Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: The Escaping Dwarf

"White Hawk, attack him!"

Ethan immediately gave the white hawk a command.

Because the Eagle-Eye ability was active, their minds were connected at that moment.

The white hawk received Ethan's order, gave an excited screech, and dove straight toward the dwarf.

The dwarf, who had been standing atop the small black hill tinkering with some delicate little gadget, suddenly looked up at the sound from the air. His ugly, wrinkled old face instantly turned pale.

"AHHH!"

The dwarf hurriedly threw away what he was holding and started fleeing into the forest.

The dwarf was fast.

The white hawk's first dive missed completely.

It circled in midair and continued to chase relentlessly.

But the dwarf seemed to have some special skill, not only running ridiculously fast, but also digging tunnels at high speed.

By the time the white hawk dove again, the dwarf had already dug open a passage and vanished without a trace.

"Stop chasing! White Hawk, come back!", Ethan gave the order.

The white hawk circled in the air reluctantly, then flew back in Ethan's direction.

And sure enough, once the dwarf disappeared, the prompts in Ethan's vision changed.

From the previous—

[Danger! 87 meters ahead, unpredictable threat detected, please detour!]

Into—

[87 meters ahead, there is a magnetic ore hill. Can be mined. A dwarf's satchel has been left behind atop the magnetic hill. Don't you want to see what's inside?]

"Hmm?"

"Not only has the danger gone, there is even a dwarf's bag? Interesting!"

Ethan quickly walked toward the magnetic ore hill.

Near the hill, perhaps due to the magnetic field, the mist was thinner than elsewhere. But around the edges of the hill, the fog had formed a circular wall, like a misty barrier, creating a very strange shape.

As Ethan stepped through the fog wall, he suddenly felt as though he had "parted the clouds to see the sky."

Though what lay before him wasn't blue sky, but a dark, black hill.

Ethan walked up to it.

[Magnetite discovered. Mine it?]

He received the prompt again, but Ethan didn't rush to mine. Instead, he first picked up the dwarf's abandoned satchel.

Inside, there was a jingle and a clatter, it seemed to hold quite a lot.

When he opened it, countless items tumbled out.

Ethan simply waved his hand and collected them all, planning to sort them out later once he got home.

[Magnetite +100]

[Earth-type Beast Core +2]

[Metal-type Beast Core +1]

[Painkiller Fruit +100]

[Wound-Healing Herb +50]

[Scar-Removing Flower +50]

[Burn Salve Recipe +1]

[System Prompt: Dwarf Satchel (Durability 1/100) can be dismantled into 2 Beast Hides. Dismantle?]

Almost broken, but it could still hold for now.

He'd carry the items back first.

"Still… this dwarf really had some good stuff. No wonder they are called treasure collectors."

Ethan was delighted. The other items were fine, but that recipe and those beast cores, those were valuable.

He glanced at the time. Less than 45 minutes left before the acid rain arrived.

He didn't dare stay outside any longer.

He'd study the materials back home.

Ethan quickly started running toward his cabin.

.

.

.

Fortunately, he had a torch.

The trip that normally would have taken nearly an hour was much faster under the torchlight. Before long, he reached the area near his wooden hut.

A glance at the system clock, about 10 minutes remaining.

He looked toward the grassland and saw a system prompt: the animal trap had caught something.

If he didn't go collect it now, the acid rain might kill the prey, or even corrode the trap.

Thinking of that, Ethan decided to take the risk and dash into the grassland.

With the system's guidance, he wasn't afraid of getting lost, and the trap wasn't too far away anyway.

"To hell with it!"

He gritted his teeth and jogged through the grassland.

Soon, Ethan arrived at the trap. The system prompt changed again—

[Within 10 meters ahead, there's a fine-quality beast trap containing several small animals. A great harvest.]

[Chickens and rabbits share one cage, totaling ten feet. The number of animals is odd. How many chickens and how many rabbits?]

"Damn!"

"A logic puzzle now?"

"But okay, ten feet, odd number of animals… That's two rabbits and one chicken!"

Ethan walked up to the trap, and sure enough, there were three silly little animals inside. The bait had been completely eaten, three baits, three captures.

Not bad for a catch.

Too bad he hadn't had time to replace the bait in the afternoon, or he could've caught more.

BOOM!

A thunderclap echoed above.

Ethan looked up and saw that the thick mist had been scattered quite a bit, but the entire sky had turned a deep purple-red.

"Shit!"

"The acid rain is coming!"

Ethan grabbed the trap and ran.

But he was too late.

Halfway back, the sky split open with a loud crash, and rain started pouring down.

Wherever the drops hit the ground, the grass began to hiss and smoke. Ethan felt his arms sting painfully with every drop that hit him.

"Damn it! What is this, concentrated sulfuric acid?"

He quickly pulled two beast hides from his storage, one to cover his head, the other to shield the trap.

The little animals inside the trap, who had been squealing as the acid rain fell on them, quieted down a bit. Ethan quickened his pace toward the hut.

But as the rain grew heavier, he couldn't avoid getting splashed in several places.

By the time he reached the cabin, he could already see white smoke rising from the roof. The wooden boards were corroding.

That showed just how deadly this acid rain was.

"Damn! Damn! Damn!"

"It burns! Damn it!"

Ethan rushed inside and immediately threw down the beast hides and the trap.

His skin, wherever it had been touched by the rain, was already red and burning.

He knew clearly. If he didn't treat it quickly, he'd probably shed a whole layer of skin.

Ethan grabbed a half-barrel of unfiltered water and poured it over himself.

After a good rinse, the pain eased slightly.

At least the stinging had subsided, though the burned skin was still swollen and wouldn't recover quickly.

He remembered, the dwarf's satchel had contained a burn medicine recipe, hadn't it?

Ethan opened his storage.

[Burn Salve Recipe, Learn?]

[Learn!]

[Recipe learned! You have gained the title: Street Doctor!]

[Burn Salve: A premium medicine that quickly relieves pain, reduces inflammation, and heals burns from acid rain or fire. (Required materials: Painkiller Fruit 100/2, Wound-Healing Herb 50/1, Scar-Removing Flower 50/1, Bamboo 19/0.1)]

Not only did he get the recipe, the materials were already complete too.

"It seems that dwarf was out gathering herbs specifically."

Ethan didn't know where it had found them, but… All fifty portions of medicine had ended up in his hands, free of charge.
