Chapter 362 - Chapter 362: The Iron Fist

Smith leaned forward, his voice carrying the same question he'd posed to every candidate. "Tell us about your views on superheroes, your philosophy, and your plans if you join this team."

Shang-Chi had prepared extensively for this moment. He'd studied the previous candidates' answers, received coaching from his father, and rehearsed his response until it flowed naturally. Now he delivered it with conviction.

"This world isn't perfect. Justice and evil will always emerge in human society for various reasons." His tone carried measured thoughtfulness, the cadence of someone who'd genuinely reflected on these questions.

"Law enforcement and emergency services can't provide immediate relief everywhere. Criminals don't conveniently travel to police stations to commit their crimes—they strike where authorities can't immediately respond. That's where superheroes become necessary, stopping crimes in real-time before they escalate."

He gestured toward the judges, acknowledging their experience. "I strongly agree with the principle that justice must sometimes be achieved through direct action, even if it requires paying a price or accepting moral complexity."

Shang-Chi's voice grew more confident as he continued. "The evidence supports superhero effectiveness. Crime rates in New York and surrounding cities have dropped significantly over the past few years. The presence of enhanced individuals actively combating criminal activity has created tangible deterrent effects."

He paused, organizing his next point. "Fighting crime is a long-term endeavor. History shows us that even in environments dominated by criminals, justice eventually emerges as the dominant force. Order arises from chaos when good people refuse to accept lawlessness."

The philosophical framework carried echoes of Fraternity doctrine—justice through direct action, acceptance of moral weight, focus on results over procedural purity. Tony and Ivan recognized the influence immediately. Wenwu's guidance was evident in every carefully chosen phrase.

"So I believe superheroes don't just curb criminal activity," Shang-Chi concluded. "They guide people toward goodness through example. They demonstrate that courage and principle can triumph over evil."

He straightened, his final statement carrying genuine passion. "If I'm fortunate enough to join this superhero team, I'll devote myself completely to fighting crime and protecting innocents. I want beauty and kindness to remain in people's hearts and minds, free from the threat of evil."

"I'm joining because I hope to better help those in need through collective action. My personal strength has limits—a team can accomplish far more."

His expression grew more solemn. "Even if I'm not selected today, I'll dedicate my life to this work. Helping people in need isn't contingent on team membership—it's a calling I'll pursue regardless."

The audience responded with sustained, genuine applause. Shang-Chi had struck the right balance—idealistic without being naive, practical without being cynical, passionate without being performative.

Smith noted that Shang-Chi hadn't needed to be asked about killing. His earlier statements had already answered that question—he understood that protection sometimes required lethal force, that hesitation could cost innocent lives. Not everyone shared Daredevil's rigid principles, thank goodness.

Tony looked between Smith and Ivan, then spoke into his microphone. "I think we should modify our evaluation process. The next contestant's performance might also be excellent. Why don't we wait until both candidates have presented before choosing between them?"

He'd been thinking about this since the Daredevil elimination. The current format created a potential problem: what if the first candidate was excellent and approved, but the second candidate was even better? Making sequential decisions meant potentially missing superior options.

"Fortunately, Daredevil's performance in the first pairing was clearly inadequate, so his elimination didn't create complications," Tony continued. "But moving forward, I think fairness requires we evaluate both candidates before deciding."

Smith and Ivan exchanged glances, then nodded agreement. The logic was sound.

Smith addressed Shang-Chi directly. "Your performance was excellent. However, we've decided to evaluate both candidates in this pairing before making our decision. Please don't interpret the delay as negative assessment."

Shang-Chi bowed slightly, his expression composed. "Thank you, judges. I understand completely."

In the audience section, Xialing's face scrunched with frustration. She leaned toward her father, voice low but carrying obvious irritation. "Tony's just being difficult. If it weren't for him, my brother would have advanced directly."

Her eyes narrowed with suspicion. "Do you think he's deliberately taking revenge on you for defeating him in the tournament?"

Wenwu turned to look at his daughter, his expression patient but firm. "Xialing, don't you think Tony Stark's proposal is actually fairer?"

His tone carried the weight of teaching moment rather than rebuke. "Sequential decisions could disadvantage the second candidate in any pairing. This modification ensures both competitors receive equal consideration."

Ying Li nodded agreement beside him. Neither parent showed anxiety about the delayed decision. They trusted Shang-Chi's performance had met the judges' standards, and arguing with established authority would accomplish nothing productive. Patience was the only reasonable response.

The venue's audience and television viewers absorbed the procedural change with mild surprise, then acceptance. Tony's reasoning was sound—evaluating both candidates before deciding was demonstrably fairer. Nobody wanted arbitrary disadvantages based on presentation order.

And nobody felt sympathy for Matt Murdock's earlier elimination. His philosophy had been fundamentally incompatible with practical superhero work, especially when evaluated through victims' perspectives rather than abstract moral frameworks.

The World Martial Arts Tournament Announcer bounded back to center stage, his enthusiasm undiminished by hours of continuous hosting. "Iron Man has made an excellent suggestion! This rule modification will be applied to all future pairings!"

He swept his arm toward the entrance dramatically. "Now, please welcome our second candidate—Iron Fist, Danny Rand!"

Danny emerged wearing an expensive tailored suit rather than martial arts attire—a deliberate choice that emphasized his dual identity as both superhero and corporate executive. His blond hair was neatly styled, his posture carrying the confidence of someone comfortable with wealth and power.

The display screen illuminated with his profile information:

Danny Rand Position: Chairman, Rand Corporation Background: Orphaned young, trained in Kunlun Title: 66th Iron Fist Power Level: 66 Note: Iron Fist technique can concentrate energy, unleashing power far exceeding baseline measurement

Surprise rippled through the audience. They'd just watched an Asian candidate from an ancient Eastern tradition, and now here was a white American claiming heritage from another legendary Eastern location. The juxtaposition sparked immediate curiosity.

Kung Fu and martial traditions from that region were famously exclusive, rarely shared with outsiders. That they'd trained a white American to the point of granting him the Iron Fist legacy was genuinely surprising. It suggested either exceptional circumstance or extraordinary merit—possibly both.

The Announcer seized on the corporate angle with theatrical amusement. "As expected, the superhero profession attracts considerable wealth! Our three judges are all prosperous, and now we have the chairman of the Rand Corporation joining the competition!"

He paused for comedic timing. "I believe everyone is curious why the chairman of a major corporation would seek to join a superhero team!"

The Announcer gestured toward Danny with flourish. "The stage is yours, Iron Fist Danny Rand!"
