Chapter 13 - Closer Than Before

Great Blue Residence

Inside one of the several guest quarters, an elderly lady was currently being checked by the Town's only doctor.

"Doctor Li, how is she?" Master Ru asked.

Doctor Li furrowed his brows a little as he gave his assessment, "Her body seems to be in good health. I can only gauge from her appearance that she has been through a lot and is mentally exhausted. If I'm right, then she should wake up by tomorrow."

"Thank you, Doctor Li," Master Ru bowed towards the doctor and escorted him out of the room.

"I'm glad she isn't hurt," Feng Yu, who was standing at the side with Yi Chen, mentioned with relief apparent in her voice.

"True…" Yi Chen nodded while trying hard to control his smile, "…Hopefully, she'll wake up soon as well,"

The doctor's assessment has confirmed his earlier conjectures. Now, all of his being wanted to win the favour of this old lady so that she could bless him with some divine skills or heavenly treasure!

'Maybe I might even have some divine meridians or something, and she'll take me in as a disciple,' Yi Chen thought to himself as he longingly stared towards the old lady.

'He's such a compassionate man,' Noticing this longing gaze, Feng Yu thought, which in turn further elevated Yi Chen's image in her mind.

Soon, Master Ru returned to the room and said, "I've reported the matter to Captain Hao. We'll most probably hear some news by tomorrow."

"Thank you, father," Feng Yu thanked her father. She felt a little guilty for making him busy when he was already busy with office work and handling her engagement.

Understanding her feelings, Master Ru just snorted and said, "This all comes under my purview as the Town head, so you need not feel bothered…"

Master Ru paused a little, suddenly noticing that Feng Yu was standing comparatively closer to Yi Chen than before and teased, "On the other hand, it seems that the two of you have bonded quite well thanks to that outing."

A hint of embarrassment immediately appeared on Feng Yu's face, which made Master Ru laugh with joy.

"Haha! That's how it should be between couples." Master Ru patted Yi Chen's back, "Let's have our dinner now, shall we?"

Yi Chen could only smile uncomfortably at the situation while thinking, 'We just talked a little, old man…what do you mean by bonded?'

Later, when they were having their meal, Master Ru notified the two of them.

"Tomorrow, tailors and jewellers will be arriving, so you two are going to be quite busy. Get your robes measured and suggest to them the necessary changes.

Not to forget the engagement ring selection. It's best that the two of you take your time with it and choose the one which you both like."

"Yes, father," Feng Yu responded with anticipation. Yi Chen, who was sitting beside her, also nodded in affirmation.

Seeing that Yi Chen was still a bit reserved, Master Ru suggested, "Xiao Chen, the garden looks perfect for a stroll tonight. Why don't you take some time after dinner and explore it with Yu'er?"

"This…" Yi Chen hesitated a little. However, feeling Feng Yu's gaze directed at him from the side, he decided to bite the bullet, "…I would love to do that,"

"Haha! That's good. Let's finish our dinner then," Master Ru chuckled while thinking to himself, 'I'm really a great father-in-law, aren't I?'

'Old man, why are you like this? Aren't fathers-in-law supposed to hate their future sons-in-law? I won't have any reason to hate you if you're like this…'

Yi Chen complained in his heart as he looked at the jovial expression on Master Ru's face while he was having his meal.

What Yi Chen, however, was not aware of was the fact that despite his laments about his unjust fate, his subconscious resistance towards the idea of marrying Feng Yu had decreased substantially after spending time with her today.

After finishing their dinner, Yi Chen and Feng Yu went for a stroll in the garden under the expectant eyes of Master Ru.

The garden outside was dimly lit with lamps, and the fragrance of the nearby jasmines pervaded the air. However, to Yi Chen, this soul-nourishing scent only heightened his nervousness, which stemmed from the silence between the two of them.

Unable to withstand the silence any longer, Yi Chen gulped his saliva and tried to start a conversation, "So…the moon's pretty white, isn't it…"

'Of course, it's white, you dumbass…has it ever been of any different colour?' Yi Chen almost smacked his face in frustration when he realised what he had just said.

A delicate chuckle escaped Feng Yu's lips as she nodded, "Yes, the moon's indeed very white today."

Yi Chen sighed in relief and soon asked another question, "So, Yu'er, what are your hobbies?"

"My hobbies, hmm? I don't have a lot, to be honest. I like spending time with nature a lot, and apart from that, I also love painting," she replied in an enthusiastic manner.

Sensing this, Yi Chen knew where to direct the conversation forward and asked, "Painting, huh? I find it very hard,"

"It really is," Yu'er nodded and continued, "However, when you look at the completed picture at the end, all that hard work feels worth it."

"After hearing such profound words, I won't be surprised to find that you're some hidden painting master," Yi Chen joked with a snicker.

"Haha! I wish. If I try my best now, I can only make a portrait of a person." Feng Yu laughed along with Yi Chen.

"A portrait, huh? That's pretty neat. Can you draw my portrait as well? I've never had my portrait drawn by anyone, so I'm really curious how it would look," Yi Chen asked with honest curiosity.

Even on Earth, he never got the opportunity to get one drawn by an artist.

"Sur-"

Before Feng Yu could continue, she heard the hurried steps of someone from behind and turned around.

It was one of the maids tasked with taking care of the old lady.

"Young Miss! The old lady is making a scene!" the maid told her hurriedly.
