Chapter 455 - Red Corsairs’ Path to Ruin

Following his extended council with Roboute Guilliman, Jaghatai Khan departed Terra, his mind occupied by a myriad of complex considerations for the future of his sons.

Aided by several capital ships provisioned directly by the Lord Regent, the Khan steered a direct course through Segmentum Ultima toward Chogoris, the cradle of his Legion.

Simultaneously, the vast automated sub-fleets under Axion's command remained heavily deployed across the stars, reinforcing Imperial battle groups within the galaxy's most volatile war zones.

Along the border separating the Imperium Sanctus from the Dark Imperium, the Necron civil war had escalated into a state of total, unbridled savagery. Both Imotekh the Stormlord and Szarekh the Silent King understood with absolute clarity that their bitter conflict had reached its definitive crucible. The defeated faction would not merely be stripped of all historical dynastic honors; they faced the grim prospect of being banished to the Bone Kingdom of Drazak within the Ghoul Stars, doomed to rot as desecrated monstrosities feeding the maddening vector of the Flayer Virus.

The Titan's Spear remained stationed in these contested systems, spearheading several standard naval task forces alongside the Battlefleets of the Imperial Navy. Elsewhere, additional autonomous squadrons maintained strict orbital patrols over high-risk sectors designated by the Adeptus Terra. The Heart of the Forge led a massive swarm of mechanical assets along the outer fringes of Imperial space, repeatedly engaging the vanguard elements of Hive Fleet tendrils and utilizing the salvaged detritus to slowly but relentlessly manufacture replacement automated hulls. Meanwhile, the Void Sword hunted across the galaxy, leading a specialized flotilla of heavily retrofitted warships tasked with purging daemonic incursions wherever reality wore thin.

As the transition from the void concluded, Jaghatai Khan stood before the viewport of his flagship, watching the boundless, windswept steppes of Chogoris fill his field of vision. The familiar, wild scent of his home world seemed to call to him across the thin atmosphere.

The battle-brothers of the White Scars Chapter had already been apprised of their gene-sire's miraculous return. Scores of spaceborne companies had gathered in the planetary anchorage, waiting with bated breath for the historic reunion with their genetic father.

Down upon the endless plains, the mortal tribesmen of the steppes were celebrating with unbridled fervor. Great bonfires were lit between rows of temporary encampments, their smoke rising high into the Chogorisan sky.

As the Stormbirds and sub-squadrons of Thunderhawks touched down upon the packed earth, the Khan strode majestically down the assault ramps, with the ancient veterans of his Keshig forming a grim vanguard behind him.

Before the modern White Scars stood a gathering of legendary transhuman warriors whose deeds had passed into the realm of ancient myth. Yet it was the towering figure at the head of the procession whose identity remained beyond any shadow of misgiving. His noble, apex demeanor commanded absolute reverence, separating him instantly from all others.

"Great Khan!"

As one, every son of Chogoris prostrated himself before the living demigod.

Jaghatai looked upon the assembled ranks of his modern descendants, a deeply gratified smile touching his features. As he surveyed the landscape and the martial posture of his warriors, a specific thought crossed his mind.

"Though I have been lost within the labyrinth of the webway for ten millennia, you have kept the name of Jaghatai untarnished. You have stood unyielding in defense of the Emperor's domain. I am deeply proud of you all!"

The ultimate validation from their Primarch sent a roar of ecstatic jubilation through the ranks of the Chapter.

Amidst the roaring cheers, Jaghatai laughed aloud, his voice cutting through the wind. "I am aware that you have adopted new organizational doctrines at the behest of my brother Guilliman. Tell me, which of my sons currently holds the mantle of Chapter Master? Regardless of his lineage, he is well deserving of my personal commendation!"

Yet, the moment the Khan spoke those words, an unsettling, sudden silence descended over the gathering.

The crowd parted as a Stormseer stepped forward, clad in deep-blue power armor and grasping a crackling force staff. Walking beside him was Ogholei, the Chief Apothecary of the Chapter. The Chief Apothecary's features were drawn into a dark, solemn mask, as though he carried the weight of an insurmountable crisis upon his shoulders.

Jaghatai stepped forward, placing a massive hand upon the Apothecary's pauldron before pulling the warrior into a powerful embrace.

"Whatever tribulation vexes your spirit, my son, you shall share it with me."

Buoyed by the undeniable warmth of his Primarch's presence, the deep exhaustion etched into Ogholei's face seemed to yield slightly.

The Stormseer offered a deep, respectful bow. "It is the highest honor to gaze upon your countenance once more, Great Khan. However... the condition of Great Khan Jubal is... complex."

Releasing his hold on Ogholei, Jaghatai instantly registered the sharp shift in the emotional currents around him. "What has occurred, my children?"

The Stormseer simply pointed toward a secure facility situated further down the ridge.

Jaghatai turned back and caught the eye of his ancient Keshig veterans. The veteran warriors understood their gene-sire's unspoken intent instantly. Clad in ancient suits of Mark III and Mark IV power armor, the Horus Heresy-era White Scars stepped into the crowd, initiating boisterous, warm greetings with their modern brothers. The ancient legionaries could scarcely contain their exhilaration at breathing the air of Chogoris once more.

The traditional tribal feast was permitted to resume. Veterans unclasped their heavy wargear, contesting with the younger battle-brothers over skin-flasks of fermented mare's milk, dissolving any division between them. Before long, the modern space marines sat rapt around the fires, absorbing invaluable strategic wisdom from the lips of elders who had fought across the battlefields of the Great Crusade.

Meanwhile, Jaghatai mounted a heavy Chogorisan combat bike, flanked by a small vanguard of his Keshig. With the Stormseer and Apothecary Ogholei leading the way, they tore across the steppes toward the ancient fortress of Quan Zhou.

They rapidly penetrated the fortress perimeter, passing through a tight security cordon manned by elite palace guards before arriving at a highly secured, sterile chamber.

The architecture of this room was entirely foreign to the rustic, aesthetic style of Chogoris. The oppressive hum of advanced mechanicus technology filled the space. Within the center of the chamber, a broken, horribly mutilated transhuman torso hung suspended inside a specialized stasis-straitjacket, surrounded by a labyrinth of gleaming stabilization clamps and the rhythmic hissing of automated intravenous fluid pumps.

Ogholei moved with practiced efficiency, keying a sequence into the console. A cocktail of advanced chemical stimulants was instantly flooded into the life-support capsule, stabilizing the broken warrior within.

A vox-pickup mounted to the wall chimed to life, its internal speaker rattling.

"Ogholei... how long have I been asleep? Has the Khan truly returned?"

Perhaps the occupant's remaining optical sensors had caught the towering, unmistakable silhouette of the demigod. The vox-caster emitted a ragged, profoundly emotional gasp.

"My Khan!"

Ogholei turned to Jaghatai, his eyes clouded with sorrow. "Great Khan, before you hangs our current Chapter Master, Jubal Khan. The generic medical resources of the Imperium lack the capacity to repair the damage inflicted upon him. I have exhausted every methodology simply to preserve his cognitive faculties. Yet his physical degradation continues to advance. The windows of lucidity I can afford him are growing terrifyingly brief."

The Apothecary hesitated before continuing. "Perhaps the legendary Panacea could restore him, but we have no guarantee the Iron Men would part with it. It is whispered that the Lord of Drakes personally secured a dose of that ancient super-serum from them to eradicate his Chapter's genetic flaws."

"Jubal, my son."

Jaghatai Khan's voice was a low, resonant baritone, blending the tender care of a father with the absolute, crushing authority of a Primarch. The sound echoed softly against the metallic walls of the chamber. He stepped closer to the capsule, his dark eyes filled with profound heartache.

With an immense, visible struggle, Jubal raised his head. His scarred, reconstructed features twitched with a mixture of shock and raw emotion, an expression so strained it verged on a grotesque snarl.

"My Khan... You have truly returned to us."

Jaghatai raised a hand with gentle reassurance, cutting off any attempt at formal protocol. "Save your strength, Jubal. Tell me what transpired."

Jubal drew a ragged breath through his vocal cords, forcing out the words. "We were ambushed by the Red Corsairs. Following the destruction of the Seethnar, our forces were scattered and broken. Those wretched turncoats slaughtered many of our brothers, and the Chapter's historical armory has suffered catastrophic losses. Yet our brothers did not break. We held the line." His voice rasped like iron over stone, yet its martial determination remained unyielding.

Jaghatai nodded slowly, a fierce pride burning in his eyes. "I know your spirit would never yield to such filth. The honor of the White Scars is branded into the very soul of every warrior who wears the lightning bolt."

"Though I am bound to this iron cage," Jubal continued weakly, "I have watched the battlefields through the eyes of our scouts. I have strained to direct our campaigns, but the challenges mounting against the Chapter are staggering." A flicker of genuine sorrow crossed his ruined face.

"You have executed your duties flawlessly, Jubal," the Primarch affirmed, his tone absolute. "Your unyielding resilience and strategic clarity have kept this Chapter alive in the dark. But your watch is temporarily relieved, my son. Rest now. I shall move stars if I must to ensure your restoration."

Jubal's chest heaved erratically within the apparatus. "My Khan... I fear time is a luxury my flesh cannot afford. Our armories are depleted, and our brothers desperately require reinforcement and forge-upgrades."

The Primarch slowly stroked his beard, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "Trust in me, boy."

A complex wave of emotion flooded Jubal's mind; he had never imagined that as a veteran executioner of the Adeptus Astartes, he could feel a vulnerability so akin to a child seeking shelter.

Jaghatai gently placed his massive, golden hand upon the frame of the capsule nearest Jubal's shoulder. Though the touch was remarkably light, the absolute, anchoring power flowing through the Primarch caused the dying Chapter Master's breathing to steady.

"We are the White Scars. We have ridden through the teeth of a thousand storms, and no adversary in this galaxy possesses the strength to break us. Focus your will on survival. The future of our Legion still requires your blade."

Jubal managed a faint, fading response. "I shall endure, my Khan. So long as my twin hearts draw breath, I shall not falter."

The Khan smiled, a fierce, predatory expression of pride. "I know you won't. When you are restored to health, we shall mount our iron steeds together. We shall ride at the head of the horde and show these traitors the true, unfettered fury of the White Scars."

The moment Jaghatai Khan stepped beyond the threshold of the medical vault, the warmth vanished from his face, replaced by a visage as cold and unyielding as winter ice.

The eagles of the Chogorisan steppes were born to die in the glory of open combat; they were never meant to be tortured and humiliated in the dark. The Red Corsairs had sealed their fate.
