Chapter 571: Awakening of the Death Throne
Violent lightning erupted inside Fenris's skull.
The giant wolf howled miserably. The deathly aura in its mouth was forcibly blasted away by the thunder, and its crushing bite loosened by a fraction.
Thor seized the opening, tumbling out of the wolf's maw and planting his boots heavily on Fenris's snout.
He lost his footing and nearly slipped off. But he reached out, grabbed a jagged, broken bone spur, and forcefully hauled himself up to the crown of the giant wolf's head.
Fenris thrashed wildly, desperately trying to shake him off.
Thor dropped to one knee on the wolf's skull, bringing his fists down in a brutal, relentless barrage.
Every punch crackled with lightning.
Every strike was heavier than the last.
"You want to get past?!"
Boom!
"Not before you ask my fists!"
Boom!
"Did you ask Asgard!?"
Boom!
Across the battlefield, Kaido noticed Hela momentarily distracted by Fenris. A savage grin split his face.
"Where are you looking, you crazy bitch!"
The ground beneath Kaido's feet shattered.
In his Hybrid Form, he looked like a rampaging, moving iron tower as he charged straight at Hela.
Kaido, Governor-General of the Beasts Pirates, former Yonko, with a staggering bounty of 4,611,100,000 Beri.
Now, he was a security guard at the Partys Bar in Foosha Village, Employee No. 007.
Several black blades were still embedded in his flesh, scalding hot blood streaming down his muscular abdomen.
Yet, his laughter only grew louder.
His right fist was wrapped in the dark red lightning of Conqueror's Haki, his knuckles burning with the golden aura granted by his Saiyan physique.
He threw a devastating punch.
Hela spun around, raising her blades to block.
The power of Death Magic and Conqueror's Haki collided with a deafening roar.
The plaza floor fractured inch by inch beneath their feet. The resulting shockwave—a volatile mix of black and dark red energy—swept away the surrounding Berserkers like dry weeds.
Hela was forced half a step back.
Her expression turned exceedingly ugly.
Kaido didn't give her a single moment to recover. His left hand shot out to seize her shoulder, while his right knee drove viciously toward her abdomen.
In a flash, Hela manifested three black blades: one to block the punch, one to slice at his knee, and one to thrust straight into his gut.
Sququelch!
The black blade pierced completely through Kaido's abdomen.
The tip tore out from his lower back, bringing a massive spray of blood with it.
Hela leaned in close, her voice dripping with high-handed mockery. "Did you truly believe you could compare yourself to a god?"
Kaido glanced down at the blade lodged in his stomach.
He didn't retreat.
Instead, he pushed forward, driving himself deeper onto the blade.
The black steel slid further into his body.
Hela's eyes darkened.
Reaching out, Kaido gripped her wrist in a vice-like hold. He grinned, his mouth completely stained with blood.
"A god?"
"I've seen someone way more arrogant than you back on Namek!"
"That white-skinned lizard dared to blow up an entire planet!"
"And now the grass on his grave is already scorched to ash!"
Hela didn't understand what Namek was, nor did she care.
She merely found the man to be an annoyance. An exceedingly irritating one.
He couldn't be killed. He couldn't be driven back. He was harder to deal with than Asgard's most ancient, warmongering hounds.
She raised her other hand, a lethal black blade instantly taking shape right against Kaido's throat.
But Kaido struck first, slamming his head forward.
Bang!
Their foreheads collided with a sickening crunch.
Hela stumbled back a step. The skin on Kaido's forehead split open, blood streaming down the bridge of his nose.
But he was thrilled to the absolute limit.
"Yeah, just like that!"
"Stop with that flashy, useless magic!"
"Put your damn life on the line and fight me!"
Kaido's fists rained down like a torrential storm.
Hela retaliated with ruthless precision using her black blades.
Fists shattered swords.
Swords cleaved through dragon scales.
Conqueror's Haki and Death Magic clashed again and again in a terrifying display, thoroughly reducing the royal plaza to a wasteland of rubble.
The golden stone steps leading to the throne collapsed.
The monument of conquest Odin had erected in his youth was snapped in half by the shockwaves.
Seeing that monument fall, the fury on Hela's face only deepened.
Her name wasn't on it.
It never had been.
She had conquered the Nine Realms for Asgard. And in the end, it was she who had been mercilessly erased.
"You all deserve to die."
Hela's Death Magic surged exponentially. A dense, horrifying cluster of black blades sprouted from her back.
Kaido licked the blood from the corner of his mouth.
"Now that's more like it."
Over on Thor's side, Fenris had gone completely berserk.
Enduring the lightning, the wolf frantically smashed into the palace walls, violently bucking Thor off its head.
Thor tumbled through the air and slammed heavily into the ground.
The wound on his shoulder tore open, blood running down to his elbow.
Fenris lunged, its bloody maw snapping toward his head.
Thor planted his foot squarely against one of the wolf's fangs and grabbed another with both hands.
Lightning crackled wildly across his entire body. His lungs felt like they were burning with hellfire.
He couldn't hold on much longer.
Just then, Heimdall's hoarse, furious roar echoed from the rear.
"Crown Prince!"
"The people of Asgard are watching you!"
Thor's eyelids twitched violently.
He saw the people in the evacuation channel.
The children, the elderly, the wounded soldiers.
And Frigga.
And Odin.
They weren't urging him to win.
They were just hoping he could hold the line.
Just holding the line is enough.
Thor stared down into the rotting, dark abyss of Fenris's mouth, and the last shred of fear in his heart was completely crushed.
The God of Thunder didn't charge forward because he was fearless.
He charged forward because, even when terrified, he had to stand his ground.
With a roaring battle cry, Thor unleashed every ounce of strength in his body.
Crack!
He brutally ripped one of Fenris's massive fangs right out of its jaw.
The giant wolf howled in agony, half its mouth tearing open.
Grasping the massive fang, Thor channeled a violent surge of lightning around it, transforming the bone into a crude but deadly spear of lightning.
"Crawl back into your grave!"
He leaped into the air and drove the lightning spear ruthlessly into Fenris's eye socket.
Boom!
The apocalyptic lightning detonated directly inside the giant wolf's skull.
Half of the wolf's head shattered. Rotting flesh, bone fragments, and deathly flames scattered across the sky.
Fenris's colossal corpse lost its balance and began to topple backward, dragging its chains along.
Thor grabbed the chain, the lightning on his arms flaring brightly as he desperately dragged the giant wolf's remains toward the underworld rift.
Fenris's claws carved deep trenches into the ground.
The stone slabs beneath Thor's feet shattered with every step.
Finally, with a heaven-shaking roar, he hurled the chains downward.
Fenris's ruined body plummeted back into the rift, crushing a massive swath of Berserkers who had just climbed out.
A dull, echoing thud resonated from the depths of the chasm.
Thor stood at the edge, gasping for air.
His shoulder was bleeding profusely.
But the violent lightning still burned furiously around him.
Hela finally halted her assault.
She glanced at the rift, then at Thor.
That giant wolf, which had accompanied her in conquering the Nine Realms, had been beaten back underground by her cowardly younger brother's own hands.
Her patience had completely run out.
"Enough."
Hela slammed both hands onto the ground.
The entirety of Asgard began to quake violently.
Golden bricks were stained pitch-black one by one.
The ancient runes carved into the palace walls were frantically devoured by Death Magic.
Odin's expression changed.
He spoke in a low, heavy voice. "She's seizing the authority of the throne."
Black and green veins crawled outward from beneath Hela's feet.
First the royal plaza.
Then the shattered stone steps.
Finally, even the golden tiles near Odin's feet were tainted a dark hue by a layer of deathly aura.
The statues Kaido had smashed began to writhe and twist.
The monument of conquest Odin had erected in his youth rose once more, but it was no longer a monument—it was a forest of jagged spikes.
Broken walls curled back.
Shattered stones fused together.
A throne of spikes, forged from black blades, pale bones, and the ruins of the palace, slowly rose behind Hela.
She stood before the throne, spreading her arms wide.
The black battle suit on her body mended itself completely, her shoulder armor jutting out like sharp knives.
She looked up at Odin, a faint, chilling smile on her lips.
"Father."
"Your kingdom finally remembers its true master."
