Chapter 26 - THE QUIET ONES

Diego had been with Ranon Vescari for eleven years, which meant he had been watching him for eleven years, which was different from working for him in the way that observation was different from labor. The labor was the visible part. The observation was what made the labor possible.

He started his mornings at five-thirty. Not because five-thirty was required. Because five-thirty was when the house was still in the specific state of before, before the day's agenda asserted itself and before every surface in the building was occupied with what needed to happen next. He used the before-hours to walk the perimeter, check the security rotations, review the overnight communications from the New York and Valencia teams, and make the small adjustments that a property like this required as a matter of course.

This morning he also checked on the brother.
