Chapter 36 - Chapter 35: The Broken Flame

The world shattered into silence.

When Kael touched the Heart, light devoured everything — and then, nothing. No sound. No breath. Just a space between moments.

He floated in a sea of silver and black mist. The Heart's pulse was gone; instead, a soft hum filled the void. His hands trembled — they weren't fully human anymore. Silver scales crawled up his skin, glowing faintly with shifting veins of darkness beneath. His wings, half-white and half-shadowed, extended wide and slow.

"So… this is what they feared."

Kael's voice echoed softly, though no one stood near him. The words hung in the void like broken glass.

Then — a whisper. Gentle, almost kind.

"No, Kael. This is what they hoped for."

He spun, eyes glowing gold and black. A figure appeared before him — his grandfather, or something wearing his face. Theron looked younger, calm, and surrounded by drifting embers.

Kael's heart sank. "You're not real."

The image smiled faintly. "Perhaps not. But your blood remembers me."

Kael's fists tightened. "You lied to me. You said the Silver Flame was meant to destroy darkness—"

Theron shook his head. "It was meant to understand it. We never told you the whole truth because we feared what you would become."

Kael stepped closer, anger mixing with confusion. "What do you mean?"

The illusion's eyes dimmed. "The first dragons were never divided by good and evil, Kael. They were both. Balance made them eternal — until mortals forced the split. Your bloodline is not light's champion… it is its reconciliation."

Kael's pulse quickened. "You mean… I'm part of both sides."

Theron's form began to flicker. "You are what neither side can control."

And then he vanished.

Kael was alone again, the void trembling around him. His body ached, torn between burning silver and consuming dark.

Then — a voice broke through the void. Familiar. Desperate.

"Kael! Kael, wake up!"

Lira.

The world snapped back into form. Kael gasped, collapsing onto the stone floor of the Citadel chamber. The Heart still hovered nearby, its pulse weaker now, dimmer — as though part of it had been taken.

Lira knelt beside him, eyes wide. "You were gone for minutes — I couldn't reach you. What happened?"

Kael sat up slowly, his voice rough. "I saw him. My grandfather. Or something pretending to be him."

"What did he say?"

Kael hesitated, his golden eyes now streaked with faint traces of black. "That the Silver Flame wasn't made to fight darkness… but to unite with it."

Lira froze. "Kael, that's—"

He looked at her, expression unreadable. "Maybe that's why the Demon King wants me alive. He doesn't want to destroy me. He wants to finish what was started."

The ground beneath them rumbled. Cracks spread across the walls. The Heart's glow dimmed further, as though its power was being drawn away.

Lira turned toward it. "What's happening now?"

A voice answered from the shadows — deep, calm, and cruel.

"The Heart recognizes its other half."

Kael's head snapped up. A silhouette emerged from the far end of the chamber, cloaked in black fire. His presence froze the air — and though his face was hidden, Kael knew.

The Demon King had arrived.

Lira took a step back. The weight of his aura was unbearable — a storm of darkness that made even Kael's dragon blood tremble.

The King's voice was almost soothing. "You've done well, Kael. The Heart's seal is broken because of you. Now its essence flows freely — through both of us."

Kael rose to his feet, wings spreading, silver and shadow fire burning across his arms. "I didn't do this for you."

The Demon King chuckled softly. "You say that… but do you even know where you end and I begin?"

Kael lunged forward — and in that instant, their flames collided. Silver and black light clashed violently, shaking the Citadel to its foundations. Lira was thrown against the wall, her scream drowned by the explosion of power.

For a moment, Kael saw the King's face — and he froze.

It was his own.

Older. Twisted. Scarred by time and shadow, but unmistakably Kael's.

Kael staggered back, horrified. "No… no, that's not possible—"

The King smiled, his burning eyes reflecting Kael's shock.

"Every flame casts its own shadow. You are mine… and I am your future."

The Citadel shook again. The Heart pulsed once more — and split, releasing waves of raw energy through the chamber.

Lira reached for Kael, shouting over the roar — "Kael! We have to go!"

But Kael stood frozen, staring at the version of himself smiling from across the chamber.

And then, the world fell apart in a burst of light.
