Early May

Finals week arrived like a natural disaster sudden, overwhelming, and leaving destruction in its wake.

"I can't do this," I said, face-planted on my textbook at 2 AM. "My brain is full. No more information will fit."

Kai looked up from his laptop, equally exhausted. "You have to do this. It's Organic Chemistry. You need at least a B to stay on track for med school."

"I'm aware. That's why I'm having a breakdown."

"You're not having a breakdown. You're tired. There's a difference."

"Is there though?"

He closed his laptop and pulled me away from the kitchen table. "Break time. You've been studying for six hours straight."

"I can't take a break. The final is in eight hours."

"Which is exactly why you need to rest. Your brain can't process information when you're exhausted." He guided me to the couch carefully, because Margaret was asleep there, curled under a blanket. We'd gotten good at moving quietly around her space.
