Chapter 546 - Construction on a Grand Scale?

On the periphery of the Eye of Terror, a full Imperial Navy battlefleet stood sentinel.

Although the venerable Imperial Regent, the Avenging Son and executor of the Emperor's divine will, Roboute Guilliman, had dispatched several fleets of Iron Men to assist in the defense, the sheer magnitude of the Eye of Terror necessitated a formidable presence. Imperial warships remained in overwhelming numbers, patrolling the surrounding void.

Through their reinforced viewports, the crew could see a mechanical miracle that nearly eclipsed the Eye of Terror itself.

The gargantuan vessel identified by their scanners as the Heart of the Forge had been anchored there for nearly three days. During this time, a colossal, square-frame metal structure had gradually taken shape, while three equally massive cruciform skeletons expanded rapidly around it. Each of these structures spanned over a hundred kilometers, surpassing the scale of any warship the crew had ever witnessed.

Inside the bridge of the Majestic-class battleship, acting as the fleet's flagship, soft light bathed the instrument panels. The helmsman frowned, his hands dancing across the console as he glanced toward the Captain with a flicker of apprehension.

"Captain, how much longer are we expected to maintain this station?"

His fingers tapped rhythmically against the console, betraying a sense of unease. The Captain, a man appearing to be in his late forties, possessed the nonchalant air of a hardened veteran. He wore an antiquated naval coat, yet its fine craftsmanship and superior material remained unmistakable.

"What is it, helmsman? Are you starting to miss the days of living in constant terror?"

The Captain leaned back in his command chair, eyes fixed on the shifting data stream of his slate, his posture radiating confidence and composure. The helmsman waved a hand dismissively, a fleeting look of awkwardness crossing his face.

"No, no… of course not. If we could have this much peace every day, that would certainly be a blessing."

He paused, his gaze drifting toward the infinite stars outside and the towering form of the Heart of the Forge.

"It's just... this tranquility feels unreal." He reached up to touch his chin, lost in thought.

The Captain straightened, setting his slate on the nearby pedestal. He walked over to the helmsman and gave his shoulder a firm, reassuring pat.

"Ease your mind, helmsman. We are merely following orders to observe the Iron Men's activities. Frankly, this is far more meaningful than simply vaporizing a few daemons and turncoats."

He swept his gaze across the bustling bridge crew before speaking in a booming voice.

"Once we return from this tour, every soul on this ship shall be granted a month's shore leave."

The announcement sparked immediate excitement among the crew, though the Tech-Priests present remained markedly somber. They had long lost track of how long they had been stationed here; since their deployment to the Eye of Terror, their nerves had been stretched to the breaking point. However, when the Inquisition ordered them to cooperate with the Adeptus Mechanicus in monitoring this colossal ship, the Tech-Priests were the first to regain their vigor, verging on religious fanaticism.

The helmsman's eyes lit up, but skepticism soon followed. He raised an eyebrow, leaning forward as if waiting for a concrete promise.

"Really? It won't be like last time, where the Departmento Munitorum transferred us to another vessel after only forty Terran hours of duty?"

The Captain chuckled at the man's expression and gave a solemn nod.

"I give you my word."

His voice carried such authority that the helmsman's doubts began to dissipate. Seeing the crew's spirits steady, the Captain let out a long, slow breath, peering cautiously once more at that planetary-scale shadow.

"Just what in the name of the Machine God are these iron-wrought machines building?"

On the Heart of the Forge, countless mechanical entities labored without respite.

Axion had previously divided the periphery of the Eye of Terror into several sectors, each guarded by a standard fleet. But with the impending Crusade of Retribution, Axion required the mobilization of his massive forces. To prevent the enemy from surging out of the Eye once the fleets were redeployed, an exodus that could shatter the Imperial defensive line, Axion had decided to lay down insurance.

The Heart of the Forge began constructing two massive Star Forts and a singular macro-architectural weapon in every sector. A portion of these materials was paid for by the Aeldari ransom facilitated by Guilliman, but the majority had been harvested from the residual biological mass left by the Hive Fleet Kraken.

Each Star Fort was shaped like a unique five-pointed star, reminiscent of a sliced starfruit. Spanning over two hundred kilometers in diameter, they cast a dazzling, silver-white radiance into the vast void, appearing like newborn celestial bodies.

The outer shell was forged from a mysterious silver-white alloy; it was hard as tempered adamantium and smooth as a mirror, yet covered in unique, intricate textures. The heavy armor plating was inscribed with primitive psychic runes; the flickering light dancing across them suggested these markings were far more than mere decoration. When the fortress was active, the runes glowed with a deep, haunting azure, a flow of energy that seemed to whisper of ancient, eldritch mysteries, emitting a pervasive, awe-inspiring psychic resonance.

Viewed from the apex, five massive ridges extended outward from the center, forming the star. Each ridge was wide and thick, with upturned edges that functioned as a unique defensive structure. The surfaces were similarly etched with psychic runes, and embedded at regular intervals were massive, pure psychic crystals. These gems not only provided supplementary power for the station's weaponry but also generated formidable psychic shields to repel the corrosive touch of the Warp during battle.

Beyond this, the fortresses were equipped with conventional power systems. Massive dark-matter reactor cores were housed in the deepest bowels of the station, projecting an immense energy barrier on the same scale as those found on Titan-class vessels, enveloping the entire structure.

At the heart of the star-fort lay a cluster of complex structures, housing all major sensor arrays and ancillary equipment. From a lateral perspective, one could see a semi-hollowed, giant ring structure at the base. This utilized ancient star-gate technology, similar in nature to the Kalium Gate once discovered by the Imperium.

However, Axion had upgraded the technology once again. By leveraging data analysis of psychic phenomena and upgrading the Warp-jump technology used by the Warp Runners, Axion had birthed something new.

Because of this specific integration, Axion designated these stations as Land-class Star Forts, representing the concept of the "Leap" or "Bound." These unique star-gates could link with others of their kind to serve as transmission nodes, allowing warships to traverse the void and rapidly reposition across the theater of war.
