Chapter 120 - Chapter 120: The Shadow Trade

Lina took a step forward. The cold air from the stone door hit her face.

"Lina, please!" Mira cried. She grabbed Lina's hand again. Her fingers were shaking. "Do not do this. We will find another way."

Lina turned and gently held Mira's face. "There is no other way, Mira. The water is coming. The cage is breaking. This is the only way to save him."

Lina let go of her friend's hand. She turned back to the heavy stone door. She reached out.

The False Kai smiled. His empty eyes watched her every move. "Good," he whispered. "Walk into the glass."

"Stop!" a voice yelled from the stairs.

Lina froze. She turned her head.

Reyon was running down the stone steps. He was out of breath. His uniform was torn, and his hands were glowing with a strange, messy light.

"Do not touch the door, Lina!" Reyon shouted. He ran past her and stood between Lina and the False Kai.

"Reyon?" Lina asked. "What are you doing? You need to get back."

"I heard what he said," Reyon panted. He looked at the False Kai. "The mirror wants a trade. It wants a reflection to replace the boy in the glass."

The False Kai tilted his head. "Yes. And she is offering herself."

"But she is not a reflection," Reyon said. His voice was getting stronger. "And you do not need a real person. You just need a reflection."

Reyon raised his hands. The messy, glowing light around his fingers grew brighter. It was his sticky illusion magic. But it looked different now. It was darker. It looked like liquid shadow.

"My magic is broken," Reyon said. "My illusions do not fade anymore. They stick to the ground. They stick to the walls. They became real."

Reyon looked down at his feet. The basement was dark, but Reyon cast a long, black shadow on the stone floor.

"I have been practicing," Reyon whispered. "I made my shadow stay."

Reyon kicked his foot.

To Lina's shock, the shadow on the floor did not move with him. It stayed perfectly still. Then, slowly, the shadow began to peel itself off the stone.

It stood up. It was a perfect, dark copy of Reyon. It had no face, just a smooth, black shape, but it moved like a real boy.

The False Kai took a step back. His perfect smile vanished. "That is just a trick. It is not a real soul."

"It is a perfect reflection," Reyon said. "It looks like me. It moves like me. It is made of my magic. The mirror only cares about the reflection, not the soul. That is the rule of the glass."

The False Kai stared at the shadow boy. He looked at the stone door. The door was humming louder now. The mirror was listening.

"The mirror is full of reflections," Reyon said. "Take my shadow. Let the real boy go."

The basement was completely silent. The only sound was the deep, heavy humming of the stone door.

The False Kai's flat eyes narrowed. He looked at the shadow boy, then at Lina.

"If I accept this," the False Kai said slowly, "the rules of the trade change forever. The mirror will never need a real person again. It will only need a shadow."

"Take it," Reyon said bravely.

The False Kai smiled again. It was a slow, terrible smile. "Very well."

He snapped his fingers.

The heavy stone door swung open. The shadow boy walked forward and stepped into the dark glass. The door slammed shut with a loud, final boom.

The humming stopped.

Then, the stone door cracked down the middle. A bright, warm light spilled out into the dark basement.

A boy fell out of the light and hit the stone floor.

It was Kai. The real Kai.

He was coughing and wet, but he was breathing. He was real.

Lina fell to her knees and pulled him into her arms. She was crying. He was alive.

But as she held him, she looked up at Reyon.

Reyon was staring at the floor.

The basement was bright with the light from the door. But Reyon had no shadow.

And the False Kai was gone.
