"What do you mean?" I whispered, my voice trembling as I finally found the courage to speak. "What do you mean by 'it won't hurt me'?"
Leon didn't answer with words. Instead, he shifted his weight, his hand moving from my shoulder to my waist, firmly but gently rolling me over until I was flat on my back, looking directly up at him.
He leaned over me, framing my head with his arms, and then he reached out. His fingers were surprisingly warm as they cupped my face, his thumb grazing my cheekbone with a tenderness that felt like a trap.
His hand drifted down, coming to rest flat against my chest. He stayed there for a moment, feeling the frantic, uneven rhythm of my pulse against his palm. "Why is your heart beating so fast, Beck?" he asked, his voice a low, dark vibration.
I couldn't speak. My throat was too tight, my lungs refusing to draw a full breath.
