I started dusting invisible dust off my shirt when Hardin broke the silence. "So… what's it gonna be? You're going to reject Aaron and what? Play Juliet with your Romeo and elope with him somewhere far away from your father's world? Is that it?"
He tilted his chin. "Is that what he promised you, or…" He shook his head. "Maybe you've just planned everything in your head by yourself. Tell me."
I didn't say a word. But his words hit somewhere deep because, slowly, I almost let myself consider that he might be right. I've actually not thought that far.
"He's the King's subject." He jabbed a finger vaguely into the air. "The Beta. You probably forgot that Jeremy owes my father his allegiance the moment he pledged his life to the throne."
He moved closer. "And just because you've suddenly fallen in love with him, he's supposed to throw everything away just to have a girl?"
His eyes held mine. "The same girl who already belongs to his Alpha?"
