David's POV
My entire body trembled the moment I stepped outside. Each step felt unstable, like my legs might give out beneath me. I made it to the car, dismissed the driver with a sharp gesture, and slid behind the wheel. My phone felt heavy in my unsteady hands.
The shaking made it nearly impossible to dial her number. After several attempts, I finally managed to place the call. When it went straight to voicemail, frustration coursed through me like fire.
I let the phone drop and pressed my forehead against the steering wheel, gripping it until my knuckles went white. Closing my eyes, I forced myself to breathe deeply. I pictured Cornelia's touch, the way her scent lingered on my skin, those incredible eyes looking at me with such tenderness and devotion.
"She loves me," I whispered, my voice barely audible and still shaking. "She actually loves me."
The trembling gradually subsided. My heartbeat found its rhythm again.
