The basement was completely quiet. The bright light from the cracked stone door faded into a dull, sickly glow.
Lina held the real Kai tightly. He was shaking. His clothes were soaking wet, and he felt freezing cold. But he was real. He was breathing. He was here.
"Kai," Lina cried softly. She brushed the wet hair out of his eyes. "You are back. You are really back."
Kai did not hug her back. His arms hung loosely at his sides. He just stared at the stone floor, his chest heaving as he tried to catch his breath.
A few feet away, Reyon was on his knees. He was staring at the stone wall.
"Reyon?" Lina called out gently. "Are you okay?"
Reyon did not answer. He slowly raised his hand and waved it in front of the wall. The bright light from the door hit him perfectly. But the wall behind him was blank.
He had no shadow.
Reyon let out a small, broken sound. He touched his own chest. "I feel empty," he whispered. His voice sounded thin and hollow, like wind blowing through a pipe. "I feel so light. Like I am going to float away."
Losing a shadow was not just a trick of the light. It was losing a piece of yourself that tied you to the real world. Reyon looked up at Lina, and his eyes were wide with a new, quiet terror. He looked like a ghost.
"We need to get you both to the medical wing," Lina said. She tried to stand up, pulling Kai with her.
But Kai's hand clamped down on her wrist. His grip was incredibly strong. His fingers dug into her skin.
"No," Kai croaked. His voice was rough, like he had swallowed glass. "We cannot leave. We have to block the door."
Lina froze. She looked down at him. His face was pale and covered in dirt. But his eyes were not empty like the False Kai. They were wide, wild, and full of pure panic.
"Kai, you are safe now," Lina said softly. "Reyon traded his shadow. The mirror accepted it. You are out."
Kai shook his head violently. Tears mixed with the dirty water on his face. "You do not understand," he cried. "The mirror is not a cage, Lina. It is a door."
Lina's stomach dropped. "What do you mean?"
Kai pulled her closer. He was shaking so hard his teeth chattered. "I was not just trapped in the dark," he whispered. "There were others in there. Hundreds of them. All the people the mirrors ever took. All the real people who were replaced."
Mira covered her mouth. Seren started to cry quietly.
"They were all standing in the dark," Kai said, his voice breaking. "They were watching me. They were waiting."
"Waiting for what?" Nia asked. She stepped closer, her hands glowing with faint blue light.
Kai looked up at the cracked stone door. His eyes were filled with tears and absolute horror.
"They did not let me escape," Kai whispered. "They pushed me out. They used my body to break the seal from the inside."
A loud, sharp crack echoed in the basement.
Lina looked at the heavy stone door. The crack down the middle was getting wider.
"They are coming through behind me," Kai sobbed.
From inside the dark glass, a sound began. It was not a hum. It was not a whisper.
It was the sound of a hundred hands pressing against the glass. And then, the sound of a hundred voices, all speaking at the exact same time.
Let us out. Let us out. Let us out.
The stone door began to bulge outward.
