Otis let out a quiet "Oh," unable to steady the pounding in his chest.
He glanced at Mei, then back up at the artificial night sky.

The moment they closed the door, Otis let go of Mei's hand.

He was about to go into his room to get the small gift he bought for her, but Mei remained by the door, looking at him.
Her voice was soft, almost trembling.

Her eyes shimmered, uncertain, hesitant.
Otis didn't understand what she meant.
