Chapter 547 - The Encirclement

Beyond their specialized star-gate apparatuses and dual-layered void shielding, these star forts were bristling with anti-matter furnace cannons. These were simplified iterations of the anti-matter ray arrays found on Titan-class vessels, possessing sufficient destructive output to vaporize an Imperial battleship in a single volley.

Every ridge was deployed with nearly a hundred multi-linked missile launchers, each loaded with entropy-amplifying warheads. Upon impact, these terrifying munitions released a pale blue energy field; within a two-kilometer radius, the molecular bonds of all matter, metallic or organic, would be violently unraveled, causing the structures to warp and collapse like melting wax.

Flanking both sides of the ridges were numerous rotating turrets. Armed with Plasma Rift Cannons, they fired high-temperature plasma beams capable of burning wide, ever-expanding molten chasms into enemy ship armor. This uniquely engineered weapon architecture, when harmonized with primitive psychic runes, could even siphon energy from an enemy's void shields, redirecting that power back into the barrels to scale the firing potency in proportion to the target's defensive strength.

In select sectors, colossal-bore Ectoplasmic Dissociation Cannons were mounted, ensuring that the fortress would not be rendered toothless when faced with supernatural adversaries.

Because of the proximity to the Eye of Terror, Axion could not guarantee that his vat-grown psychic Astartes would remain free of corruption after prolonged exposure to the Warp; consequently, no psychic-based weaponry was installed here. The psychic crystals embedded within the forts were utilized solely to constitute psychic pulse arrays and to feed the psychic shielding. These pulse arrays could release high-density psychic energy in an instant, forming devastating psychic tides. Such violent storms would engulf a vast area, leaving any hostiles within shredded to nothingness.

Conventional armaments were scattered across every interior and exterior surface of the star fort to address any conceivable challenge. Even though the interior was nearly filled to capacity with machinery, the forts still housed tens of thousands of combat automata and massive caches of emergency repair components.

On the outer structure of the fort's mid-section sat several colossal, single-berth docking structures. These spaceports did not merely facilitate the transfer of materiel; they provided comprehensive repair and resupply services for any vessel.

The megastructure nestled between every pair of star forts was the most lethal component of this defensive configuration: the Mechanicus Doomstar Cannon.

This was a weapon once utilized to obliterate enemy fortresses and worlds, capable of reducing entire star systems to ruin. Long ago, Axion had used nanites to induce simple, temporary structural deformation in a ship's hull to construct a miniaturized prototype. Its power scaled significantly with its physical mass, and the iteration constructed this time was of an exponentially larger magnitude.

A singular weapon spanning over a hundred kilometers in length possessed a destructive potential that defied description. While it might not shatter a star system in one go, it could easily turn a planet into debris. Its operational range was equally staggering, capable of covering dozens of astronomical units.

The megastructure drew its power from the two adjacent star forts, which also provided localized defensive coverage, leaving the cannon itself to focus exclusively on neutralizing long-range threats. Even gargantuan Ark Mechanicus or drifting space hulks would be torn asunder in an instant before the fury of the Mechanicus Doomstar Cannon.

As the Heart of the Forge departed, the standard Imperial fleet guarding the sector followed in its wake. Left behind in the void were the three monolithic structures. The spatial anchors of the two star forts locked themselves, and the Mechanicus Doomstar Cannon, firmly into the fabric of the void.

The Heart of the Forge began to manifest in various sectors around the Eye, leaving behind successive strings of forts before vanishing once more. These star forts were interconnected via their integrated star-gates, allowing for instantaneous transit to any point along the perimeter of the Eye. Through this method, Axion drastically reduced the number of fleets required to maintain the watch. Now, only a single standard fleet was needed for rapid response, eliminating the necessity for constant, grueling patrols. After all, the forts' ultra-long-range deep-space scanners possessed significantly higher power outputs and greater fidelity than those mounted on standard warships.

As a portion of the psychic-driven detectors began operation, the interference of the Warp became manageable. Even the former bastion of Cadia, now shattered, lay beyond this new defensive line.

These near-solid megastructures took considerably longer to construct than standard starships. The Imperial Navy personnel eventually gave these mechanical citadels a curious moniker: the "Tri-Star Sentinel." Every time an Imperial fleet encountered the Heart of the Forge, they would hover obediently at the periphery, waiting for the Iron Men to depart before meticulously recording the coordinates and transmitting them to High Command.

The Inquisition and the Departmento Munitorum eventually synthesized this data, discovering that the Iron Men had utilized this distributed structure to envelop over two-thirds of the "safe zones" around the Eye of Terror, areas where Warp storms were relatively calm, providing stable corridors for enemy ingress and egress. Over fifty star forts monitored the Eye day and night; even the Nachmund Gauntlet had been reinforced with two such clusters.

When the final fort was completed, they were all activated in unison. That day was marked as a day of remembrance for the Navy. They had not understood the purpose of these citadels at the time, but the moment they were brought online, several synchronized rings of light erupted around the Eye of Terror, the radiance of the Tri-Star Sentinel firing in concert. The sheer violence of the energy discharge was so great that it inverted the tide of the Warp, pushing the roiling currents back into the Eye itself.

Upon the activation of the forts, Axion instantly identified tens of billions of targets within the churning space surrounding the Eye. This included vast asteroid belts, meteor swarms, and a host of Chaos entities lurking within a radius of several light-years.

The glowing rings encircling the Eye pulsed for hours, until the surrounding sector was rendered a void of true matter. Any entity remaining in this space, be it Chaos renegade, daemon, or Warp-spawned abomination, was laid bare. The Mechanicus Doomstar Cannons pulverized several planetary-scale, distorted shadows that had flickered in the turbulence of the Warp, though their true nature remained obscured, leaving no one to say whether they were planets lost to the Warp or something far more eldritch.

Axion did not dispatch forces to investigate the shifting, blurred thresholds where reality broke down; to preclude the possibility of unforeseen catastrophe, he simply erased these massive shadows from space with his cannons.

By the time Roboute Guilliman received the report, two Terran months had already passed since the Iron Men's forts had fully occupied the defensive perimeter. Upon learning that the Iron Men had successfully ringed the Eye of Terror, the Regent, then stationed on Baal, offered only a single, quiet reflection:

"A miracle that only the Iron Men could achieve."

Having secured the Panacea from the Iron Men, Guilliman had allowed himself a dose. Now, even with his Armour of Fate removed, the scars that had never truly healed were gone. Every lingering malaise had vanished. After confirming with Chapter Master Calgar that the stores of the panacea on Ultramar were sufficient, Guilliman personally transported tens of thousands of cubic meters of the miracle cure to Baal. He relayed the effects to Dante, urging him to take a dose.

The Imperium Nihilus still needed him. The unpredictable Lion had returned to vigor only to become even more erratic, Jaghatai would likely follow the Iron Men into the Eye at a moment's notice, and Vulkan simply wished to wash his hands of all political affairs.
