When Johnson stalked toward us, that bloodied iron rod still dripping with chunks of flesh, Joe completely lost it and started shrieking, "Don't hit me! Please, don't! I'll talk. I'll confess everything!"
Her breakdown turned her screams into something sharp and glass-shattering.
I paused mid-bite, my fork hanging in the air, but quickly went back to eating like nothing was happening, using the movement to cover up the grin threatening to break across my face.
Harold always picked up on my smallest reactions. He caught that little slip just now, but only dropped his eyes and stayed quiet about it.
Even though I'd been playing the good girl ever since we got back to Coralia, Harold wasn't stupid enough to buy that I was actually tamed.
I could tell he still remembered the rage and bloodlust I'd let loose in that lab on Jenifer Island.
That kind of killer instinct was something Harold recognized all too well.
