She was early. That was the only reason the door was open.
Ranon had asked her to collect a document from the business property on the Via Condotti, a folder of contracts that Diego was supposed to have left at the front office. A routine task. She had been to the property three times since Madrid, knew the staff, knew the layout. She arrived twelve minutes earlier than she would have if she had left when she intended, because she had walked faster than usual today, because the morning had been still and cool and Madrid at speed was a pleasure.
The front office was empty. She went to the desk where Diego usually left things and found nothing there, which meant it was in the back office or the meeting room on the lower level. She had been to the lower meeting room once before. She took the stairs.
The door at the end of the corridor was not fully closed.
