"Doctor, what do you mean you are sorry? How is David?
The doctor's expression
gave nothing away.
"Your employee is out of surgery," he said, his voice neutral and professionally careful. "We've done what we can."
Marcus's hands clenched at his sides. "Is he alive?"
"He's alive. He is critical but stable. The next twenty-four hours will tell us more." The doctor said.
"Can we see him?" Aria asked.
"Not yet. He's in the ICU, sedated and on a ventilator. The damage was extensive."
"But he's alive."
"For now. We're monitoring him closely."
After he left, Marcus sank back into the plastic chair, the adrenaline that had been sustaining him finally draining away.
"He made it through surgery," Aria said, sitting beside him. "That's something."
"That's not something. That's another person destroyed by getting close to this investigation."
"David knew the risks," Dmitri said quietly. "He's been investigating for years. He chose to reach out."
