Chapter 19 - AMONG THE BILLIONS OF STARS IN THE UNIVERSE, YOU REMAIN ONLY THE MOON I SEE.

The world seemed to have suspended its chaos for a few hours on this particular Sunday. It was mid-day, and the atmosphere was thick with a heavy, golden tranquility. High above, the sun reigned supreme, a brilliant orb that didn't just shine—it poured itself over the earth like molten gold, relentless and warm. A soft, drifting wind carried the scent of sun-baked stone and the distant, sweet perfume of blooming jasmine, weaving through the streets like a quiet melody.

Daiki moved along the walking road, his pace slow and rhythmic. He wore a simple blue T-shirt that seemed to soak up the radiance of the sky, paired with white track pants that flared brightly under the direct glare of the sun. As he walked, the light sculpted the world around him, creating sharp, dark silhouettes of the trees and buildings. His own shadow stretched out behind him, a long, dark mirror following his every step across the pavement.

Though his body was moving, Daiki was internally adrift. His mind was a whirlpool of memory, specifically circling back to the day he had spent at the amusement park with his friends. It had been a day of noise, laughter, and adrenaline, yet one tiny fragment of time—a scene that had lasted only a fraction of a second—was now clinging to his consciousness like a burr. It refused to leave, playing on a loop that grew more vivid with every repetition.

He couldn't stop thinking about the girl he had seen there.

She was etched into his mind with a clarity that frightened him. He remembered her eyes—vast, expressive pools framed by impossibly long, dark eyelashes that cast tiny shadows on her cheeks. Her skin had the translucent quality of fine porcelain, looking so smooth and delicate that Daiki felt as though even the lightest, most feather-soft touch would cause her skin to flush a deep, plump red.

I never thought a single person could stay in my head this long, Daiki mused, his brow furrowing as he stared at the ground. He had seen many girls since he was a child, but none possessed this kind of gravity. She held an untold charm, a quiet, magnetic energy that felt as though it could attract anyone without even trying. Even though he had only seen her for a fleeting moment, her image was printed onto his heart.

A wave of melancholy washed over him, causing his shoulders to sag. With beauty like that, she definitely has a boyfriend, he thought, a bitter pang of jealousy and defeat twisting in his gut. Someone like her wouldn't be alone. He felt a desperate, hollow longing. If I only had one more chance. I want to see her again. I want to be the one to approach her, to talk to her, to feel close to her. I want to be the man she desires.

He let out a heavy sigh, his expression darkening with the sad realization of wanting something that felt entirely out of reach. "Damn," he whispered to the warm air, "fate is really cruel."

While Daiki walked in the shadow of a memory, Ren was basking in the light of the present. His life felt full, vibrant, and focused on a single person who made everything else seem secondary. Akari was the center of his world, and today, the need to see her was an ache he couldn't ignore.

Ren pulled his phone from his pocket, his fingers hovering over the glass. His heart gave a little thud of anticipation as he typed: "Akari, are you free this evening..?"

Across the city, in the quiet of her room, Akari's phone buzzed. When she saw Ren's name on the lock screen, her breath hitched. Her heart began to race, a frantic drumming against her ribs that made her feel lightheaded. A deep, burning blush crept up her neck, staining her cheeks a bright pink.

"Yeah, I'm free," she replied, her thumbs trembling slightly. "Why? What is it?"

Ren was sitting on the edge of his bed, staring at the chat window. The moment her reply popped up, a smile broke across his face. He didn't hesitate. "Nothing, just wanted to see you."

Akari stared at the message, her eyes wide. Just to see me? The simplicity of it made her heart flutter. It wasn't a request for a favor or a plan for a group hangout—he just wanted her presence. "Yeah, it's okay then. Where should we meet up?"

Ren's reply was instantaneous, carrying the weight of their shared history. "The place where we met for the first time."

The phone almost slipped from Akari's hand. Her heart was now truly bursting with shyness. That bench. That cold, snowy night when everything had changed. She felt a surge of heat so intense she had to fan her face with her hand. "Yeah, fine then," she sent back, though her mind was already spiraling into a thousand questions.

Why does he want to see me there? Is it today? Is he finally going to confess his feelings? She bit her lip, her imagination running wild. How am I going to react? If he says he loves me, should I just accept right away? Or will I be too shy to speak? The questions popped up like bubbles in a boiling pot, leaving her in a state of beautiful, anxious chaos.

The previous day, Ren's mind had been occupied by a different kind of mission. His mother had asked him to run an errand for groceries at a nearby store. On his way back, laden with bags, he had passed a small boutique filled with accessories.

He had stopped dead in his tracks. The shop window was a treasure trove of glittering silver, polished gold, and shimmering stones. Earrings, bracelets, and rings danced under the bright store lights, casting tiny rainbows across the display. A sudden, powerful thought took hold of him: I want to buy something beautiful for Akari.

He hurried home, dropped the groceries on the kitchen counter, and headed straight for his room to grab his savings. He didn't count the bills; he just knew he wanted the best he could afford.

When he returned to the store, a female staff member approached him with a professional, yet warm smile. "Welcome! What kind of accessories are you looking for today?"

Ren shifted his weight, feeling slightly out of place among the delicate displays. "Thank you for asking, but I really have no idea about accessories at all. I just wanted to buy a present for a friend of mine."

The staff member leaned in slightly, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Oh my, is it for your girlfriend?"

Ren's face went instantly crimson. He felt the heat radiating from his skin. "No, it's not like that. She isn't my girlfriend, miss. I just... I just wanted to buy a present for her."

Though his words tried to downplay it, his expression—the softness in his eyes and the way his voice dropped when he mentioned her—spoke volumes. The assistant smiled knowingly. "I see. She must be very special. It's my pleasure to help you."

She asked Ren to show her a picture of the girl so she could match the style. Ren pulled out his phone and pulled up a photo of Akari. The staff member gasped softly. "Oh my, she really is beautiful. And so cute! She has such lovely hair. Your 'friend' is a very beautiful lady. How nice of you to buy a gift for someone so stunning."

Ren's face went even redder, a deep scarlet. "Please stop teasing me," he mumbled, his voice trembling slightly with shyness. "Can you just... show me something that would suit her?"

The assistant led him to a velvet-lined display. She suggested earrings, explaining that they had a unique way of framing a woman's face and enhancing her natural beauty. She laid out various styles: simple gold studs, heavy silver hoops, and intricate floral patterns.

Then, Ren saw them.

Tucked away in a corner of the case was a pair of butterfly-shaped earrings. He leaned in, his breath fogging the glass for a second. They weren't just jewelry; they were a capture of a moment in flight. The wings were a shimmering mosaic of lavender crystals that seemed to pulse with a hidden light. Suspended just beneath the wings was a single, teardrop-shaped amethyst, deep and clear. Below that, long, slender silver chains fell in a graceful weeping motion, punctuated by tiny, milk-white pearls that looked like frozen droplets of moonlight.

They were ethereal, fragile, and striking—just like Akari. As the shop light hit the facets of the purple stones, sparking a brilliant, dazzling fire, Ren felt a click in his heart. These are the ones.

The staff member looked at the earrings and then back at Ren, a hint of genuine envy in her eyes. "You have incredible taste. I wish someone would buy me something like this."

The price was steep, nearly emptying his savings, but Ren didn't hesitate for a second. He paid, thanked the assistant for her help, and walked out with the small box tucked safely in his pocket.

The assistant called out after him, "Come by again! I'll help you buy the next present for your girlfriend!"

All that night and through the next morning, Ren's head was filled with a different set of questions. How will she react? Will she like them? What will she say when she sees them?

Evening arrived, painting the sky in deep shades of violet and bruised orange. The air grew crisp, a reminder of the night they had first met. Ren stood by the familiar wooden bench, his hands shoved into his pockets, clutching the small box so hard his knuckles were white.

He saw Akari approaching. She looked radiant, even in the fading light. They exchanged quiet "hi's" and waves, but the air between them was thick with unspoken words.

Akari's heart was racing like a horse, a frantic thumping she was sure he could hear. Her cheeks were already flushed a bright pinkish-red. The silence stretched out, heavy and expectant. Finally, she couldn't take it anymore.

"Ren," she said, her voice small, "why did you want to see me this evening? And why here, at this place?"

Ren felt a surge of hesitation. He looked at her, seeing the way her eyes searched his, and felt a wave of nervousness so intense his knees felt weak. Why am I so nervous? I've been with her a thousand times, but this feels different.

He took a deep breath, trying to steady his lungs. He remembered that first night—how he had been broken, drowning in the pain of Hina's betrayal. And then, this kind-hearted angel had appeared and pulled him back from the edge. They had been strangers then, two people lost in the snow. But now, they were standing here with hearts full of a joy that neither could fully contain.

"Akari, sit down for a moment," Ren said, his voice low and gentle. "And close your eyes. Use your hands, and no matter what, don't open them until I say."

Akari obeyed, her curiosity piqued and her heart hammering. She sat on the bench and pressed her palms over her eyes. The world went dark, leaving her senses heightened—the cool breeze on her skin, the distant sound of a car, and the soft shuffle of Ren moving behind her.

Ren stepped around the bench, leaning over her slightly. As he did, the wind caught her hair, swirling the sweet, familiar fragrance of her shampoo toward him. It was a scent that always made him feel grounded. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the wrapped box, holding it directly in front of her.

This is it, he thought. The golden chance. I have to tell her. But what if she rejects me? I've faced that pain once before... could I survive it again? He shook the thought away. He looked at Akari—her red cheeks, her trembling hands—and knew he couldn't stay silent.

Akari, meanwhile, was losing her mind. What is he doing? It's been so long. Is he still there? The anxiety and curiosity became too much to bear. Without waiting for his word, she parted her fingers and opened her eyes.

Right in front of her face was a small, beautifully wrapped box.

She gasped and turned her head back to find Ren standing right there, caught in the act. He gave a small, shy smile and handed the gift to her. "This is for you."

"Can I open it?" she asked, her voice a mere whisper.

"Yes, go ahead."

She saw the tag: To Akari. Her fingers fumbled with the wrapping, her heart pounding against her ribs. When she finally pried the lid open, the twilight caught the lavender crystals of the butterfly earrings. They shimmered with a soft, magical light.

Tears welled up in Akari's eyes instantly. She didn't say a word. She lunged forward and hugged Ren so tightly that it felt as though even the air couldn't pass between them.

Ren felt the sudden warmth of her body against his, the softness of her hair, and the frantic beat of her heart. A wave of pure, unadulterated happiness crashed over him. He didn't need her to say she liked them—the way she was clinging to him was the only answer he required. He felt his own heart speed up to match hers, and he wrapped his arms around her just as tightly.

"Thank you very much, Ren," she sobbed into his chest. "Thank you... thank you so much for these beautiful earrings."

She pulled back just an inch, her eyes searching his. In that moment, Hina, the past, and the rest of the world vanished. There was only Ren. "You are the one who made my life easier," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "You are the one who made me smile all the time. You made my presence meaningful. You are the one I've loved with my heart all this time."

She let it all out—every feeling she had been bottling up. "Every time you stayed beside me, I had no way to escape the care and love you showed me. No one has ever made me feel like this."

Ren was speechless. He hadn't expected the confession to come from her first. He felt a surge of protective love so strong it brought tears to his own eyes. He reached down and lifted her up, holding her against him as she rested her hands on his shoulders.

They looked at each other, eyes locked, neither blinking. A tear fell from Akari's eye and landed on Ren's forehead. To him, it felt divine—warm and full of a truth that words couldn't reach.

Ren's own tears began to fall. "Akari," he said, his voice cracking. "I may not love you perfectly, but I can love you endlessly. I want to be the one you lay all your hardships and burdens on. You are the moon that shines through my darkest nights. You are the light that saved me from falling into the darkness."

He looked at her with his whole heart in his eyes. "These aren't just words. I could never say this to anyone else. Only to you."

The words melted the last of Akari's defenses. She clung to him, her voice trembling. "Just stay beside me. In whatever situation I'm in, don't leave me. Just hold my hands until my last breath. That's all I need. I don't need dazzling accessories or gifts, Ren. You are the only thing I desire. Just don't leave my side."

Ren hugged her again, a gentle, fierce embrace. He leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to her forehead. "Don't think about anything else. Just believe in my love for you."

They stayed like that for a long time, two silhouettes against the deepening purple of the sky, hearts pounding in unison. The world around them was silent, as if giving them this moment of perfect peace.

Finally, Ren reached into the box. "Let me put them on for you?"

Akari smiled, a radiant, teary-eyed expression. She sat still as Ren's hands—usually so steady, now slightly shaking—guided the earrings into place. The lavender butterflies looked perfect against her skin, matching the delicate beauty of her face.

The earrings were like a quiet whisper of romance. As Akari moved her head, the silver chains swayed softly, catching the last of the light like tiny, shimmering moments of attention. The butterfly design suggested a fragile beauty, a transformation.

It felt as though she wasn't trying to impress anyone, yet in that moment, she was impossible to ignore. She looked like a dreamer waiting for a dance under the stars—a girl who didn't scream for attention, but shimmered for it, inviting Ren to lean in closer and see the beautiful soul he had found.
