Chapter 24 - camping

Kai's partial plan wasn't even really plan. It was just an advantage that he discovered back in the alleyway when he threw his Arrow at Iris for the first time.

Iris reacted like she didn't expect anything to happen.

So he thought about it for a while, until he came up with a theory:

Maybe all she knows about them is from the nightclub.

Considering he never used his ability there, she might have thought he was powerless.

So he thought maybe they could take advantage of that by making Ren use his ability to take out Iris by spawning a shade behind her—since she doesn't know he can do that.

But here's where the problem came.

He tried to do that pretty early in the fight, but for some reason, he couldn't manifest his shades from other shadows—just from his body and his own shadow.

So during the fight, in the back of his mind, he was poking around with his ability, trying to see what the hell was going on, while still focusing on the battle.

But eventually, he noticed the pattern.

He couldn't use his ability to spawn a shade from the plants, Kai, or Iris.

But he did manage to spawn one out of the shadows of rocks.

It didn't take much to guess what was going on, considering the only thing the first three have in common is that they're living organisms.

It kind of seemed weird to think about, since… how does that affect shadows?

But again, powers are weird.

Sometimes they follow science with their powers and limitations, and sometimes it defies science and logic completely.

So at the end of the fight, thankfully, he managed to find a shadow of a rock near Iris, and used the shade to knock her out.

"Sorry, man," Ren said. "I'll explain why I didn't do that earlier later, okay?"

Anyways, he looked toward Iris and just sighed.

" We finally won…"

But now they were in much bigger trouble.

They just took down the vice leader of Gunshot.

They were most definitely their number one target now.

Kai, seeing this, just laughed.

"Seriously? You're still afraid of Gunshot?"

"I know I made a big deal out of them when we first met, but they are not that threatening."

"We took down their biggest operation… and we took down their vice leader without a problem."

Now that we've done all of that, sooner or later they will collapse if we don't destroy them first," Kai said, chuckling and waving Ren's concerns off.

Ren smiled, kind of agreeing with him… but he was still concerned about the whole situation.

"Look, I know we've had a pretty good success rate against Gunshot, but still… Iris managed to figure out who we are nearly on her own. So now that we're the number one target… Gunshot can track us, find us, know who we are, know who our friends are, where we go to school—everything. So they could easily use our surroundings and the people around us to capture us, or even worse… kill us this time."

Now Kai became serious and stopped joking.

"I guess you have a point," he admitted. "Since we already reached this point… we might as well go all the way and take down Gunshot once and for all."

Ren agreed with the plan, but he still wasn't satisfied.

"But we can't just go back to our normal places. Like I said, they'll figure out who we are eventually, so being in our usual places would be problematic. Even though I'm concerned about our apartments—"

"Don't worry," Kai replied confidently. "Apartment security is pretty heavy on the island. Gunshot will never be able to enter our apartments. Not in a million years."

Ren smiled.

"Then we have to stay outside for a while… but first, let's call the cops and get out of here. Do you want to take the phones, belts, and all of the stuff she threw out, and then call the cops?"

Eventually, the cops arrived at the place and found Iris unconscious.

Later on, in the police station…

Now awake, Iris was in a prison cell wearing a power-dampening collar while two officers were looking over her.

"Iris Smith," one of the cops read out of her file to his partner, the lead officer in her case. "She was found unconscious in the Greenfield training area after multiple reports calling about hearing the sound of gunshots and explosions coming from Greenfield, even though it currently isn't being used for training. Those emergency calls came mostly from civilians and civilian students."

He flipped the page.

"Anyways… the most important part is when they found the girl Iris, she had a gun with her."

The lead officer frowned.

"We need to investigate where that gun came from. This is a serious matter. We need to confirm if this gun truly belongs to her… or if she is being framed."

I don't think we could handle this, sir," his partner said.

The leading officer looked at his partner with a raised eyebrow.

And his partner now that meant explain

She is suspected to be part of Gunshot, and there are other records of past misdeeds that could tie her to them, but there was no official evidence for it. And even though her official records say she doesn't have a power, those records that I just mentioned of past misdeeds hint—or imply for sure—that she does have a power, if any of them are true. And considering she has a gun, the chances of her being innocent are extremely low.

The leading officer took a look at the file and sighed.

"Well… this makes things easier and worse," he said.

Now that she might have a power, this case has to be transferred—

He closed the file.

"To SIED."

Later that night…

Someone was sneaking around in the back alleys. He was covering his face, making sure no one saw him, until he arrived in the middle of an empty alleyway.

Then he clapped his hands twice.

A black rope-like thing fell down next to him. He grabbed it, and it dragged him upward, with him still holding it, all the way to the top of a building.

The guy got up and saw Ren.

"Hey man… did you bring any snacks?"

"Yes," the guy said. "I got them. It wasn't really a problem."

The guy was Kai.

They were camping in the middle of a store rooftop, with two windowless buildings next to them In the store sign in front designed to cover them from the street. And behind the building was another building with no windows facing them.

It was the perfect spot to camp.
