Chapter 23 - A Little Lesson

"No, no no...That's not how you do it" Scarlett said as she walked over to the board and took the marker pen from D's hand and erased the beginning of the equation he was writing on the board. She'd agreed to tutor him, and that's exactly what she planned on doing.

"Look over the initial stages, what did you forget to do here?" She asked as she pointed at the board with the tip of the marker.

"I uhhh, forgot to...uhhhh carry the 2?" D asked as he stood before the board with hand to his chin.

"Yes, exactly! Good stuff D." Scarlett said as she began rewriting his equation with the correct terms and carrying properties. She refrained from telling him that he'd also used the wrong trigonometry sign, but she figured a small win was what he needed right now.

D walked away from the board and sat down in the teacher's chair in the center of the room and spun around in it a few times. Scarlett giggled at his down right child like antics, as she began writing another equation on the board. One from one of her classes and began to solve it.

They had agreed to take turns solving separate equations and then take turns solving them, he would do one's from his class and she would do one's from hers. In between all the math they were doing they began to grow a bit less hostile.

"So what was the deal with you guys keeping me from going to jail? How'd you even know where to find me?" Was one of the first things D had asked her.

"The school has tons of resources, police scanners, satellite imaging. It really wasn't that hard to find you after the call had came in about your...you know."

"My dad...Yeah..." He got up from the chair, no longer feeling like spinning in it. He walked over to the desk near the white board and sat down on top of it, a sense of freedom coming with the action.

"Listen, if you ever want to talk about...that. I'm here" Scarlett said looking over at D in the corner of her eye. She pretended like she wasn't staring at him under her long red locks of hair.

"Don't worry I wont, I don't want to talk about any of that...ever..." Was all he said as he walked up to her and stood next to her. This was as the closest they'd been since their fight on the beach all those weeks ago. She could feel the warmth of his body heat licking at her skin, which in turn only made her heat rise.

She stepped away from him, for if she didn't she felt like she might explode. She didn't quite understand her feelings towards him, they were caught somewhere between hate and understanding.

Since he'd asked her a question she realized it was now her turn to ask him a question.

"What's the deal with you and Max? Are you guys friends?" She asked as she played with one her long locks around her finger tip.

"Yeah, me and him are friends I'd say. We had a bit of rocky start due to this whole party situation but we're good now."

"That's good, he's so tall I don't know how he gets around." She said in a joking tone.

D laughed as he said, "I've seen him duck under more doors than anyone I've ever seen in real life before."

The both shared a momentary laugh together at how tall Max was. Then the room slowly returned to quiet as Scarlett erased her equation and tossed the marker to D who walked up to the board and began writing an equation from his notebook.

"So what's the deal with Spire- or Clea I mean, what does she want?" Was what he asked as he drew on the board.

"In simple words? Power, that girl is obsessed with getting as much power as she can get. Her running for student president is just another way she can get more of it." D just let out a long whistle.

Before D could finish writing his equation a knock sounded on the door to the lecture room. Both of them hadn't been expecting someone so the noise had caused both of them to jump slightly.

Scarlett walked over to the door and opened it up, forgetting that it had ended up locking when one of them had shut it before starting to write their equations.

She opened the door and Val stood there stone faced, unlike her usual cheery self. Nashoba stood behind her looking down at his V-band as if he were tracking something.

"Is D here?" Was all she said as she eyed the shorter red haired woman.

As he heard her voice D dropped the marker and slide over to the edge of the whiteboard and gave a wave.

"Hey guys what's up?"

Val just looked at him sternly and said through gritted teeth, "We had a meeting...and you missed...it."

Nobody said anything for a long moment.

D immediately sensing that Val was not playing around today began packing up his things and erasing the board. Scarlett bowed her head slightly and apologized.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to keep him so long," She stepped a bit closer to Val and Nashoba and placed a hand over her mouth as she whispered, "He needed A LOT of help..."

"It's fine Scarlett don't worry about it" It was all Val said to the red haired woman as D slipped passed her and the three of them began walking down the hall.

When they'd gotten a few paces away, Val turned to D and looked like she wanted to attack him.

"You talk about Clea being a threat, and then you go and play tutor with someone who used to work right under her? What in the world is wrong with you?!"

"It was just to help me get an A on this test early next week, honest, and honestly she's not so bad...y'know?"

Nashoba cut in "Not so bad? NOT SO BAD? You wouldn't know bad if it tried to kill you with a little red blob, oh wait she did try that!"

"Ugh, whatever...what did I miss at the meeting." D asked Val, she was turned away not looking at him as she said...

"I'm not going to be able to participate in the trials with you..."
