Sallie's POV
Denzel's words came across like he was defending me, tinged with what sounded like sympathy.
But something about his tone made my skin crawl. I narrowed my eyes at him, studying his face for a long moment before turning away with deliberate coldness.
I faced Lucia. "We're going to the hospital." Then I glanced at Todd. "Handle the rest."
Todd gave a slight nod. That easy smile stayed put, but his gaze warmed. "Don't worry about it, Sallie. I've got this covered."
I didn't bother responding. I walked out with Lucia, never once looking back at Denzel—not even a hint of thanks for his so-called help.
I wasn't an idiot. Todd cared about me enough that he'd have rushed over the second that bug picked up trouble, regardless of any plan.
I could see it clearly—if Denzel hadn't been involved, Lucia and I never would've ended up in this mess. Todd would've been the one to rescue me.
