Chapter 108 - Chapter 106

Chapter CVI: The Surprise Quiz

The crypt hums like a living thing the next morning.

A low pulse ripples through the stone walls, and every torch burns brighter than before — almost white now, not gold. The group stirs beneath the faint glow, each of them half-awake, their bodies still marked with bruises from the battle with the gargoyles.

Nathaniel Cross sits apart from them, back against a pillar carved with ancient sigils. His eyes flicker faint silver as he stares at the faint reflection of himself in the polished stone — the faint outline of fangs still visible when he breathes. His hair is disheveled, his gloves scuffed, but he feels alive. His body aches, but his mind hums with something new: control.

Theo is the first to break the silence. "Anyone else feel like they've been hit by a freight train made of concrete and guilt?"

Edison groans from the floor. "At least your hair's still intact. Mine feels like a frozen bird's nest."

Pauline rolls her eyes, throwing a small rock at him. "You both sound like children. We won."

Maisie chuckles softly. "Barely."

The air shifts again — colder, darker. Then, with no sound at all, a familiar presence materializes from the mist.

Dracula.

But this time, instead of his dark robes and formal posture, he carries something... unexpected — a tray. Six porcelain cups sit upon it, steam curling in elegant wisps.

Theo blinks. "...You've got to be kidding me."

Dracula sets the tray on a stone altar. "You've earned coffee."

"Wait— Dracula makes coffee?" Kingsley blurts out.

"Count Dracula," the vampire corrects, eyes glinting faintly, "and yes. This blend is not ordinary. It is crafted from Transylvanian soil-grown beans, infused with vitae dust — a stimulant of both blood and mind."

Theo smirks. "So basically, vampire Red Bull."

Dracula's stare could freeze mountains. "If that helps you understand it."

They gather around him, still groggy but intrigued. The smell of roasted beans and something faintly metallic fills the air. Nathaniel takes his cup first. The warmth seeps through his gloves — and when he takes a sip, a shock of clarity floods through him.

He gasps softly. "What... what is this?"

"Awakening," Dracula says simply. "You will need it."

Theo takes a sip and nearly yells. "Okay, that's not coffee, that's adrenaline juice!"

Edison laughs, steam rising from his cup. "I think I just felt my soul do a push-up."

Pauline hides her grin. "You're all hopeless."

But even she drinks — and even she can't hide the spark in her eyes afterward.

Dracula folds his hands behind his back. "Today, you do not train with weights or walls. Today, you train with blood and wit."

Maisie raises an eyebrow. "Wit?"

"Yes," Dracula says, "and instinct. Life rarely warns you when death comes knocking."

Nathaniel exchanges a glance with Theo. Something in the Count's tone feels... off. Calculated.

But before he can question it, the ground trembles beneath them.

A deep rumble echoes through the Crypt of Vitae — the torches flicker, the air turns sharp and humming.

Dracula doesn't move. He simply says: "You have five seconds."

"To do what?!" Kingsley shouts.

"To survive."

The stone floor splits open.

From the cracks, figures erupt — shadows clad in black, moving like smoke. Their eyes gleam the same crimson as Dracula's. The instructors. But they're different now — faster, more ruthless, like predators let off a leash.

Edison stumbles back, ice forming instinctively in his palms. "This isn't training—"

"It is," Dracula calls calmly from the side, "the Emergency Surprise Quiz."

Theo sputters. "The what?!"

Dracula's voice cuts through the chaos: "Objective: survive. If you die — you fail."

Nathaniel barely has time to react before one of the instructors lunges at him. A blur of claws and shadow. He ducks, kicks off the wall, and shapeshifts midair — his hands turn to obsidian claws as he counters the strike. Sparks fly.

Kingsley and Edison react together — lightning and frost swirling like a cyclone. The air roars as thunder cracks against ice, freezing three of the instructors in an instant.

Pauline rolls to the side, throws a spiked orb that detonates in midair — blinding light and shards scatter the enemy lines. Maisie follows, twirling knives that spin like silver comets, cutting through the illusions.

Theo splits into two again — refraction trick shimmering across the cavern. His double sprints left, drawing the attention of two instructors while the real Theo leaps behind them, blade flashing.

"They're using immobilization spells!" he calls.

Nathaniel's eyes flare white. "Then we counter with movement!"

He slams his hands into the ground, blue sigils spiraling outward — immobilizing half their attackers in place. The others still rush them, flickering like ghosts.

Dracula watches, unmoving, his expression unreadable.

Edison breathes heavily, hands trembling as frost forms on his shoulders. "There's too many!"

Nathaniel's voice cuts through the chaos. "No—just enough."

He leaps into the fray again, claws meeting steel, and snarls. "Kingsley, shock the floor! Now!"

Kingsley grits his teeth, channels his energy, and punches downward. Lightning races through the stone, electrocuting the immobilized instructors in a brilliant surge. They collapse, smoking.

Pauline cheers, "Nice!"

But then, the air shifts.

A figure appears from above — the lead instructor, descending like a hawk. His hand glows blood-red. "Enough play."

He slams his palm down, and the floor explodes in a ripple of energy. Everyone is thrown back — Theo crashes into a pillar, Maisie rolls to break her fall, Nathaniel skids across the ground with a snarl.

Dracula watches silently. Not interfering. Not helping.

Nathaniel rises slowly, dust clinging to his hair. His eyes narrow.

This isn't a test anymore — it's war.

"Theo," he calls, voice calm but sharp, "mirror beam."

Theo groans, wiping blood from his lip. "Already ahead of you."

Light bursts from his palms — refracted, splintered, scattering in all directions. The instructors raise shields, blinded by the brilliance.

Nathaniel charges through the glare, wings unfurling from his back — black and veined with red. He smashes into one opponent, grabs another by the collar, and slams him into the wall. The cavern shakes.

Maisie leaps over him, flipping midair, hurling knives in every direction. They form a spiral of silver around Nathaniel, striking enemies like orbiting blades.

Kingsley and Edison stand together again, arms crossed. "Let's crank it up," Kingsley mutters.

"Storm sync?" Edison grins.

"Storm sync."

They raise their hands simultaneously. Lightning merges with frost again — thunder wrapped in ice. The blast hits the ceiling, exploding into a shimmering rain of electric shards. The air turns blue, humming with energy.

Theo's refracted light hits the shards — bending, amplifying, turning the cavern into a hall of mirrors. Every motion now doubles, every illusion reflects.

The instructors freeze, disoriented.

Nathaniel seizes the chance.

"Team huddle!" he shouts.

They pull together, weapons drawn, breathing hard. Steam and sparks rise around them.

Maisie points to the ceiling. "The runes — the light's reflecting off the carvings! That's why they're confused."

Nathaniel nods. "Good catch. Use it."

Pauline grins. "You mean—blast them with their own confusion?"

"Exactly."

Theo smirks. "That's evil. I like it."

They move in unison — each striking their mark. Theo's light bends, Edison's frost traps, Kingsley's lightning cracks the floor. Pauline's orbs and Maisie's blades detonate like fireworks.

Nathaniel channels all remaining energy into his core — wings unfurl wide, claws glowing crimson.

"Break!"

He dives through the smoke, straight through the center, releasing a pulse of immobilization so strong it ripples through the cavern. Every remaining instructor freezes — even the lead.

Silence.

Then, the immobilized figures dissolve into ash.

Dracula claps once.

The sound echoes like thunder.

"Impressive."

Theo throws his arms up. "What the hell, Count?! You tried to kill us!"

Dracula tilts his head. "If death frightens you, you have already failed."

Edison pants. "You could've warned us!"

"That," Dracula says, "defeats the purpose."

Nathaniel stands in the center, wings fading, eyes dulling back to human. "The Emergency Surprise Quiz... was a combat drill."

Dracula's lips twitch into a faint smile. "And you passed."

Pauline glares. "Barely!"

"You adapted," Dracula says. "That is all that matters."

Maisie wipes sweat from her brow. "We could've died!"

"You did not," Dracula says simply. "Therefore, you live stronger."

Theo throws his hands up. "I'm gonna need another cup of that vampire coffee."

Dracula smirks, actually amused this time. "You may have as much as you wish."

The tension fades — slowly — replaced by reluctant laughter. Edison collapses beside Kingsley. Pauline pats Maisie's shoulder. Nathaniel leans against a cracked pillar, exhaustion setting in, but satisfaction too. They won.

Dracula looks at them one last time before turning away. "Rest. The second quarter begins soon. You will need more than muscle to survive it."

Theo groans. "Please tell me it's not another surprise test."

"No," Dracula replies, walking toward the mist, "the next will not attack you from the front."

And then he vanishes.

They sit there for a long while, breathing, surrounded by dust and silence — until Maisie finally breaks it.

"So... anyone else miss Luna's Cup Café?"

Everyone looks up.

Theo grins tiredly. "God, yes. Remember the latte art?"

Edison snorts. "Remember the croissants."

Pauline laughs. "Remember the time Nathaniel asked for 'blood with foam' and the barista actually—"

"—don't," Nathaniel mutters, hiding a small smile. "It was one time."

The laughter grows. The tension fades.

They talk about memes, anime, and home — the human things that make the war bearable. For a moment, the crypt feels less like a tomb, and more like a dorm room of weird, extraordinary friends.

Kingsley stretches. "If Dracula ever opens a café, I'm applying."

Theo nods. "He'd call it Bite & Brew."

Edison laughs so hard he nearly chokes. "Oh, that's good."

Nathaniel shakes his head, smiling faintly, eyes drifting toward the misted tunnel ahead.

Something stirs there — faint, distant, but real. He doesn't know what waits in the next trial, but one thing's certain.

They're ready.

The torches dim again, the echoes of laughter fading into the heartbeat of the crypt.

Somewhere, deep beneath the ancient stone, the Crypt of Vitae breathes once more — and the shadows listen.
