged, his appraisal of the group and what they could do for him finally concluded.

" What could possibly make me even consider doing your bidding, you just" Vizla prepared to deny Nox entirely, he and his brethren wouldn't listen to just anyone, Wether they had strange powers or not.

" Scyva " At his request the droid stepped forward, A hologram lighting up from her right hand to show a particular piece of armour currently in a display case on Iokath.

The resistance building within Vizla washed away as he was gifted the sight of a piece of armour lost to their people, the only true right long since stated to give one the right to lead their people, the helmet of Mandalore the Ultimate.

" I...is this real" He stared at the hologram and the display case within, lips quivering at the sight.

" Without any trace of doubt, I authenticated it years ago... I just never really wanted to claim mandalore for myself" Nox watched as Vizla didn't break eye contact with the hologram, the other deathwatch members coming closer to see the holo before whispers broke out amongst their ranks.

" I ... I want to see it for myself ... only then will I consider anything that you have to say" Though in reality, if Nox truly had what he said, then he'd be he'll bent on acquiring it through any means necessary, and given this man's strange powers, he knew he'd most likely end up akin to a servant. But their goals were beyond simply personal hubris, he'd do it for them.

" That can be arranged" He turned to Scyva who nodded " One of my ships will be here in a week to showcase the authenticity of the helmet, it would be wise of you not to have any funny ideas, and when I return here one month from now... I expect your stance to have changed considerably " He turned away and began to walk the small distance back to the ships ramp.

" Wh...where are you going" Nox stepped over the still laying guard, stepping on his stomach with a chuckle.

" My business is done here, we have nothing to discuss until my claims have been verified, so I'll return when they have been. Oh ... and one more thing" He waved his hand at the group, voice twisting as he spoke the next words.

" Remember this conversation only when I return, do not attack or attempt to steal the mask of mandalor or those transporting it" Their faces went blank as he pushed the suggestion apon their minds, turning back to the ship.

They stood there until the ship had already left the planets surface, The group blinking their eyes in confusion several minutes later.

" what are you all standing around for" Vizla looked around in confusion at their gathering, dispersing the group and storming back Into his compound.

...ROON - 2 WEEKS LATER ....

They had first travelled to kaloo, but apon discerning that much like mandalore, it wasn't the first planet inhabited by the Tuang, Nox moved to the second, Iqoon which was happened to have the same circumstances.

That left only the planet roon left, Coincidently the last and furthest planet located in the dust cloud called cloak of the sith.

The ship landed on the smuggling world with many eyeing it on both curiosity and weariness.

" Stay with the ship, I wouldn't trust these locals to guide my father into my mother, let alone not try to steal my ship" And so Nox departed alone, stepping onto the perpetually night covered small city that smugglers frequented.

" Greetings, any idea on the location of any architectural sights" The rodian that met him blinked strangely, its bug like eyes blinking in confusion before responding in its alien tongue.

" Useless " The rodian promptly exploded into chunks, followed by Nox immediately departing to search for historical sites.

It wouldn't be until another week passed that Nox found that he saught.

....

He stood before a gargantuan an ancient machine under ocean, what appeared to be a destroyed construct larger than most starships, it sat at the centre of a sunken city. It was the base of half an eclipse connected to the ground, yet appeared incomplete.

He swam closer to the ancient construct, hand reaching for the construct in curiosity, sensing the echo of the past before he sunk into the ripple in time it housed.

....

They stared, at the final remaining pocket of their terrible enemy, on the lava covered planes of Notron, the victors. The last of the Zhell stood alone, their species on the cusp of extinction should this last band of Zhell fall.

Rexutu stood at their head, staring down at this final pocket holed up in their battlements, attempting to prepare to flee through the hyper gate that rested behind their settlement.

" TEAR THEM DOWN" Rexutu roared, and as one their war band rushed forward, spears mounted in their hands as they fell apon their enemies.

They sprinted with haste, as the hyper gate began to power up, a swirling blue nebula began to form at the centre of the gates form.

They arrived just in time, cutting off their fleeing enemy, spearing through the fearful cowards in one fell swoop, cutting down every one of them until the last fell at their leaders blade.

As they stood atop the corpses of the dead race, Rexutu hefted his spear to the skies and roared a roar, representing the screech of a war band leader that had spent the last three years butchering the enemy to the last.

They celebrated before the still active hyper gate, Mocking their fallen foes and dancing in victory.

Yet during their victory, things were not as they seemed.

Yet their sound victory was not to last, as they stood apon the land of dead before the hypergate, in the distance she appeared.

No longer did she appear benevolent before those that worshipped her, nor did she come bearing the gift of life or protection for them for them. Instead she had come as their unmaker.

Draped in lime stars, her green skin moved, her hand swung and the world shifted at her will.

She spoke no words, as he long hair cascaded through non existent winds, rather she spoke through simple action, a single action.

" Blessed Mother Onrai" They recognised the woman, with the tuang priests confused at her actions. But answers came the next moment.

As all around, humanoid shapes suddenly appeared, remade with a simple expression of will. Force made into physical living matter as the cosmic force was torn open and its contents stolen without resistance.

The enemy they had driven to extinction at this very moment, the enemy that had stolen their homeworld through conquest, was restored in an instant.

With a mere wave of the great mother Onrai's hand, the entire race destroyed over the last two years was remade and cast to the mortal world once more before the terrified eyes of the tuang.

The dead had risen, hundreds, thousands and millions , all of them returning at once.

" The gods betray us " One tuang fell back in surprise at the shock of the scene, the revived species of Zhell turning to them all at once in combined fury.

" THROUGH THE GATE, QUICKLY" They watched Onrai seemingly fold in on herself, vanishing into the stars she had come from as the entire species of Zhell rushed them all at once.

And so they fled through the Hypergate, fleeing through the gate to rune as their enemy charged.

" DESTROY IT" Rexutu cried, as they rushed to destroy the gate that had save them but would soon give them their deaths.

They final moment the memory contained was the destruction of the hypergate.

....

Nox returned to the present of the sunken city, what remained of that destroyed gate now being the container of the portal.

' Interesting technology, a shame that it is lost' He pondered, but an idea surface in his mind as he stared at the half eclipse.' Actually maybe not so'

The flashes of the hypergate given to him wasn't the only time he had seen such a phenomenon.

Millenia ago he had been aprt of a strike team, sent to destroy a beast of unknown origin... It had stepped through a portal built of alien technology they knew not the identity of, until they discovered it was called a hypergate, they couldn't however find a way to reverse engineering the technology and so left it to the gree who presided over it.

' So there was more than one hypegate this whole time ' He tread water as he thought, beginning to swim to the surface, he should have expected it, the gree had been quite evasive about how they travelled, about their technology and especially the hypergate itself.

' I believe it be best I make contact with the gree now' He vanished from under the waters of roon, appearing within the X-70b the next moment.

" Milord, where shall we go now" Scyva approached him as he was undressing, shedding the wet tunic he wore in favour of a simple set of warm pants and shirt.

" Believe it or not, we're going to Asation ... the gree enclave " Anythinf the Tuang could offer was dried up, he had found whatvhe sought, and se altered his objective accordingly.

The mystery of hoe the Tuang had relocated from Notron to Roon was been solved, revealing the use of the Gree machine. Thus concluding that chapter of missing knowledge in his mind.

However as he sat down, in white clothing warm to the touch, he was left with several more questions he desired answers to. Who was this Onrai, what were her intentions and why did she appear a savior to some and act different to others. Why had the Gree kept the secrets of other hypergates existences to themselves when they had been asked if there were any other threats like Lohtek'k. Whilst the trail of the first questions had gone dry for the moment, Nox had a sneaking suspicion that he might find answers not only about the hypergates from the Gree, but more knowledge about this enigmatic Onrai.

' They had better, otherwise I'm left in the dark about a being who not only can see through tine and space through someone's memories, But also knows I exist ... ' And that thought made him rub his chin in silent anxiety.

As the ship lurched into hyperspace with a loud thoom, Nox sat back and closed his eyes in ponderance.

" Alert me apon our arrival at Asation "
