The air in the concrete corridor leading away from the main arena was thick with the smell of scorched stone and ozone. Yuzuki walked slowly, his boots clicking softly against the floor. His jacket was slightly frayed at the collar, and the bare blue of his eyes shone with a quiet, lingering exhaustion. The sheer cognitive load of running the infinite calculations required for Red had left a dull throb behind his temples.
He stopped.
Standing in the dim light of the corridor, leaning casually against the damp concrete wall, was Chrollo Lucilfer.
The leader of the Phantom Troupe was dressed in a dark, high-collared trench coat, his hair parted down the middle and his forehead bandage concealing his signature cross tattoo. His hands were tucked deep into his pockets, his dark, bottomless eyes fixed on Yuzuki as the boy approached.
"An exceptional demonstration of spatial manipulation," Chrollo said, his voice quiet, calm, and entirely devoid of malice, yet carrying a heavy, magnetic resonance. "To reverse the vector of a vacuum so effortlessly... you possess a remarkably rare mind, Yuzuki."
Yuzuki paused, his lazy smirk returning to his face, though he kept his hands in his pockets. He could feel the incredibly dense, perfectly controlled aura swirling deep within Chrollo. Like a dormant volcano wrapped in silk.
"Thanks," Yuzuki replied smoothly, offering a casual nod. "It's a lot of math. My head is still ringing. Good luck out there, Chrollo."
Chrollo offered a polite, closed-lip smile as he stepped past Yuzuki, heading toward the bright, roaring exit that led to the ring. "Luck is a variable I prefer to eliminate. But I appreciate the sentiment."
As Chrollo's dark silhouette vanished into the blinding light of the arena, Yuzuki continued down the corridor, turning the corner into the competitor's waiting room.
SMACK!
"Ow!" Yuzuki winced, clutching his forehead as Bisky's fist connected with absolute precision.
"What did I tell you?!" Bisky screamed, her face flushed red as she stomped her foot, her twin tails shaking with pure fury. "You absolute idiot! You made that ten times harder than it needed to be! You told him your exact cooldown! Who does that?!"
"Ah, Bisky, relax," Yuzuki groaned, rubbing the bump forming on his head. "It was a tactical trade-off. Revealing the restriction increases the cognitive pressure on the opponent, making them predictable. Besides, I wanted to test the operational limits of the Red reversion under high-stress conditions."
"Test your limits?!" Bisky hissed, crossing her arms and glare at him with her sharp, maternal eyes. "You almost got yourself turned into a pancake! If your calculation had been off by even a fraction of a millisecond, the kinetic rebound of that Supernova would have liquefied your organs! You are a prodigy, Yuzuki, but if you keep playing with your food, one of these monsters is going to eat you alive."
Yuzuki's lazy smile softened slightly, his bare blue eyes drifting toward the live monitor on the wall, which was already showing the next match's preparations. "Yeah. I know. But where's the fun in a perfect equation if you never test the variables?"
Out in the grand stadium, the chief announcer was already back in the center of the ring, his voice echoing over the roar of eighty thousand fans.
"Ladies and gentlemen! The absolute brilliance of our combatants continues to defy imagination! But we must move forward! Standing in the western corner... The Winter Queen — Rhea Frost! And standing in the eastern corner... The enigmatic Master of the Book — Chrollo Lucilfer!"
The crowd exploded into cheers as Rhea Frost stepped onto the concrete. She was an elegant, striking woman dressed in a sleek, pale-blue combat suit, her long silver hair tied into a high ponytail. Her expression was utterly expressionless. Cold, sharp, and ruthlessly efficient.
From the eastern gate, Chrollo strolled out, his hands still in his pockets, his dark trench coat billowing slightly in the wind.
The two met in the center of the shattered ring, which had been hastily leveled by the arena's heavy maintenance crews. Rhea looked at Chrollo, her eyes narrowing as she felt the complete absence of any leaked aura from his frame. He was executing a perfect Zetsu, looking more like a visiting academic than a lethal combatant.
"I have watched your matches, Chrollo Lucilfer," Rhea said, her voice dropping like icicles. "You are an anomaly. You have no consistent style, no predictable pattern. But my cold is absolute. The longer this match continues, the more your joints will lock, and the slower your thoughts will become."
Chrollo slowly pulled his right hand from his pocket, a thick, beautifully bound book with a handprint on the cover. Skill Hunter materializing in his palm. He flipped it open to a specific page, his dark eyes reflecting the printed script.
"A defensive strategy based on environmental attrition," Chrollo murmured thoughtfully, as if analyzing a rare text. "A beautiful concept, Rhea. But an absolute defense is merely a lock that hasn't met its key. Shall we begin?"
"Match start!" the referee shouted, leaping back.
SHRRRRRR!
Instantly, a wave of dense, freezing aura exploded from Rhea's boots, spreading across the concrete floor like a rapidly growing crystal forest. The temperature in the stadium plummeted by thirty degrees in a single second. The concrete beneath Chrollo's feet turned white with thick hoarfrost, the extreme cold designed to rapidly sap his physical stamina and slow his neurological reflexes.
Chrollo did not retreat. He took a single, measured step backward, his book open in his right hand.
'She uses her Transmutation to mimic the properties of extreme cold, creating a localized cryostasis field,' Chrollo analyzed silently, his mind working with the cold efficiency of a supercomputer. 'The density of the frost is highest near the floor. To bypass it, I must avoid physical contact with the ground.'
"First Page," Chrollo whispered.
POOF!
A pair of intricately designed, heavy iron boots materialized on Chrollo's feet. An acquired Conjuration ability from a forgotten martial artist. The boots were heavily insulated with dense Nen-infused layers specifically designed to resist thermal transfer.
Rhea's eyes narrowed. "An impressive counter. But my cold does not merely travel through the ground."
She snapped her fingers, and several sharp, pressurized lances of solid ice materialized in the air around her, propelled by her sub-category Emission. They shot toward Chrollo like silver arrows.
Chrollo moved with fluid grace. Instead of dodging wildly, he executed precise, minimal sidesteps. The heavy boots did not hamper his speed in the slightest; his mastery of Ryu allowed him to distribute his physical strength perfectly. As the ice lances zipped past his head, he reached out with his left hand, his fingers coated in Ko, and cleanly snapped the tip off one of the lances, analyzing its density and temperature in a fraction of a second.
'The structural integrity of the ice is maintained by her active aura connection,' Chrollo noted. 'If I sever the connection, the physical construct will instantly dissolve.'
Flipping the page of his book, Chrollo smiled. "Let us change the environment."
SHHHHH!
A dense, black shroud of thick, oily smoke began to pour from the pages of Skill Hunter, rapidly filling the center of the ring. It wasn't standard smoke; it was a Conjured fog that completely blocked light, thermal imaging, and even the transmission of basic aura sensing.
Rhea found herself plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
"A childish trick," Rhea cold-heartedly declared.
She immediately expanded her En to its maximum radius, a ten-meter sphere of razor-sharp awareness surrounding her body. The moment Chrollo entered that boundary, she would feel the displacement of the air and freeze him instantly.
But Chrollo did not enter.
From deep within the black fog, the sound of soft, rapid footsteps echoed from multiple directions at once.
'Multiple targets?' Rhea analyzed, her mind remaining perfectly calm. 'An illusion? Or Conjured puppets?'
She did not move. She kept her defensive posture compact, her Cryostasis aura flaring in a dense, protective dome around her. The first figure burst through the fog. A shadowy, human-shaped mass. Rhea thrust her palm forward, a blast of sub-zero air instantly freezing the figure solid, causing it to shatter into a hundred harmless ice crystals.
But it was a decoy.
At the exact microsecond she committed to the strike, a tiny, high-velocity projectile. A simple, Nen-enhanced steel needle shot through the fog from her blind spot, aimed directly at the thin, unprotected skin behind her ear.
Rhea's reflexes were elite. She tilted her head, the needle grazing her cheek, drawing a single droplet of blood.
'He is trying to implant a manipulation device,' Rhea thought, her heart rate finally elevating. 'He wants to control me. I cannot allow him to establish physical contact.'
Determined to end the tactical game, Rhea gathered the entirety of her aura, preparing to unleash her ultimate technique. "Cryostasis: Absolute Zero!"
An immense, blinding wave of blue light erupted from her body, a spherical explosion of freezing energy that designed to freeze everything within a fifty-meter radius solid, bypassing any physical barriers or armor. The black fog was instantly crystallized, falling to the ground like black snow.
But as the air cleared, Rhea's eyes widened in absolute shock.
Chrollo was not in front of her. He was not even on the ring.
He was standing ten meters in the air, floating effortlessly above her, his book open as a pair of dark, leathery wings. Another stolen ability kept him perfectly suspended outside the reach of her ground-based frost.
"Your calculation was correct, Rhea," Chrollo said down to her, his voice carrying a calm, clinical pity. "My physical body would have frozen. But you expended eighty percent of your remaining aura pool on that single, desperate expansion. You left your internal defenses completely empty."
Before Rhea could react, Chrollo closed his book with a soft, decisive snap.
The leathery wings vanished, and Chrollo descended toward her like a falling shadow. As his boots touched the frozen concrete, he moved with a speed she could no longer match, his physical output vastly superior now that she was exhausted.
He appeared directly in her blind spot, his hand gently tapping the back of her neck. He didn't use a lethal strike; he simply delivered a precise, localized burst of aura that disrupted her remaining flow of Nen, causing her system to short-circuit.
Rhea's eyes went wide, the cold aura around her instantly dissolving as her knees buckled. She collapsed onto the frost-covered stone, completely conscious but physically unable to move a single muscle as her nervous system struggled to reset.
Chrollo stood over her, his hands slipping back into his trench coat pockets, his book vanishing into thin air.
"A beautiful ability, Rhea," Chrollo said softly, looking down at her with those dark, bottomless eyes. "But once the pattern is mapped, the outcome is already decided."
The referee rushed forward, checking Rhea's state before raising his hand.
"Winner by technical knockout... Chrollo Lucilfer! He advances to the quarter-finals!"
The crowd let out a massive, appreciative cheer for the masterclass of tactical combat they had just witnessed. In the VIP box, Netero smiled, stroking his white beard.
"A very clean dissection," Netero murmured. "The boy didn't even use ten percent of his book's potential. He simply chose the three most efficient keys to open her lock. Truly... a terrifying mind."
