Chapter 107 - Chapter 105

Chapter CV: The Stalactite Derivation

The next morning arrives like a whisper through the cavern's bones.

No sunrise pierces the depths of the Crypt of Vitae, but the torches along the walls burn with pale gold now instead of red—a quiet mercy after last night's storm. The air hums with energy, sharp and expectant, as though the ancient stones themselves are awake.

Nathaniel Cross opens his eyes to the low growl of the underground wind. His body aches from the night before, muscles sore, magic still simmering faintly beneath his skin. But there's progress in the pain—a sense that the power now bends to his will instead of the other way around.

He sits up slowly, seeing his companions stirring around the campsite. Theo snores softly beside a pile of shattered ice that Edison must have conjured to keep them cool. Kingsley's arm twitches even in sleep—his fingers sparking faint electricity with every twitch. Pauline and Maisie, already awake, share silent smiles as they sharpen their weapons.

A shadow passes across them all.

Dracula steps out from the mist, regal and composed as ever. His cloak doesn't so much move as flow, catching no dust nor shadow, the very picture of ancient authority.

"Rested?" he asks, voice deep enough to vibrate the stone.

Theo groans, pulling himself upright. "Define rested. Because if we're talking physically, I feel like a bus hit me. Twice."

Kingsley chuckles. "You'd survive a third."

Dracula's lips twitch faintly. "Good. Then you are prepared."

The group straightens instantly. Even Theo stops joking. Something in the Count's tone feels heavier today—colder, as if the very crypt listens when he speaks.

"The next trial," Dracula begins, pacing before them, "will test not your endurance, but your unity."

Pauline folds her arms. "Unity?"

Dracula turns his gaze to her. "Yes. Strength without coordination is chaos. Control without purpose is nothing. You have faced bone and rot, and you have prevailed." His crimson eyes glint. "Now, you will face stone."

Nathaniel's pulse quickens. "Stone?"

Dracula stops beside him. "Gargoyles."

The word hangs in the air like a curse.

Maisie's expression darkens. "We've fought one before. In France. That thing nearly crushed us."

Dracula nods. "Yes. I sensed that fight upon your arrival here. You survived because it was one." He lets the word sink in. "But tell me—what happens when the sky itself turns to stone and falls upon you?"

A low rumble answers his question. The walls tremble. Dust drifts from the ceiling like falling ash.

Theo swallows. "Please tell me that was metaphorical."

"It was not," Dracula says simply.

He gestures toward the far end of the crypt, where the ancient runes ignite in violet light. The air ripples. Shapes begin to materialize—massive, winged figures perched upon the archways and columns. Their eyes blaze amber. Their bodies crackle with life, joints grinding like grinding earth.

Nathaniel's breath catches. There are dozens.

"Bloody hell," Kingsley mutters.

Dracula raises a single finger. "You will not hold back. You will use everything you've learned. And when you can stand no more—then the lesson will end."

Theo exhales, eyes glowing faintly. "No pressure."

Dracula's lips curl into the ghost of a smile. "Begin."

The ground shatters as the first gargoyle leaps from its perch, stone wings unfurling with a deafening roar. The air explodes into chaos.

Nathaniel reacts instinctively—his eyes flare with silver light as his form blurs, skin hardening into obsidian scales. He shapeshifts mid-step, claws slashing through the first gargoyle that dives toward him. The creature shatters on impact, but three more replace it instantly, surrounding him with glowing eyes.

"Now!" he calls out.

Theo darts behind him, blades shimmering with refracted light. "Got you covered!" He flicks his wrists and splits into two—a refracted illusion of himself dashing in opposite directions. Both Theos leap at the gargoyles, blinding them with a sudden burst of brilliance. The creatures recoil, wings flaring to shield their faces.

"Kingsley, Edison!" Nathaniel shouts.

"On it!" Kingsley slams his palms together, electricity surging up his arms. Edison mirrors him, but instead of lightning, frost spreads from his fingertips, the ground beneath them freezing solid.

"Thunderstorm," Edison mutters. "You take the spark, I'll take the chill."

They strike together.

The blast lights up the entire crypt—lightning crackling through mist, ice shards forming from the moisture, shrapnel of stone and frost raining down. Several gargoyles crumble into dust.

Pauline and Maisie rush in from the sides. Pauline hurls a spiked orb that splits midair into smaller projectiles, each one finding a target and detonating. Maisie follows with graceful precision, knives spinning in her hands. Each throw is perfect—she moves like a dancer in the storm, cutting wings and limbs with effortless rhythm.

Theo lands beside Nathaniel, panting. "Okay, these things are way faster than zombies!"

Nathaniel snarls, voice distorted by his shifting form. "Then move faster."

He spins, extending both hands, channeling immobilization energy through the floor. Blue sigils bloom outward, freezing ten gargoyles mid-flight. Their roars turn to stone echoes as the spell locks them in place.

Theo's eyes widen. "Nice trick."

"Finish them!" Nathaniel commands.

Theo grins. "Gladly."

He raises his twin blades and brings them down in a blinding cross-slash. The immobilized gargoyles burst apart into glittering shards.

But the ground trembles again. The battle isn't over. Far from it.

Dozens more emerge from the shadows—some larger, carved with intricate runes, others faster, darting across the cavern floor like beasts of shadow. Their wings scrape the air, creating a gale that nearly throws Theo off his feet.

Edison curses. "They're adapting!"

Dracula watches from above, voice carrying through the chamber. "Good. Then so must you."

Nathaniel looks to his team. "Form the circle! Back-to-back!"

They move without hesitation—six figures standing in a glowing ring, surrounded by monsters.

Kingsley and Edison lift their hands toward the ceiling. Lightning meets ice in a single column that spears the sky, splitting into a swirling storm overhead. Hail and thunder crash down, hammering the gargoyles from above.

Pauline kneels, pressing her palms to the ground. "Spiked barrage—now!"

The earth around them bursts upward, jagged stone spikes impaling any gargoyle that dares approach.

Maisie leaps from spike to spike, throwing her knives in rhythmic arcs that carve glowing trails through the air. Each blade detonates with pinpoint accuracy. "Left side clear!"

Theo raises his arms, gathering light into a shimmering sphere that pulses like a second sun. "Refracting field—amplify!"

The light refracts off the ice shards from Edison's storm, scattering beams across the crypt in brilliant flashes. The gargoyles scream, blinded and disoriented.

Nathaniel sees the moment and strikes.

He shifts again, this time into his vampire form—pale skin, glowing eyes, wings unfurling from his back like shadows stitched with fire. "Hold the line!"

He soars upward, meeting the largest gargoyle head-on. The creature's claws clash with his in midair, stone against blood. They spiral in a deadly dance above the crypt.

Nathaniel growls, feeling the strength in the monster's body. It's ancient, older than the castle itself—each strike shakes the air. The gargoyle roars, jaw unhinging as it tries to bite through him.

But Nathaniel's voice cuts through the chaos.

"Immobilize!"

The gargoyle freezes, its stone wings stiff in midair. Nathaniel drives his claws into its chest and tears the core free—a glowing orb of crimson energy. The creature collapses into dust, raining over the others like falling embers.

He lands heavily, panting, wings folding behind him.

Theo rushes forward, wide-eyed. "Okay, that was officially badass."

Nathaniel manages a faint smirk. "Progress."

Edison laughs, throwing another wave of ice toward the advancing horde. "At this rate, we're gonna run out of crypt!"

Dracula's voice echoes, almost amused. "Do not worry. The crypt will rebuild itself."

Pauline hurls another orb, smashing two gargoyles apart. "Yeah, that's super comforting, Count!"

Maisie slides beside her, blades dripping molten stone. "Focus! Three left!"

Nathaniel turns, eyes flaring. He channels everything—fire, shadow, light—into his palms. The air vibrates around him as the power surges to the surface. "Now!"

The others respond instinctively. Theo unleashes a beam of light; Kingsley and Edison strike with thunder and frost; Pauline's orbs ignite midair; Maisie's knives spin through the blast.

The combined force hits the last gargoyles at once.

The explosion shakes the cavern to its roots.

Dust falls from the ceiling. The walls pulse with fading runes. Silence follows—thick, absolute.

Then, slowly, the torches reignite. Dracula descends from his perch, his boots silent on the cracked stone. His crimson eyes sweep over them all—the exhaustion, the bruises, the burning determination still alive in every face.

"Well done," he says at last. "One hundred and three gargoyles."

Theo tilts his head. "Wait, we overkilled?"

"Exceeding expectations is... acceptable," Dracula admits, the faintest hint of satisfaction in his voice.

Kingsley wipes his brow. "You mean we finally hit a hundred?"

Dracula looks at him, expression unreadable. "One hundred and one."

Theo blinks. "What? But you just said—"

Dracula smirks. "You slipped again."

Kingsley groans. "No way—where?!"

Edison claps his shoulder, laughing. "Doesn't matter, bro. We did it."

Nathaniel straightens, still catching his breath. "They worked together. No panic. No hesitation."

Dracula nods slowly. "And you, Cross—you led without command. You trusted them. That is progress."

The others glance at Nathaniel, surprised but proud. Even Theo grins. "Told you you'd make a good commander."

Pauline stretches, bones cracking. "So, what's next? Lava demons? Dragons?"

Dracula's eyes gleam faintly. "In time. For now... rest."

Maisie sits down heavily, knives clattering beside her. "Rest sounds perfect."

As they settle again among the ruins, the storm of the fight fading into memory, Nathaniel gazes at his companions—these people who had once been strangers but now fought like a single heartbeat. For the first time, he feels it fully.

Not just strength. Not just power.

Unity.

Dracula turns to leave, cloak whispering across the floor. "When the next hour comes, the crypt will test you once more. And what you face next..." He pauses, glancing over his shoulder. "...will not be stone, nor bone, nor flesh—but something that watches from the dark."

The torches flicker. A chill crawls through the cavern.

Nathaniel looks up at the ceiling, at the faint carvings of ancient angels and demons intertwined, and feels a strange anticipation rise in his chest.

Something else is coming.

Something that will test more than their strength.

And somewhere deep in the darkness, the crypt itself seems to whisper—

"Let's see if they are ready."
