The audience applauded warmly, but a realization was spreading through the crowd like wildfire. Enhanced abilities weren't necessarily innate—they could be acquired through training. Danny Rand's introduction had explicitly stated he'd learned his powers in Kunlun through martial arts study.
Within minutes, people throughout the venue and watching broadcasts worldwide were mentally planning trips to Kunlun to learn these techniques. If a white American could gain such abilities, perhaps anyone with sufficient dedication could achieve similar results.
Agent Coulson's expression grew more serious as he absorbed the implications. Kunlun existed in a territory technically within what governments considered Eastern jurisdiction, but it operated outside S.H.I.E.L.D.'s oversight. The organization had minimal intelligence on the location.
But if Kunlun could train enhanced individuals through systematic training... that changed strategic calculations considerably. Coulson made a mental note to arrange a conversation with Danny Rand after the selection concluded.
Wenwu remembered his own visit to Kunlun, seeking Shou Lao's help resurrecting Ying Li. He recalled the requirements for becoming Iron Fist—candidates had to defeat the dragon Shou Lao in combat to inherit the title.
Sixty-six points of combat power? Wenwu felt skepticism curl through his thoughts. How had someone that weak managed to defeat Shou Lao without being killed by a single tail swipe?
Danny stood on stage, noticing the audience's shifting expressions. He hadn't voluntarily revealed his Kunlun training to the organizers—his application video had only mentioned "Iron Fist" as his hero identity without elaborating on origins.
But the Red Ribbon Corporation's research had been thorough. They'd investigated everything, even making public his childhood apprenticeship in Kunlun. Danny felt helpless about the exposure but had no practical recourse. The information was already disseminated.
He pushed aside his concerns about privacy and gestured toward the stage crew. Staff members wheeled out a large stone sculpture Danny had prepared as a demonstration prop—a decorative rockery carved from solid granite, dense and heavy enough that destroying it without explosives or power tools would challenge even strong baseline humans.
Danny assumed his stance, concentrating energy into his fists. Golden light began manifesting around his hands, visible even in the venue's bright stage lighting. The Iron Fist technique channeling chi into physical form.
He struck the rockery with explosive force.
The stone structure detonated instantly, fragments launching in all directions. But Danny didn't stop—his fists became blurs of motion, striking each piece of debris mid-flight and pulverizing them into powder before they could reach the audience safety barriers.
Within seconds, nothing remained of the solid granite sculpture except fine dust settling onto the stage floor.
The audience erupted in amazed exclamations. "Is that Kung Fu?" someone shouted, voice thick with disbelief and wonder.
The yearning for Kunlun training intensified throughout the crowd. If this was achievable through study and practice, countless people wanted access to that knowledge.
Backstage, Shang-Chi watched Danny's performance with genuine surprise. Kunlun's abilities were more impressive than he'd anticipated. That invisible energy projection and the precision control required to pulverize flying debris—those weren't simple techniques.
In the audience section, Wenwu remained unimpressed. His knowledge of Shou Lao, Kunlun's traditions, and previous Iron Fist holders provided context the general audience lacked. Danny's performance was competent but hardly exceptional by the standards of true masters.
Still, applause rolled through the venue like thunder. What Wenwu considered adequate, the audience perceived as spectacular. The invisible energy shattering stone and reducing it to powder appeared almost magical to people unfamiliar with chi manipulation.
Wenwu leaned toward his wife, keeping his voice low beneath the applause. "Ying Li, there's actually a dragon in Kunlun called Shou Lao."
Ying Li's eyes widened with surprise. "There are multiple dragons?"
"They're still very rare," Wenwu clarified. "But yes, they exist in different locations with different purposes."
Ying Li filed this information away for future consideration. The venue wasn't appropriate for detailed discussion about dragon mythology and the Great Protector's potential connections to other divine beings.
Xialing, listening to their quiet conversation, mentally catalogued the information. Shenron, the Great Protector, and now Shou Lao—that made at least three dragons she knew about. The world contained more mystical entities than she'd previously imagined.
After Danny completed his demonstration, Ivan leaned toward his microphone. "Did you learn that attack method in Kunlun?"
Danny considered his response briefly, then chose honesty. "Yes, this is Kung Fu I learned in Kunlun. It's a technique for controlling chi."
Ivan's interest sharpened at the mention of chi. He'd learned about the concept through the Fraternity—Korin was teaching organization members the same thing chi or ki control techniques at the tower. Ivan had attempted the training himself, flying up to Korin Tower in his Blue Dynamo armor, but because he'd used technological assistance rather than climbing naturally, Korin had refused to teach him.
The organization's leader, Smith Doyle, reportedly derived much of his overwhelming power from ki mastery. Ivan wondered whether Danny's chi and the Fraternity's ki were identical concepts or merely similar.
Throughout the audience, core Fraternity members who were watching the demonstration had the same question. Were Kunlun's chi techniques and the organization's training methodologically equivalent?
"It's a very powerful ability," Ivan said into his microphone. "Capable of handling mid-range attacks effectively. You clearly have a place among enhanced individuals."
The chi connection made Ivan more favorably disposed toward Danny's candidacy.
Tony leaned toward Smith, speaking quietly enough that his words wouldn't be picked up by the judge's microphone. "Smith, Danny's attack looks somewhat similar to your energy waves."
Smith smiled slightly. "You said it—somewhat similar."
His transmigrator knowledge provided context the others lacked. Danny Rand's iteration as Iron Fist was actually the weakest among all historical holders of the title. When compared to legendary predecessors, his abilities were underwhelming.
That said, evaluated independently, Danny possessed respectable capabilities. At full power, he'd once destroyed a high-speed train with his fists and even demolished a S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier. His comic combat record included victories over formidable opponents—Gorgon, Sabretooth, Black Panther, Nighthawk, Spider-Man, Daredevil, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Wolverine, Captain America, and numerous other heroes.
However, in terms of raw strength, he was inferior to Shang-Chi who'd completely inherited the Dragon Heart with accumulated power from previous generations. The current Shang-Chi hadn't inherited that legacy—his potential exceeded Danny's, but his current strength lagged behind.
Of course, without forced growth through inherited power, Shang-Chi might ultimately reach higher peaks through natural development. And Danny still had considerable room for growth—he was nowhere near his own potential maximum.
Smith addressed Danny directly, his voice carrying clearly through the venue. "We've all observed your strength. It's more than sufficient for superhero work. Now tell us about your philosophy regarding heroes and your plans if selected."
Danny nodded, organizing his thoughts before beginning. "Before I discuss my philosophy, I'd like to explain my personal experience."
He drew a breath, then spoke with measured cadence. "My full name is Daniel Thomas Rand-K'ai. I was born into a prosperous New York family—the Rands. When I was nine years old, I went mountain climbing with my parents and my father's business partner, Harold Meacham."
His expression darkened with old pain. "During that climb, Harold engineered my parents' deaths, taking advantage of a dangerous situation to eliminate them. I fell from a cliff but was fortunately rescued by an archer from Kunlun."
Danny's voice steadied as he continued. "To avenge my father, I followed the archer to Kunlun to learn martial arts. After intense training, I finally passed the trials, defeated Shou Lao, inherited the title of Iron Fist, and returned to New York."
