Chapter 62: Successful Development, the Power of the Rasengan
Starting from the second day, Yu Tianlin and Ye Lingling officially entered the development phase.
Before they could truly begin working on Rasengan, however, Ye Lingling first needed to improve her control over Spirit Power. Under Yu Tianlin's guidance, she started with the basics: climbing trees and walking on water.
Fortunately, Ye Lingling was different from Yu Tianlin and Shui Bing'er. Her Spirit Power had no obvious attribute, so she did not need to worry about elemental control. All she had to do was focus on refining her control as she climbed trees and tread upon the water's surface.
As for Yu Tianlin, he began working on the early-stage development of Rasengan.
In Naruto, learning Rasengan was divided into three stages.
The first stage required a balloon. You filled the balloon with water and placed it on your palm. Then, you released chakra from your palm to agitate the water inside until the balloon burst. The key was to stir the water in completely chaotic directions. Only by making the flow truly erratic could you pop the balloon.
However, there were no balloons on the Douluo Continent.
That was fine. Yu Tianlin found a substitute: a porcelain bowl as thin and fragile as ice.
These bowls were fired extremely thin and brittle. Yu Tianlin estimated that if he could generate enough force to burst a balloon, he could shatter these porcelain bowls in the same way. With that, the porcelain bowl became his replacement for the balloon.
He filled the bowl with water and held his hand about five centimeters above it. Without touching the bowl itself, he began using his Spirit Power to stir the water.
At the beginning, the Spirit Power that flowed from Yu Tianlin's palm could only rotate in a single direction. The water inside the bowl was stirred into a vortex, spinning rapidly.
But this did not work.
The water spun, the bowl trembled, but no matter how it shook, the porcelain did not break.
Fortunately, Yu Tianlin already understood the true essence of the first stage. He forced himself to control his Spirit Power into a pattern of irregular movement, changing direction, speed, and rotation constantly. After four days of focused practice, he finally succeeded. The water churned in chaotic currents, and with a crisp crack, the porcelain bowl shattered.
Just then, Ye Lingling finished her tree-climbing and water-walking training.
Yu Tianlin immediately shared all of his insights from the first stage with her and had her begin practicing that step, while he moved on to research the second stage.
The second stage required a ball. Fortunately, this item did exist on the Douluo Continent, so unlike the first stage, there was no need for a substitute.
In this stage, the goal was to crush the ball. A ball, however, was easily a hundred times tougher than a balloon, which meant the force needed to be amplified drastically on the basis of the first stage.
The trick to this stage lay in a single word: focus.
Only by concentrating could you better control the condensed Spirit Power, increasing its density and intensity until it reached the level of semi-materialization. At that point, it would finally be possible to crush the ball.
There was nothing particularly glamorous about the process. After a week of practice, Yu Tianlin finally broke through the bottleneck and successfully shattered the ball with his rotating Spirit Power.
At this point, Rasengan had already taken shape. It now possessed some real offensive power, but it was still not enough.
The energy inside this prototype version was spread out too thinly. When Yu Tianlin tested it by slamming it against a tree trunk, the result was only a shallow pattern spiraling on the bark, like a faint mosquito coil mark. If he had to compare, its power was probably just around the level of a ten-year Spirit Skill.
Still, there was no need to be impatient. Once the third stage was completed, Rasengan would truly be complete.
As before, Yu Tianlin first taught Ye Lingling everything he had comprehended about the second stage and let her practice on her own, while he moved into the third stage of development.
Because the power of the Rasengan prototype after the second stage was too scattered, the purpose of the third stage was to fully condense and compress that power.
In Naruto, this stage used an air-filled balloon. The Rasengan was formed inside the balloon itself.
Balloons were extremely fragile. If the power could not be perfectly controlled and compressed, the slightest leak would rupture the balloon. Every premature burst meant failure.
There were no tricks here. You simply practiced over and over until you could maintain the Rasengan stably without destroying the balloon.
On the Douluo Continent, Yu Tianlin still had to rely on porcelain bowls as his substitutes.
In the first stage, he had not been able to break a porcelain bowl at all. Only when it finally shattered did that count as success, so in that phase he only broke a single bowl.
The third stage was the complete opposite. Now, he started by breaking bowls non-stop, and would have to keep practicing until he could form the Rasengan inside the bowl without shattering it.
On the first day alone, Yu Tianlin broke dozens of bowls.
Under normal circumstances, ordinary porcelain bowls were not expensive. Even smashing a thousand of them would not cost much. But Yu Tianlin's bowls were a different story. These were ultra-thin porcelain, and each one cost twenty copper Spirit coins. Five bowls equaled one gold Spirit coin.
In other words, he burned through nearly ten gold Spirit coins in one day.
Fortunately, Yu Tianlin was not short on money. Even if he spent ten gold coins a day, that would only be three hundred gold coins a month. He believed he could complete Rasengan within that time.
Training continued like this for another week.
By then, Ye Lingling had already completed the second stage, but Yu Tianlin was still in the demolition business, shattering porcelain bowls and failing to stabilize the third stage.
It did not matter. After explaining the requirements of the third stage to Ye Lingling, the two of them began practicing together.
Finally, on the twenty-fifth day since their training began, Yu Tianlin successfully brought the Rasengan skill into the world of Douluo.
Looking at the blue-violet sphere of light quietly spinning in Yu Tianlin's palm, Ye Lingling asked, "Is this the complete version?"
"That's right. There are only three stages in total, so this counts as complete."
Yu Tianlin nodded and said, "I call this skill Rasengan."
As for its true power…
Yu Tianlin walked up to a nearby tree and pressed his completed Rasengan forward.
The action felt almost effortless. Yu Tianlin barely felt any resistance. The Rasengan chewed through the trunk in front of him, and his arm simply extended straight through.
After dispersing the Rasengan, the two of them leaned closer to inspect the damage.
A circular hole had been punched straight through the tree, exactly the same size as the Rasengan in Yu Tianlin's hand earlier.
Ye Lingling reached out and gently brushed the inside of the hole. It was as smooth as a mirror, without the slightest roughness.
"That's incredible," Ye Lingling murmured, a trace of disbelief in her voice.
She knew that in the second stage, the power of the Rasengan prototype had only been at around a ten-year Spirit Skill level. Although she had not said it out loud at the time, she had privately felt that Yu Tianlin might have failed this time.
Even so, because Yu Tianlin refused to give up, she had quietly chosen to stay by his side and accompany him through the so-called third stage of development.
What she had not expected was that once the third stage was completed, the skill would go through such a qualitative transformation.
The technique called Rasengan now possessed terrifyingly focused power.
