The Vermilion Gym battle had reached its final round for Gary.

Looking at Lt. Surge's murderous gaze, Gary felt a little nervous: "Uh, well, Psyduck, you'd better deal with your opponent, or if you get electro-fried later, I'll give you a grand funeral..."

Psyduck rolled his eyes at Gary and shrugged: "Relax, my Trainer, although I'm a Water-type, I still have other ways to fight. Just watch."

Lt. Surge couldn't wait any longer. Pixie waved her right hand, and the battle began.

"Voltorb, use Thunderbolt and turn it into a roasted duck for me!" Lt. Surge was completely mad.

"Jilililili!" Voltorb bared his large front teeth, his body flickering with electricity.

Boom! A thick bolt of lightning struck directly at Psyduck's head.

Gary's mouth twitched with a hint of worry, and his hand quietly rested on Rhydon's poké ball, ready to save this overly boastful duck if necessary.

After all, trash-talking is fun for a moment, but roasted duck needs green onions, pancakes, and sweet bean sauce... Gary hadn't brought any of it!

"Small-time stuff, don't worry." Psyduck lightly waved his hand, and a blue energy shield, like an eggshell, enveloped him. The Thunderbolt's current instantly dissipated, and Psyduck remained unmoved.

"Impossible!" Lt. Surge's mouth hung open in surprise. His Voltorb had just been recharged yesterday, and the power of that Thunderbolt would make even the Nidoking from the first match howl in pain.

Gary was equally surprised. If he wasn't mistaken, wasn't that a Psychic force field?

Strictly speaking, this move wasn't even a skill; it was just a profound application of Psychic ability.

The key was that even an Alakazam might not be able to learn this technique, so how could a silly-looking duck do it?

For some reason, Gary thought of Psyduck's previous explanation.

The Psyduck Family is born with extremely strong mental power, and it's because these powerful mental energies rush around in their heads that Psyduck often get headaches.

Also, because they need a lot of processing power to sort out the mental energy in their minds, they appear to be dazed... Most Psyduck eventually give up a portion of their mental power before evolving. This allows them to clear their minds and evolve smoothly.

The cost is that their originally exaggerated mental power returns to a relatively normal level.

Unlike other Psyduck, Gary's Psyduck was born with Slowking-level intelligence, so he could completely sort out the mental energy in his mind even at the Psyduck stage.

"Let me show you the hidden potential of the Psyduck Family." Psyduck crossed his arms over his chest, his eyes glowing brighter and brighter with blue light.

"I don't believe it! Voltorb, use Supersonic to interfere with the opponent!" Lt. Surge finally remembered that today he wanted to spar with Gary on tactics.

However, things were no longer under Gary's control; Psyduck was now in charge!

"Jijijijijilililili~" Voltorb opened his mouth, and a harsh sound wave enveloped Gary's side.

Psyduck impatiently pointed with one hand: "Shut up, that's too annoying~"

Buzz, blue mental energy lit up on Voltorb's body, and Voltorb immediately closed his mouth, looking aggrieved.

"What are you doing, Voltorb, continue!" Lt. Surge said anxiously.

"I think that was probably Petrification just now," Gary explained with a wry smile.

"Eh? Damn it! In that case, Voltorb, use Rollout!" Lt. Surge was desperate.

Voltorb faithfully executed the command, immediately transforming into a rapidly rolling red and white ball, crashing towards Psyduck.

Psyduck remained motionless, his eyes blazing with blue light, and more mental power surged forth.

Buzz~ Voltorb hadn't even gotten close before he was stopped in front of Psyduck by an invisible Confusion.

Psyduck even had time to wave at Gary and show off a bit.

A large 'well' symbol appeared on Lt. Surge's forehead, and his face turned red with anger: "Damn duck, you're going too far. Voltorb, use Self-Destruct!"

Gary was suddenly startled; Lt. Surge was going all out...

"Lilililili!" Voltorb immediately began to charge up, his entire body shimmering with white light—this was the prelude to an explosion.

Psyduck shook his head: Why bother~

Then, Gary saw Psyduck clap his hands together, and Voltorb immediately stopped the Self-Destruct and fainted on the spot.

Pixie walked over to check and shook her head: "He's asleep~"

"Hypnosis? Can it be used like that?" Gary asked curiously.

Psyduck, looking calm and composed, wiggled his butt as he returned to Gary's side: "Clap your hands, and whatever you want comes. Is Hypnosis that hard?"

Gary: (¬_¬) You're sure you won't develop some strange Grass-type moves someday, right~?

"Of course, I don't really like Grass-type," Psyduck pouted.

Pixie returned to the referee's stand and extended her right hand to announce: "Due to Voltorb losing the will to fight, the winner of this match is Gary from Pallet Town!"

Gary recalled the still-boasting Psyduck and nodded apologetically to Lt. Surge.

Lt. Surge sighed, then took the Orange badge from Pixie's hand and walked towards Gary.

"Uh~ The process was a bit chaotic, but I think I should have passed the Gym battle, right?" Gary asked tentatively.

Lt. Surge didn't say anything, just stared at Gary.

It wasn't until Gary was about to make a quick exit and come back for the badge later that Lt. Surge finally couldn't hold back and burst out laughing.

"Hahahaha~ A hero in his youth! It's been a long time since I've been beaten so badly, Gary! You're a real man, and battling you was truly exhilarating!" Lt. Surge clapped Gary on the shoulder, satisfied.

Gary asked curiously: "I thought... you'd be disappointed that I didn't prepare any special tactics."

Lt. Surge waved his hand: "Save your tactics for others to enjoy. I still prefer head-on confrontation! But next time we battle, I won't bring a team of this caliber!"

Gary smiled: "Of course, I'll bring an even stronger lineup too!"

"Here, this is the Orange badge; it's yours. Win the Indigo League early and go torment Bruno and the others. I'm rooting for you." Handing the Orange badge to Gary, Lt. Surge said cheerfully.

"I definitely will." Gary took the Orange badge and nodded solemnly.

Pixie said admiringly from the side: "This is the first time I've seen such a fierce challenger. I think I'll continue training my Pikachu with the goal of battling you."

Gary thought of future events and nodded solemnly: "Pixie, right? I hope we can have a formal match at the Vermilion Gym in the future. But before that, the stronger you get, the better!"

Pixie nodded enthusiastically: "Of course! Before I defeat you and avenge my master, I'll tear apart all other opponents!"

Lt. Surge shook his head with a wry smile: "Hey! Private Pixie, I'm not old yet; I don't need you to avenge me!"

And so, Gary, having earned Lt. Surge's respect, happily left the Vermilion Gym.

It was already very late. Gary decided to stay another night at the Pokémon Center and leave Vermilion City tomorrow.
