Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: I Believe She Will Come to Terms With It

The Yuuki family, like the Yukinoshita family, was a prestigious, powerful clan.

The difference lay in the fact that the Yukinoshita family was a powerful clan in Chiba Prefecture, while the Yuuki family was a powerful clan in the Tokyo metropolitan area. Furthermore, the former primarily developed in political circles, while the latter was a major player in the business world, a well-known and respected name in the capital sphere.

Yuuki Asuna was the young lady of the Yuuki family. Her father was the CEO of a large electronics manufacturer renowned nationwide and even overseas, and her mother was a university professor. Because of this, she received an elite education from a young age, always attending exclusive private aristocratic schools, and was a prominent young lady lauded as an honor student, just like Yukinoshita Yukino.

The reason she was in Chiba this time was because her elder brother needed to attend a banquet there. Driven by curiosity, she tagged along with him. She originally planned to visit other places while her brother was at the banquet, but unfortunately, she met with misfortune.

Yukinoshita Yukino thought she was attacked on her way home from school. In reality, Yuuki Asuna encountered the attack only after getting lost.

As for the uniform and school bag on her, she had indeed brought them with her. Since she hadn't planned on attending the banquet or staying long, she hadn't prepared an evening dress or casual clothes, opting to simply wear her uniform and carry her school bag.

The distance between Tokyo and Chiba wasn't too great, and Yuuki Asuna had traveled in her family's private car, so she hadn't been overly particular about her attire.

Unfortunately, she never dreamed that a momentary impulse driven by curiosity would lead her to encounter an existence that shattered the worldview she had built over seventeen years of life.

Recalling the previous day's encounter, a trace of fear surfaced on Yuuki Asuna's exquisite face.

Leon noticed this fear, exchanged a glance with Yukinoshita Yukino, and then spoke.

"Do you remember what happened yesterday?"

Leon started with this question.

"Yesterday..." Yuuki Asuna lowered her head, gripping the blanket tightly with both hands. Her inner turmoil was clearly displayed on her face as she hesitantly said, "Yesterday, I accidentally got lost outside and was about to call my family to come and pick me up, but then I encountered a monster."

Yuuki Asuna would probably never forget what her state of mind was like at that time.

That feeling of her worldview shattering, her breathing stopping, and her consciousness going blank due to the intense shock, remained fresh in her memory even now.

The sky hadn't completely darkened yet; it was just early evening, but the street Yuuki Asuna was on was already devoid of pedestrians.

The horrifying creature—shark-like yet not entirely a shark, monstrous yet not entirely a monster—emerged from the shadows on the street corner, laughing maniacally. The sight caused her pupils to tremble violently, and her entire body to shake. She was so stunned that she forgot to run, remaining rooted to the spot.

And so, the monster lunged towards her.

After that, Yuuki Asuna remembered nothing.

She had indeed fainted on the spot and lost consciousness, just as the Stray Devil had mentioned.

In a way, this was quite fortunate; otherwise, she would have had to watch helplessly as her abdomen was raggedly torn apart by the monster's bite, succumbing to death with fear and despair.

"So, you don't remember anything that happened after you lost consciousness?"

Leon confirmed her condition and nodded thoughtfully.

Yukinoshita Yukino, on the other hand, felt a bit envious.

She, too, had faced death, but she hadn't been so lucky. She had watched with her own eyes as her body was pierced, as she collapsed in a pool of blood, ultimately dying with regret.

"What exactly happened after that? Did you save me?" Seeing that neither of the two people in front of her seemed surprised by her account, Yuuki Asuna immediately understood something. She leaned forward slightly and anxiously asked, "What kind of thing was that monster? Why does such a thing exist?"

Yuuki Asuna had been worried that others wouldn't believe her ridiculous encounter, yet she also secretly hoped that it was all just a nightmare and not something that had actually happened.

But seeing Leon and Yukinoshita Yukino's reactions, she vaguely realized that everything was real, and that these two were likely well-informed, completely aware of the existence of such monsters.

Now, Yuuki Asuna just wanted to figure out what she had encountered and what all of this meant.

Leon understood her need and nodded towards Yukinoshita Yukino beside him.

"Actually..."

Yukinoshita Yukino understood, and after carefully choosing her words, she began to explain to Yuuki Asuna.

She told Yuuki Asuna that the world was not as simple as it appeared on the surface. In places unseen by ordinary human society, there were extraordinary races that had flourished since ancient times.

Devils, Angels, Fallen Angels... Yukinoshita Yukino relayed the basic knowledge of the 'Underworld' that she knew to Yuuki Asuna, and also explained the concept of a Stray Devil, letting Yuuki Asuna know exactly what kind of entity had attacked her.

Yuuki Asuna was very reluctant to believe any of this. Her lips were tightly bitten, and her pupils were constantly trembling, yet she couldn't offer any reason for rebuttal.

After all, the experience of the previous night had already told her that the world she lived in was indeed not as simple as it looked on the surface.

"In other words, I was attacked by a legendary Devil, and I was already dead, and you two defeated that Devil and brought me back to life?"

Yuuki Asuna finally managed to temporarily accept this reality. Her gaze toward Leon and Yukinoshita Yukino no longer carried any suspicion.

"Are you Devil Hunters?"

Upon hearing this, not only Leon but also Yukinoshita Yukino's expression turned odd.

Then, Yuuki Asuna heard Leon's laugh.

"Firstly, you were attacked by a Stray Devil, which are dangerous individuals who have abandoned their own kind and can no longer be considered members of the Devil race," Leon looked straight into Yuuki Asuna's beautiful face, and with a playful tone, he said, "Secondly, we are not Devil Hunters; we are the genuine, legendary Devils ourselves."

Yuuki Asuna's face stiffened.

"You... you are Devils?"

She seemed unwilling to believe it.

Seeing this, Leon stood up and, very straightforwardly, displayed the proof of his Devil nature.

"Swoosh!"

A rush of wind arose as six Devil wings suddenly unfurled behind Leon, causing Yuuki Asuna's eyes to widen.

Yukinoshita Yukino, seeing her past self reflected in Yuuki Asuna at this moment, also playfully spread her wings, allowing a pair of wings to unfold.

"Y-You two...?!?"

A look of terror appeared on Yuuki Asuna's face, but immediately afterward, she felt an intense itching on her back.

In the next moment, a pair of Devil wings, dark and profound, abruptly appeared behind her, causing the girl's mind to go "Boom!"—just like the previous night when she encountered the Stray Devil—and turn completely blank.

What is going on?

What on earth is going on?

Why... do I have these wings too?

While Yuuki Asuna's mind was blank and she was completely stunned, Leon's voice slowly rang out.

"Not only are we Devils, but you have also become a Devil."

"I know this is very sudden for you, but there was no choice. At the time, your heart and breathing had completely stopped. From a medical perspective, you were undoubtedly dead; you had even lost your body temperature."

"Fortunately, you are a person with latent potential, so I chose to save you, turning you into my peerage servant and allowing you to be reborn as a Devil."

Naturally, a round of explanations followed, describing Leon's identity and the existence and effect of the Evil Pieces.

"I... I'm a Devil now?"

Yuuki Asuna felt very confused, so muddled that she couldn't organize her thoughts at all.

Yukinoshita Yukino also knew what it felt like to be stripped of one's humanity upon waking up, and her gaze towards Yuuki Asuna became much warmer, mixed with a hint of sympathy.

Becoming a Devil was one thing, but ending up as someone else's peerage, becoming a servant—how could an affluent young lady who had lived a sheltered life accept this?

Let alone a wealthy young lady, even an ordinary person would find it hard to accept the fact that they had become someone else's servant, especially since this wasn't ancient times; the concept of slaves and servants no longer existed.

To be honest, Yukinoshita Yukino herself didn't know how she had managed to convince herself to accept the news when she first heard it. One had to remember that she wasn't a good-tempered person; in fact, her pride was much higher than others, and due to her family background, she was inwardly sensitive. The fact that she could accept this reality without throwing a tantrum was truly a miracle.

Yuuki Asuna also found it hard to accept the situation immediately, but her personality was not as aloof and isolated as Yukinoshita Yukino's. Thus, she eventually took a deep breath and suppressed the chaotic emotions in her heart.

"I'm sorry, I still can't accept this kind of thing," Yuuki Asuna said, her face somewhat pale, speaking in a low voice, "Could you give me some time to be alone and quiet for a while?"

Hearing this, Leon smiled and, along with Yukinoshita Yukino, retracted the wings behind them.

"Of course. You should rest well first. Come out and find us when you feel okay," Leon said casually, "I will leave a familiar—a maid—outside the door. You can call her if you need anything."

With that, Leon and Yukinoshita Yukino left the room.

Yuuki Asuna remained in the now quiet room. After a long while, she looked at the wings behind her and started to worry.

"How... how do I put this away?"

Meanwhile, Leon and Yukinoshita Yukino, who had stepped out of the room, were talking.

"Do you think she can accept it?" Yukinoshita Yukino asked vaguely, "Will she leave and become a Stray because she can't accept it?"

"Who knows?" Leon walked ahead, looking forward, and smiled, "However, I believe she will come to terms with it."

After all, she was also an existence that could be called a heroine...
