Jefferson's POV
"How difficult would it be to accidentally poison someone while keeping their unborn child completely safe?" Elisabeth muttered as we settled into the car, her tone sharp with barely contained frustration.
I couldn't suppress the slight curve of my lips, though I kept quiet about her murderous thoughts.
She folded her arms tightly across her chest and slumped against the leather seat. "Pretend I never said that out loud. I just can't stand that insufferable woman." Her words cut off abruptly as she released a heavy breath.
I turned the key in the ignition, stealing a glance at her rigid posture. "Why not simply walk away from the case?"
"Because that's precisely what she wants," Elisabeth grumbled, her jaw set with determination. "She's counting on me to quit, to prove her right about my incompetence. I refuse to hand her that victory. I can maintain my professionalism, and after this baby arrives, I'll seriously consider that poisoning option."
