Chapter 22 - A Meeting With The Mistress of Blood

"Oh great just what I needed today," D said as he let out an exasperated sigh and threw his bag onto one of the many empty seats near the desk at the front of the room.

"What do you want?" Scarlett said, eyeing him contemptuously as she stood behind in between the front desk and the whiteboard which she'd been writing on for an empty class.

"Hmm what do I want lets see, world peace, end world hunger, and oh yeah to find the professor I came here to see. Not you." D said throwing up a counting finger for each of his mock wants.

"Well you're out of luck, Professor Frederickson already took off to the teachers living quarters." Scarlett said with a stuck up smile, as she went back to finish the formula she'd been writing on the board.

"God, this was such a waste" D said in defeat as he, for some reason, sat down in one of the close black and red velvet seats near the front and pulled up the show he'd been watching that'd made him late.

This show was about people having to do escape rooms for ludicrous amounts of money. D had made the mental comparison of this island and an escape room, except he most likely wouldn't be getting paid when he finally broke out of this place.

Scarlett watched D out of the corner of her eye and let out a strangled sigh, noting that he probably had forgotten that she was a TA and knew just about everything there was to know about this class.

"So...if you're here to see Professor Frederickson why are you still here?" She asked in a dismissive tone.

"You really expect me to walk all the way back to my place with no break in between?" D placed his feet up on the seat next to him and got more comfortable. "Not happening."

Scarlett mused, technically as a TA she could tell him to leave and if he didn't listen she could get a teacher, but at the same time D was a student in the class so she technically had an obligation to help him with his studies. Her mind drifted as she tried to focus on what she was writing, it drifted to thoughts of her giving D the help he so desperately needed if his course work was anything to go by.

"Listen, if you need help, and God know you really do, I can help you out." At those words D gawked at her like she'd started speaking another language entirely.

"There is no way on earth I'm taking your help, I'll just catch Professor Frederickson next time." D said cozying up in the velvet seat he'd taken claim in.

"Yeah, but-" Scarlett stopped herself momentarily, why was she trying to help this boy? Why did she still find herself wanting to help him? She didn't know.

"The next time Frederickson has office hours is after the test coming up, you need help before then, and...I guess as TA it's my job to help you get better...at math I mean."

Not wanting to hear what she had to say, and no thoroughly uninterested and unfocused on the show he was watching D sat up and began gathering his bag onto his person and marched straight for the door.

Scarlett stopped her writing and stepped in front of the door, blocking his path with her own body. "What? Are you just going to run away? Again?" Scarlett asked him arms spread out to cover the doorway.

D chewed on his lip with anger as he said, "I'm not running from anything. I just don't need to be helped by you!" He yelled as he pointed at her. Scarlett flinched as he did causing D to put his hand back down.

"What are you afraid? Afraid of me after what happened between us? Hah!" D began howling cackle at the thought that she was now afraid of him after their fight on the edge of the island all those days ago.

"I'm not- I'm...whatever, if you want to fail go ahead and fail!" She said stepping out of the way letting D burst past her into the doorway, but as he walked into the hallway something in his mind stopped him. 'Am I just running away again?' He thought deeply to himself.

He looked back at Scarlett who just stood in the doorway looking at him, a slight softness in her hard gaze. She had tried to help him he guessed, but she was an enemy. Hell as far as he was concerned besides Clea she was THE enemy.

He fully turned to face her, curiosity momentarily winning out over his need to get away.

"How'd you even become a TA? I know you said they kicked your butt out of the Spire's little group after I fought but why try to help people? In a place like this?"

Spire clenched her fists lightly as she said, "because helping people is what I do, even in a place like this." She said a small smile lacing her face at the humorous thought that here she was, a trained villain and killer and she was just trying to help this loser with his math homework.

D looked at her for a moment, and said nothing. The smell of the dust in the hallway was slowly becoming too much for him to bare and he guessed she really did want to help him so he yielded. D walked back through the doorway and sat his bag down.

"Fine, you want to help me? I'll use you to get an A in this class" A cocky coy smile escaped from his lips as he said that, a reflex he wasn't able to fully stop.

"Good, that's what I'm here for." Scarlett said as she wiped away the advanced formula she'd been writing on the board. She figured D would need something...a lot simpler.

And thus began D's impromptu lesson with the woman who'd taught him his first lesson about this place all those days ago on that beach.
