Chapter 456 - A Most Elementary Application

Jaghatai Khan stepped out of the inner chambers, walking across the wind-scoured soil of his home world with his Keshig vanguard following closely in his shadow.

"Baatar."

"My Khan," replied a transhuman warrior, stepping forward from the ranks of the bodyguard, his frame noticeably more massive and heavily armored than the others.

"Go and assemble every Khagan currently present upon Chogoris. Furthermore, notify the current Master of the Order of the Stormspeakers to present himself before me. I am convening a Kurultai."

The Khan paused, his sharp gaze cutting through the gloom. "Additionally, command the brothers of the Apothecarion to audit our entire inventory of gene-seed. I must know the exact remaining martial strength of this Legion."

"By your command, Khan."

The Keshig warrior known as Baatar offered a crisp martial salute, turned upon his heel, and rapidly departed to execute his orders.

Jaghatai looked up into the gathering night sky. A canopy of infinite stars was unfolding overhead, casting a deceptive serenity over the world. He breathed deep the scent of the Chogorisan steppes, his eyes tracking the distant horizon, which had been painted a fierce, fiery crimson by the shifting glow of traditional tribal bonfires.

Several solar days later, the automated networks of Axion received a formal diplomatic request routed through the office of Lord Regent Roboute Guilliman.

The parameters of the missive were exceptionally direct: the Imperium required structural naval cooperation to launch a massive, sector-scale offensive against the Red Corsairs entrenched within the Maelstrom.

Concurrently, Guilliman inquired if Axion would be amenable to provisioning a substantial reserve of the Panacea serum to his newly returned brother. Should the transaction be ratified, the realm of Greater Ultramar stood prepared to fully underwrite the material cost of the pharmaceutical shipment.

Axion harbored no logical reason to decline such a basic petition. Though compiling the Panacea serum was, to the computational systems of an Iron Man, nothing more than loading an ancient schematic, feeding raw chemical components into a molecular assembler, and waiting for the compilation cycle to conclude, the fact that the Lord Regent had explicitly offered to pay meant Axion had no intention of squandering the economic windfall.

The transaction was finalized with clinical efficiency.

Two colossal Machine Weavers materialized in the orbital spheres of Chogoris and Macragge respectively.

The White Scars and the Ultramarines received the resulting shipments of the legendary Panacea serum, measured not in individual vials, but in raw, industrial metric tons, with absolute, stunned disbelief. In return, Axion's heavy logistics carriers departed Ultramar laden with tens of millions of tons of rare, high-grade strategic minerals.

Both parties concluded the exchange with optimal satisfaction.

The machine intelligences of Axion had never truly quantified the near-religious value the Imperium placed upon a compound that, during the golden age of humanity, had been utilized as little more than a broad-spectrum industrial disinfectant.

Throughout the era of the Federation, the Panacea formula was completely ubiquitous, stocked as a default baseline within every automated med-bay and domestic repair drone across civilized space. In those days, organic disease had been an obsolete concept; any localized infection or biological instability was instantly corrected with a single, automated injection.

Upon receiving this bounty of mythic medicine, Chief Apothecary Corpus Helix of the Ultramarines immediately sequestered several high-purity master samples, placing them under absolute stasis-lock. These specific reserves were designated to be carried directly to the Great Work by the rotating echelons of the Victrix Guard, ensuring the absolute physical preservation of the Primarch at all times.

Additional auxiliary caches were distributed to the veteran bodyguards flanking Marneus Calgar. In the crucible of future campaigns, these warriors would utilize the serum to preserve the Chapter Master's life at any cost.

The remainder of the massive shipment was instantly moved to secure subterranean vaults.

Helix then assembled a vast detachment of white-helmeted Apothecaries and chartered a direct warp vector for Nocturne. Rumors had reached the Macragge Apothecarion that the Salamanders had already deciphered the optimal methodology for utilizing the ancient serum.

To engage in collaborative biochemical analysis with their genetic cousins was a matter of sound logistical logic.

When the Ultramarines task force touched down upon the obsidian plates of Nocturne, they discovered Chief Apothecary Ogholei of the White Scars was already present within the sanctuary, deep in his own studies. Though the specific gene-seed strain of each individual Adeptus Astartes Chapter possessed unique metaphysical and phenotypic variances, possessing an empirical baseline was infinitely superior to blind experimentation.

As the most legendary Chief Apothecary of the Sons of Vulkan, Harath Shen personally received his transhuman cousins with formal, somber grace.

What followed, however, would leave the Apothecaries of both the Ultramarines and the White Scars in a state of profound, cognitive shock.

Harath Shen was entirely aware of why his genetic relatives had journeyed to his forge-world the moment he learned their Chapters had received bulk quantities of the Panacea from the Iron Men. While he did not believe the immaculate gene-seed lines of the Sons of Guilliman required urgent structural stabilization, the Salamanders were never slow to share their hard-won wisdom with steadfast allies.

Deep within a subterranean mountain bastion guarded by heavily armored companies of Firedrakes, the visiting Apothecaries were introduced to the most absurdly crude and brutal methodology of administration they had ever witnessed.

Before them lay a massive, shallow industrial reservoir filled to the brim with the glowing, iridescent fluid of the sacred, ancient serum.

A series of automated mechanical sieves were operating over the pool, lowering entire crates of harvested gene-seed directly into the sacred mire for a perfunctory, brief immersion. The cranes would then hoist the organs clear of the fluid, giving them a sharp, unceremonious shake to dislodge any excess drops of the priceless Panacea.

The briefly submerged gene-seed organs were then deposited straight into transparent transport canisters and carefully cataloged along the far wall.

As the gene-seed storage pods rolled along the metallic conveyor grates, an extraordinary transformation occurred. No matter how warped, shriveled, or strangely asymmetric the organs had appeared prior to their immersion, the absolute moment they came into contact with the Panacea, they swelled with vital fluid, becoming flawlessly plump, pristine, and structurally sound.

Shen stepped forward, picking up a standard gene-seed diagnostic cogitator. With a casual flick of his wrist, he retrieved a single organ that had just undergone the brief 'rinse' protocol and held it up to display the data-slate to the assembled Ultramarines and White Scars specialists.

[Gene-seed Structural Integrity: 100%]

[Gen-seed Biological Activity: 100%]

[Gene-seed Genetic Purity: 100%]

[Gene-seed Homeostatic Stability: Perfect]

[Overall Status: Perfect]

The mass of transhuman medical experts stood paralyzed in the center of the laboratory, their minds struggling to reconcile such primitive, brute-force handling with such impossible, divine results.

Before anyone could formulate a response, the heavy blast doors of the laboratory hissed open. A Salamanders Apothecary strode into the room, his Artificer armor scorched and pitted by recent combat, carrying two heavy, mag-locked containment cases in his hands.

Harath Shen strode forward to meet him. Following a brief, hushed exchange of operational details, Shen clapped the battle-brother on his pauldron and took custody of the scarred containers.

The primary seals hissed open, revealing two neat rows of fractured, physically degraded gene-seed organs. Worse still, the flesh of the zygotes bore the unmistakable, weeping necrosis of distinct chaotic corruption.

Without a shred of hesitation, Shen unlatched the internal brackets.

He then tossed the fractured, warp-tainted gene-seed organs directly into the primary reservoir of the Panacea.

The sight caused the visiting Ultramarines and White Scars Apothecaries to let out a collective, horrified gasp. To permit warp-corrupted genetic material to make direct physical contact with an open pool of viable biological samples was a violation of every sacred oath of the Apothecarion; it risked triggering a localized, catastrophic chain-contamination.

As a veteran Chief Apothecary, Harath Shen was naturally cognizant of the baseline protocols governing warp contamination.

Yet his actions were dictated by the absolute, infallible certainty that only the Panacea could provide.

The moment the dark, chaotic corruption touched the glowing surface of the serum, the warp-toxins were instantly, violently neutralized, burning away into faint wisps of sterile vapor. The fractured, incomplete gene-seed organs began to writhe and spasm within the fluid, their cellular walls rapidly mutating and regenerating to complete their missing sequences.

The structural gouges and trauma sustained during battle were knitted shut in a matter of heartbeats.

Shen reached down with a gloved hand, plucking the restored organs directly out of the pool. He passed a diagnostic scanner over the damp tissue, and the display instantly flashed its empirical findings.

The readout was a uniform, unbroken line of perfect hundreds and flawless designations.

The organs were completely indistinguishable from first-generation gene-seed harvested fresh from the veins of a living Primarch during the dawn of the Great Crusade.

Having witnessed this absolute defiance of biological law with their own optics, the Apothecaries of the Ultramarines and the White Scars turned upon their heels and departed Nocturne without uttering another syllable.

Harath Shen watched them go, a grim, knowing smile playing across his ash-black features. He found their abrupt departure entirely unsurprising. When he had first verified the theoretical capabilities of the Panacea alongside Vulkan himself, he had reacted in precisely the same manner.

No healer in the galaxy, no matter how stoic, could remain unchanged after gazing into the face of such a miracle.
