Maybe I should start shutting up.
The thought crept in as the car hummed along the road, the scenery blurring past the window in streaks of green and gold. Trees flashed by in soft waves, sunlight catching on leaves. Maybe I talked too much. Maybe I should have learned by now to keep my mouth closed, to stop asking questions, to stop inviting chaos into my life with careless words.
Because if I had never brought up the alphas, I wouldn't be sitting in a car right now with Jamie and Soren on our way to meet them.
I had done this to myself. No one had forced me. No one had dragged me into this car against my will. I had opened my mouth, and now I was paying the price.
I hadn't even thought it was necessary.
We had literally been talking about something random—something about weekend plans or a new restaurant or the way the weather had finally cooled enough to walk outside without melting—when I asked, "All three of them are together, right?"
