It was finally night time, the whole city looked calm as bright lights twinkled in the dark coming from the buildings. The night sky was filled with stars and the moon shone brightly, overlooking the city. Though Lagos city was beautiful at night, the residents retired to bed with fear praying for God to save them.
Aurora before retiring to sleep made sure that Mirabel took a proper shower and a hearty meal, Mirabel looked like hell and she was not happy about it. After she was done eating, Aurora showed her to her room which was next to Aron's.
"Goodnight and thank you so much for your help" Mirabel hugged her
"You're welcome, it's the least I can do. You should get some rest now, don't worry about them finding you. This place is really private and the only person who knows that is my dad" Aurora said
"I still can't believe the governor is your father, i only found out after Gabi's death" Mirabel said
"It's not something I'm proud of" Aurora shrugged feeling hurt
"You're going up against your own father" Mirabel said scanning her face
"I guess i am. He stopped being my father a long time ago so I don't mind" Aurora said getting tired of the conversation
Mirabel opened her mouth to say more but Aurora beat her to it
"Goodnight Mirabel. I need to rest now"
With that, Mirabel retired to her room and shut the door. Aurora started walking back to her room but she stopped in front of Aron's door and stood there for a while, her phone suddenly started ringing. She checked the caller id and saw it was her dad.
"Hello?" She said with a tired voice
"What the hell is wrong with you?!" The governor's voice boomed out of the phone
Aurora kept quiet, a bit confused and angry
"I told you to stay away from this mess but you wouldn't listen! You've already lost David, do you want to get killed too?!" Martin shouted angrily
"What are you talking about?" Aurora asked trying to control her anger
"Why are you investigating the purple Lagoon and the government officials?!"
Oh so that's why he's angry. She thought
"Dad i don't see why you're making a fuss over this, I'm a journalist and this is basically my job!" She yelled
"I don't care about that your devil damned job! Infact I don't want to hear that "journalist" from your stricken mouth again. Let this be the last time you'll mingle in this case again, the government is handling it so stay back" martin boiled
"What government?! The same one that's secretly involved with these terrorists?! You think I don't know your dirty secret" Aurora was getting really angry
"The government has nothing to do with the purple Lagoon"
"Keep fooling yourself, I'm not a kid anymore. I know everything and I'll make sure I expose you guys" she threatened
"The day you try that, the day I'll forget i gave birth to you" martin said, his voice laced with a threat
Aurora froze for a while but soon regained herself
"Are you threatening me?" She asked
"Call it whatever you want, I'm just warning you. You've lost David, don't add yourself to the list too. I'm watching you Aurora, be very careful" with that he ends the call
Aurora just stood there, her heart suddenly pounding in fear. Her father is willing to kill her just to protect his secret. Her tummy suddenly started rumbling and she clutched it in pain, a wave of goosebumps washed all over her as she trembled suddenly feeling endangered.
She felt alone and tired, tears slowly dripped out of her eyes. She tried to hold it in but couldn't, what came out as slient sobs soon turned to loud sobs. She quickly covered her mouth to avoid anyone hearing her but it was already too late, Aron opened his door and saw her
"Aurora?" He quickly went closer to her and pulled her into a hug
"What's going on? I heard yellings. Why are you crying?" He asked rubbing her back slowly
"I'm tired" she cried
Aron just let her into his room and shut the door. He guided her to his bed and sat her down while he kneeled in front of her
"Talk to me, what's wrong?" He said searching her eyes
"I'm tired of everything and everyone. I just feel like everything is falling apart, first i lost the love of my life, this idiots called the purple Lagoon raiding my city and ruining my life, and now my own father...." She stopped as she cried more
Aron just held her hands and pressed them gently. He knelt there ready to listen to all that she had to say
"I'm.... I'm just tired and I feel so afraid. Sometimes I tell myself I'm brave enough to handle this mess but deep down i know that's a lie. I couldn't even save my boyfriend, i couldn't even stand up to my father...."
Aron stood up and sat beside her, he wrapped his arm around her and pulled her closer to him.
"You lost your boyfriend to the purple Lagoon?" He asked
"Yes, he was trying to save me and ended up getting killed. It's all my fault, i miss him everyday and I keep having nightmares about him" she sniffed
Aron felt somehow as she mentioned "Boyfriend". He felt like he had met her before loosing his memory
"I'm sorry about that" he said as he rubbed her back. He suddenly felt guilty for reasons unknown to him
"Then there's my stupid God forsaken father" she chuckled in tears "a father's supposed to love and protect you but all mine does is just throw money in your face and make threats"
"What do you mean?" Aron asked
Aurora wiped her tears and turned towards him with scared eyes. Aron couldn't help but wish he could take her sorrows away, but he hardly knew anything about Aurora.
"Can I trust you?" She said looking into his eyes
"Yes" he said wanting to know her more
"You know the governor right? He's popular so I'm sure you can remember him" she said
Aron nodded "yes Governor Martin Obafemi. I have amnesia, I'm not dumb" he joked trying to lighten the mood
Aurora chuckled "sorry"
"So what about him?" Aron asked
"Um well he's actually my father" she said bending her face
Aron was a bit shocked.
"Your...your father?" He stammered
"Yeah, it's not something I'm proud of" she said
"Why?"
"Because he's an evil man and everyone knows that." She said
"And he was the one calling you earlier?"
Aurora nodded
"Yeah. He was threatening me..." Aurora stopped feeling unsure whether she could really trust Aron with her secret. They barely knew eachother but somehow she felt safe with him, even though everything about him screamed danger and mystery.
"He threatened you? Why would he do that?" Aron was getting curious. He wanted to unravel this beautiful enigma before him
"Are you sure i can trust you?" She searched his eyes
"Yes you can" he said sincerely
"Hmmmm okay here goes nothing" she breathed in "I'll tell you everything about me, not all just details"
"Go on"
"Aron, I'm a journalist and as a journalist it's my job to find out why things happened and then bring the hidden secrets to light. I believe there's a link between the purple Lagoon and the government, so I'm investigating them. There's a secert powerful group in the government that caused all this mess and sadly my dad is part of them"
Aron just nodded. He didn't feel surprised by what she told him, he felt like he already knew all these and it scared him
"So your dad wants you to stop investigating him? That's why he threatened you" he said looking into her eyes
"Yes"
"And you feel like you're alone, afraid of ending up like your lost love" he said feeling bad for her
"Yeah" the tears came again
Aron just hugged her and patted her back
"You're not alone Aurora, I'm here for you." He whispered
"Really?" Aurora sniffed
"Yeah. Just like you, I'm afraid too" he said
"Afraid of what?" She pulled away from him and searched his eyes
"Afraid of remembering who I am. It scares me to know that my memories may not be as pleasant as i want them to be" he said staring at the wall behind Aurora sadly "i keep seeing faces i don't want to see, voices i don't want to hear. Honestly i feel like remaining this way, calm and not knowing who i am....it feels right"
Aurora's eyes softened as he said all this, she was seeing the weak side of him and it just broke her heart to see him this way but it also made her feel like she wasn't alone
"i don't really know what to say to comfort you but i know we're both going through our own hard times, everything feels different, faces we know keep betraying and it feels like we stuck in this entangled web. But i know everything will soon be clear, just as you're here for me, know that I'm here for you too" she said lifting his face to meet her eyes
"Thanks" Aron smiled
"You're welcome" she smiled back
Aron leaned closer to her face wanting to kiss her but suddenly remembered she was mourning her boyfriend. He pulled away out of respect and just hugged her. They both remained silent for a while
"Um sorry, i need to get some sleep now" Aurora said suddenly pulling away
"Okay"
She stood up and walked over to the door while Aron watched her. She turned back towards him and smiled nervously
"Sorry for crying, it felt weak and kinda weird"
"Don't apologise, crying doesn't make you weak. It just means you've been strong for too long" he smiled
"Thank you. I really appreciate the way you just listened, i really needed someone to talk to so thank you so much"
"Don't mention it. Thanks for listening too, i hope we do this more often instead of bottling everything up"
"Yeah I'd love that"
"Great"
"Goodnight Aron" she smiled
"Sweet dreams Aurora" he smiled back
With that Aurora walked out of the room and rushed to her room feeling motivated again. Her dad was going down and nothing he says, will stop her.
"We die here, for David and for every victim that's suffered cause of you" she muttered looking at the night sky through her window
