Chapter 42: BEACH NEGOTIATIONS
POV: Ivyn Mikaelson
[June 1, 2018 — Malibu Beach — 8:30 PM]
Sand crunched under my sneakers as I made my way down the path. The sun had set an hour ago, leaving streaks of orange and purple bleeding into the Pacific.
Sam sat on a driftwood log near the water's edge. Her silhouette was rigid. Shoulders squared. Arms crossed. The posture of someone who'd made a decision.
"This is either a breakup or an ultimatum. Neither ends well if I handle it wrong."
She heard me coming. Turned. The last light caught her face—beautiful and furious and sad all at once.
"You're late."
"Finished my push-ups."
"Of course you did."
I sat on the log beside her. Not touching. The foot of space between us felt like miles.
"Sam—"
"It's Cobra Kai or me."
The words landed like punches. Direct. No warning.
I laughed.
Not mockingly—genuine, bubbling laughter that surprised even me. She stared like I'd grown a second head.
"What's funny about this?"
"That's not how this works." I turned to face her fully. "I'm not choosing between parts of my life. I'm choosing to be complete."
"That's not—you can't just—"
I picked her up.
She yelped, legs kicking, as I spun her around in a circle. Once. Twice. Set her down on the sand facing me, hands on her shoulders.
"Join me instead of fighting me!"
"Put me down! I'm serious!"
"So am I!" I released her, stepping back. "Sam, Cobra Kai isn't my enemy and it doesn't have to be yours. It's just a tool. A way of training. The philosophy can be adjusted. The techniques are just techniques."
"The philosophy is toxic! Strike first, strike hard, no mercy? That's not karate, it's assault training!"
"Then help me change it from the inside."
She paused. Mouth open. Ready argument dying before it reached air.
"What?"
"You know Miyagi-Do. Balance, defense, patience. I know Cobra Kai. Aggression, offense, decisiveness. What if we combined them? Defense when you need it, offense when you don't have a choice. A complete style."
"My father would never—"
"Your father doesn't need to know. Not yet."
Sam stared at me. The anger was still there, but curiosity had joined it. That brilliant mind of hers working through implications.
"You want me to train with you in secret."
"I want to teach you to fight. Really fight. Not the katas and forms your dad shows tourists. The real stuff. How to end a threat before it ends you."
"Why?"
"Because I've seen what's coming. Because Tory arrives any day now. Because the school fight might still happen and if it does, you need to be ready."
I couldn't say any of that.
"Want to know a secret?" I sat down in the sand, pulled her down with me. "I dream about the future sometimes. Not clearly, just... feelings. Impressions. I dreamed about you learning to fight. About us training together on a morning where everything felt right."
Sam's skepticism was visible. Tangible.
"You have psychic dreams."
"I have very accurate intuitions. Call them whatever you want." Not entirely a lie. The System wasn't psychic, but my transmigration knowledge functioned similarly enough.
"So you want to corrupt me too?"
"I want to protect you by making you dangerous. There's a difference."
The waves rolled in. Pulled back. Rolled in again. Sam watched them, processing.
"Why should I trust you? You've been lying to me about how deep you are into this. How obsessed you've become."
"Because I'm being honest now. This is who I am, Sam. The intensity isn't going away. The drive to improve, to protect, to become stronger—that's not a phase. But I can channel it better with your help. And you can become something incredible with mine."
She picked up a handful of sand. Let it sift through her fingers.
"My way. Not Cobra Kai's."
"Deal."
"I'm serious. No bloody knuckles. No breaking boards with my face. No 'pain is weakness leaving' psycho talk."
"I can work with that."
"And you dial back the crazy at the dojo."
"Define 'dial back.'"
She shoved me sideways. I caught myself on one hand, laughing.
"You're impossible."
"But you love me anyway."
"I'm reconsidering that decision daily."

We sat together as the stars came out. Her head found my shoulder. My arm found her waist. The tension bled away, replaced by something warmer.
"Tomorrow," she said. "Six AM. The park."
"Which park?"
"Griffith. There's a trail that nobody uses."
"Bring water. And determination."
"Bring your teaching skills. And maybe armor."
I grinned against her hair.
"I'll bring protein shakes."
"Absolutely not."
The waves kept rolling. Somewhere down the beach, a bonfire crackled. Voices carried on the wind—strangers having their own summer night, their own stories, their own transformations.
"Let's build something," Sam said suddenly.
"Build what?"
"Sandcastle."
We moved closer to the water where the sand was wetter, firmer. I shaped walls while she dug a moat. Our shoulders bumped. Hands brushed. The anger from earlier felt like a fever that had broken.
The castle grew. Towers and battlements and a crooked little flag made from driftwood and seaweed.
I karate chopped the main tower.
Sand exploded everywhere.
"WHY?!" Sam shrieked.
"Practice for breaking boards!"
She tackled me into the ruins of our creation. Sand filled my ears, my mouth, my shoes. I was laughing too hard to defend myself.
"You're insane!" She threw handfuls of sand at my face.
"I know!" I caught her wrists, pulled her close. "But you signed up for it anyway."
We lay in the wreckage of the sandcastle, breathing hard, covered in sand and salt spray. Her eyes caught the starlight.
"Tomorrow," she whispered. "Don't be late."
"Wouldn't dream of it."
We walked back to our cars hand in hand. The sand had gotten everywhere—my pockets, my socks, places sand had no business being. I'd be finding grains for weeks.
Worth it.
"Sam LaRusso, training in secret. A warrior princess in the making. Canon never saw this coming."
[Quest Updated: Summer of Pain]
[New Objective Added: Train Sam LaRusso]
[Bonus Reward: Teaching XP x2 multiplier]
At her car, she turned back.
"Tomorrow, 6 AM, the park?"
"Bring water and determination."
"And maybe armor?"
I kissed her forehead.
"Definitely armor."
