Chapter 23 - Retribution

The resistance fighters came at night, their faces stern, their voices decisive.

Their leader approached Yusuf and said in a tone that brooked no argument:

"It is time for retribution."

Khalid understood immediately.

He froze in place, his face pale as ashes, then began to tremble, muttering broken words:

"No... no... not now... please... I was forced... I swear... I swear..."

Yusuf approached, his eyes a mixture of anger and sadness.

"Khalid... you had a choice. You chose a house in Tel Aviv... in exchange for the blood of your family and your land."

Khaled cried out, tears streaming down his face:

"They threatened me! I had no choice!"Yusuf replied sternly:

"You always had a choice. Your mother... Your mother exposed you because she refused to bear your shame. Today... we are continuing what she started."

The resistance fighters dragged him to the corner of the tunnel.

He tried to resist, but his weak body could not hold out.

He shouted at the top of his voice:

"Forgive me! I want a chance! I want to live!"

Daniel stood stunned, his body frozen, his heart pounding in his chest like a drum.

He had never seen anything like this before: a man facing death for his betrayal, not in battle, but among his own people.

The sound of gunfire echoed deep in the tunnel... and it was all over.

Khalid fell silent, his eyes bulging, as if searching for a life he did not know how to preserve.

A heavy silence fell.

Na'oum was not there to witness it. Uri closed his eyes as if the bullet had pierced his chest too, while Daniel felt an internal earthquake:

"This... is not just death. This is a lesson. Betrayal is unforgivable."

Yusuf looked at Khalid's body for a moment, then said in a deep, heart-piercing voice:

"He who sold his family... has no place among us."
