The morning sunrise cast it's gentle light on my face as I landed in another city, mom thought that moving me here was going to make me leave the weight of my sorrows behind like a forgotten shadow, but even its warmth couldn't chase away the shadows of heartache that lingered in my eyes.
I walked out of the airport looking around for the person who was supposed to pick me up, who I haven't seen for twenty-one years. Looking from a distance I saw a woman waving at me with long blonde hair she was wearing a long black and white dress with silver heels. From the distance I could really tell she was beautiful with golden eyes which were exactly like mom's, from that moment I definitely knew that was mom's sister 'my aunt'. She was just as beautiful as my mother, I walked towards her as she ran and pulled me into a tight hug.
"How are you my dear? "she said as she releases me from the hug with a huge smile.
"Am fine aunt "I said with a low voice forcing a smile on my face not to be rude. "Let's go" aunt said taking my suitcase from me and leading the way to the car. The driver come out and she introduced me to him as he carried my bags into the car and opened the door for us. We entered the car and it drove off from the airport. The ride was in total silence until aunt broke the silence by saying "How is your mother?". "She is fine" I answered, "How is Hazel" I continued with a faint smile looking at her. "She is doing fine; she was so excited you were coming that she wanted to skip work today just to pick you up herself but she had an emergency at the hospital".
"Aah she is a doctor, that's great" I said with a surprised voice. "YES, she is a very good one too" aunt said as I gave her a smile. "So dear I heard what you are going through, how are..." she said and I immediately cut her off "Please aunt I don't want to talk about it" I said with a low voice. She just nodded and the rest of the ride was in total silence again.
The car came to a halt as we arrived at a huge mansion, l knew aunt was rich but not this rich, the mansion was very beautiful. It was a two-story building with its warm, honey-colored stone walls, perfectly manicured emerald green lawns and beautiful flowers around the edges of the entrance. We stepped out of the car and walked to the front door as l followed aunt in and Ben the driver followed with my bags. The mansion was very beautiful there was a long staircase with black and white banister adorning it. A crystal chandelier, beautiful paintings hanging on the walls, a pink rose and black carpet in front of the staircase and all the walls in the house were painted white. In the middle of admiring the house l heard a voice calling my name from the distance.
"Vee...Vee. Vee!" Hazel shouted coming out from a room which seemed like the study. She come closer crossing the distance between us as she gave me a bone crushing hug which for some reason just felt right. I felt really safe in her arms and I just wanted her to hold me forever, I felt tears coming as she releases me from her arms. "Hazel how are you, it's been long "I said with a genuine smile on my face.
"Am fine, I really had missed you Vee "Hazel replied feeling the warmth of her happiness in her voice. I couldn't help it but smile I really had missed her. "I really had missed you too" I replied. "Where are my manners, you must be tired let me show you to your room" Hazel said with so much excitement. She led the way upstairs as l followed her obediently and quietly, thinking maybe mom was right this is what I really needed a new environment but Hazel kept on talking all the way to my room she was really a chatterbox, somethings never change since we were kids she has always talked a lot and never give anyone a chance to respond.
We reached this marvelous big bedroom with soaring ceilings, crisp white walls and elegant floor to ceiling windows draped with shimmering silver curtains. It was beautiful. "If you are done admiring your bedroom now tell me how is life? Any boyfriend?" Hazel said with so much excitement in her voice. "Life is ok and no boyfriend, am really tired l want to rest" l said with a hush voice, Hazel just nodded and left. I knew what I did wasn't right but from hearing the word boyfriend something inside just broke into a million pieces. I just went and locked the door then throwed myself on the bed and cried myself to sleep, this wasn't new to me.
