Soon, Liam, Gary's second opponent, also completed the task of receiving his Starter Pokemon.

Mainly, there were no other options left; only Squirtle remained. It was a take-it-or-leave-it situation; otherwise, he'd have to start his journey empty-handed.

Fortunately, for a beginner like Leaf, the adorable Squirtle was perfectly fine. He didn't see anything wrong with it and happily accepted.

Seeing Liam come downstairs, Gary showed a slight smile: "Battle, you oil boy! (Let's battle!)"

"Alright, as a Pokemon Trainer, I will not shy away from a challenge." Leaf had already found out that Gary chose Charmander.

Facing the number one genius of Pallet Town, Liam was eager to try. Water-type against Fire-type, even a beginner like him knew the advantage was his!

The two once again arrived at the open space in the backyard.

"Go, Squirtle!" Liam impatiently brought out his water-spraying turtle.

"Squirtle, Squirtle!" A very lively, Round-headed Squirtle appeared, patting his little head and curiously looking around.

"Well then, I won't hold back."

Gary took out a poké ball and threw it: "Charmander, get ready to battle!"

"Roar!" Unlike Squirtle, who was looking around, Charmander, who had already fought one battle, immediately Lock-On his opponent upon entering.

"Squirtle, strike first! Use Bubble Attack!" Liam knew a little, but it was clear Squirtle wasn't very cooperative.

"Squirtle~" The Round-headed one turned his head proudly, directly ignoring his Trainer's command.

"Eh?! How could this be!" Liam scratched his head anxiously.

"That shouldn't be right" Gary also frowned. Logically, even a relatively excellent Starter Pokemon wouldn't ignore its Trainer. This Squirtle's aptitude must be quite outstanding

Professor Oak, standing by the window, shook his head. How could it not be outstanding? He specifically picked it for this kid, a high-quality Pokemon from the Indigo Plateau's original breeding house.

It's worth noting that in Professor Oak's judgment, this Squirtle could probably only be commanded by Gary. After all, he knew a bit about his own grandson; he couldn't be viewed by beginner standards...

Who would have thought Gary wouldn't follow the usual routine, and as a result, this Squirtle ended up with Leaf.

"Forget it, thinking too much is useless. Charmander, use Smokescreen!" Gary shook his head and directly launched an attack.

"Roar!!" Charmander opened his small mouth, and a cloud of black smoke directly enveloped Squirtle.

"Squirtle?" Squirtle instantly retracted into his shell, staying put.

"Quick reaction, but it's useless." Gary shook his head: "Charmander, use Growl!"

Charmander nodded and let out a series of Growl into the Smokescreen.

Squirtle immediately glowed blue all over, and his attack power began to decrease.

"Darn it, I can't just sit here! Squirtle, come on, use Water Gun!!" Liam shouted anxiously.

"Squirtle!" Squirtle directly jumped out of the black fog, but he used Tackle!

"Excellent! Charmander, use Scratch!" Gary wasn't afraid to meet him head-on.

With your attack power already lowered, how can you fight me!

Thwack! The two small Pokemon clashed head-on. The Round-headed Squirtle's head hurt, and he was directly knocked to the ground by Charmander's Scratch.

A turtle-type Pokemon, knocked to the ground... The four-legged Squirtle flailed his limbs wildly, then simply lay flat.

He couldn't get up, simply couldn't get up... "The outcome is decided. Come back, Charmander." It was just a spar, so Gary didn't hit too hard.

Looking at the upturned Squirtle on the ground, Charmander poked him, still not fully satisfied, then wagged his tail and returned to Gary's side.

"Well done." Gary also stroked Charmander's head in encouragement.

"This... I lost." Liam helped Squirtle up, also bowing his head in dejection to admit defeat.

"Leaf, don't be discouraged. You just haven't earned Squirtle's approval yet. I feel like he'll be very strong. Keep it up." Gary blinked.

Liam nodded: "Yes, thank you, Gary. I will work hard. See you at the Indigo League!"

Recalling Squirtle, Liam also said goodbye and left.

Watching his retreating figure, Gary shook his head, hoping he could really make it into the Indigo League.

After all, in his previous life, the results of the four kids from Pallet Town weren't very good.

Gary reached the top 32, Ash reached the top 16, and the other two didn't even make it into the Indigo League.

With such results, they had no face left... He checked the mission progress; it was 2/3 complete. So, only one person was left... He brewed a cup of coffee for Professor Oak, and Gary brewed himself a cup of black tea, sitting by the window, beginning to wait...

Hoo... hoo... It wasn't until late morning that Gary couldn't help but feel drowsy.

Finally, there was an urgent knocking sound outside the door.

"I'm sorry!!! I'm late!!" Ash's full-bodied yet somewhat straightforward voice rang out from outside the door.

Gary jumped up with a start: "You're finally here!"

Adjusting his hairstyle, Gary opened the door and leaned leisurely against the door frame: "Yo Isn't this the slowpoke Ash You sure came early~"

Ash immediately bristled upon seeing Gary: "Gary, you, you're waiting here just to mock me?"

Pushing away Ash's approaching face, Gary curled his lips in disdain: "On such an important day, you managed to be five hours late. That's quite explosive. Also, you should call me Gary, got it?"

Ash, surprisingly obedient, scratched his head: "Gary, where's my Pokemon?"

"Your Pokemon?" Gary shook his head, speechless: "Go find my grandpa yourself."

"Oh, right!" Ash finally realized, and with a burst of speed, he rushed into the Research Institute.

Just then, Professor Oak walked out of the laboratory and collided with Ash.

"Oh~ Isn't this Ash?" Professor Oak feigned surprise.

"I'm sorry, I'm late, Professor Oak. Where's my Pokemon?" Ash pitifully held out his hands to Professor Oak.

"Your Pokemon?" Professor Oak was so amused he almost laughed. If it weren't for the special Pikachu prepared for him, with Ash's punctuality, he'd miss out on everything...

"That's right, my Pokemon!" Ash was still fantasizing about the Starter Pokemon. After all, he had dreamed of playing with the Starter Pokemon all night.

"Alright, come with me." Looking at the naturally clumsy Ash, Professor Oak lost his temper.

Gary, however, followed with interest, wanting to see how Professor Oak would tease Ash.

Arriving on the second floor, Professor Oak didn't directly bring out Pikachu. Instead, he opened the glass cover of the poké ball display stand: "Choose, child."

Ash rubbed his hands: "Great! I thought about it all night, and I've finally decided~ It's you, Charmander!"

Click~ He opened an empty poké ball~

Ash looked at Professor Oak, bewildered.

Professor Oak shrugged: "That one was already taken by the first person."

"Alright, if that's the case, I can accept Squirtle too!" Ash wasn't discouraged and reached for the second poké ball.

Bang! Another empty one. Surprised? Unexpected?

Professor Oak spread his hands: "That one was also taken by the child who arrived on time."

Ash sighed again: "Alright, I was late. In that case, Bulbasaur, you'll be my Starter Pokemon."

"Pfft!" Gary couldn't help but burst out laughing. Ash looked at the empty poké ball in his hand, his eyes losing their sparkle... Professor Oak coughed twice: "Ahem, child, you must understand that whether it's receiving a Pokemon or life, it's like riding a bus: one step late, always late... This one was also taken by the child who arrived before you..."

Ash stiffened all over and fell in front of Gary: "Waaah... How could this happen..."

"Hehe... Get up, hehe. Don't try to fake an injury, alright?" Gary teased with a smile.

"Gary, I'm going to have to set off empty-handed..." Ash said pitifully.

Seeing that Ash had learned his lesson, Gary finally looked at Professor Oak: "Grandpa, can you help him out?"

Professor Oak raised an eyebrow: "Hmm... I do actually have one more, but... there's a slight problem..."

As soon as Ash heard he wouldn't have to Tackle Pokemon bare-handed, he sprang up like a flopping fish!

"I want that one!!"
