Chapter 73 - Chapter 74

"I think that's likely the case. Now tell me—what exactly happened?"

Lu Yi was in a good mood and didn't want to make things difficult for Hawkeye. He glanced at the tense-looking archer and steered the conversation back on track.

Even when faced with a breakdown, Hawkeye could stay calm—but that calmness had limits. It worked fine on ordinary people and ordinary problems.

But when the target was Lu Yi… that calm meant nothing at all.

Standing before someone far stronger—so strong it inspired despair—Hawkeye's composure was useless, if not meaningless.

He never relaxed around Lu Yi. His body was always on edge. Every now and then he would touch his bow, because it was the only thing that gave him even a sliver of courage—courage to remain steady in front of Lu Yi.

Hawkeye touched his bow again, took a deep breath, and said, "Here's the situation. Not long ago, the World Security Council issued an ultimatum against you!"

"So that's how it is… They think I'm too much trouble and have figured out a way to deal with me?"

"That's not it. They actually realized the previous ultimatum was inappropriate—they've already retracted it. They wanted us to deliver a sincere apology on their behalf."

"Are you sure you didn't mix up any part of that?" Lu Yi was caught off guard.

Had those people finally come to their senses?

"I'm afraid not. It's all true. The director told me this personally and asked me to relay it to you."

To be honest, even Hawkeye barely believed it, but those were Fury's exact words. He repeated them without changing a single syllable.

"All right… I have to admit, I underestimated them. So they want me to lower my guard? Or is it that they truly have no way to handle me and don't dare confront me?"

Lu Yi leaned strongly toward the first possibility.

Not just Lu Yi—Hawkeye also believed the first explanation. But that thought would forever remain in his head; it was impossible for him to say it aloud.

He worked for SHIELD and the World Security Council, not for Lu Yi. He had to uphold their interests.

"I think it might be the second one. You're… exceptionally difficult to deal with."

"Maybe. But I still lean toward the first. Go back and tell them: no matter what tricks they pull, I'll walk through every step with them. If that's really their plan, fine. If not, I don't care either way."

"I'll repeat your words exactly."

Lu Yi nodded quietly. "Don't trouble two people with one errand. I'm heading home soon, and things might get a bit bumpy along the way. You'd better notify the Air Force. If anything happens, don't blame me."

Having said that, Lu Yi leapt into the air and flew toward home. In an instant he broke the sound barrier, accelerating to twenty-five times the speed of sound.

Watching Lu Yi vanish in a flash, Hawkeye immediately understood what would happen next. He quickly contacted Nick Fury to report the situation.

Fury didn't waste a second. He immediately reached out to the Air Force and explained everything.

If the Air Force treated Lu Yi as an enemy, things would get… interesting. Fury definitely didn't want to hear news the next morning about fighter jets being blown out of the sky.

Fortunately, Fury arrived before the fighter jets even took off. And that was the end of it.

Nothing happened.

Fury's authority still carried weight. With just a few words, the issue was resolved. Since no planes launched, there was nothing else to worry about.

Lu Yi returned home safely and continued his work. Fury, after supervising the creation of the magical furnace, went back to handling his daily pile of problems.

The world appeared peaceful again—calm and quiet.

But that peace was only superficial. Beneath the surface, turmoil still stirred.

Tony Stark's declaration that he was Iron Man had opened the plotline of the Marvel Universe, and according to every fantasy theory, it heralded a brilliant new era.

Superheroes began appearing one after another. Various superhuman abilities sprang up like mushrooms after rain.

On the surface, the world remained harmonious. In truth, chaos had already spread—and nowhere was it worse than in the United States.

For reasons unknown, superpowers, conspiracies, and upheavals all unfolded in America, while other countries looked almost idyllic in comparison. It was as if the tone of the world changed the moment Lu Yi arrived in the U.S.—probably one of the reasons SHIELD's headquarters was located there.

But precisely because of this, Nick Fury was constantly distressed. He had too many crises to handle, too many schemes to counter.

And now he was busy again.

"What's the latest?" Fury suddenly received a call from Coulson and Natasha. He immediately set aside his work and asked sternly.

"We've located the target, and his whereabouts have been confirmed!"

"Excellent!" Fury finally let out a breath of relief. He had been worrying about this case for days. Now he could relax—at least a little.

"If possible, capture him. If not—kill him. He's far too dangerous. We can't let him remain free."

"But Director, there's a problem. The ability he acquired is too unusual. Our current magical gear can injure him, but it can't restrain him. If he truly chooses to run, we won't be able to stop him!"

"I know. But you're the only ones who can hurt him. Do everything you can—capture him or kill him. You have to succeed."

"Yes, sir."

Coulson's helpless voice came through the line.

Orders from the boss meant running all over the place.

As agents, for the sake of salary, bonuses, and world peace—they had to fight.

"When you execute the mission, pay attention to that man's subordinates as well. I have a feeling there's something very wrong with them."

"Understood, Director."
