The bedroom was quiet, the heavy velvet curtains drawn against the world beyond them. A fire burned in the hearth, casting a warm amber glow across the room, but neither of them seemed to notice the cold that lingered in the silence.
Mathias sat beside Olivia on the edge of their bed, carefully wrapping fresh bandages around her injured hands. He worked slowly, mindful of every bruise and torn patch of skin. Olivia had barely protested when the physician treated her wounds, but Mathias had noticed the way her fingers trembled whenever anyone touched them.
