Chapter 2 - Above the clouds

I'm home.

"Oh, Vynn, you've arrived! Have a seat."

Sitting elegantly across from me was my mother, Victoria Zane. She had blonde hair, a sharp face, and slightly narrow eyes that held a gentle yet commanding presence.

"Oh, Vynn, you're late! Did you get extra lessons from Miss Anies again?" she asked.

"Yeah, she's relentlessly determined that I must study and develop my thread."

"Well, you must know that if you want to join the army."

"I know I look clumsy and all, but I'm determined to develop my power," I replied.

"Good. I have high hopes for you as my son. I'm very confident you will achieve great things, whether for yourself or others."

"Stop joking Mother. You know my nature."

She laughed softly, "Yeah, I do. I've seen you grow up after all. So, tell me, how was your day at the academy?"

"It was the same old routine, nothing new. Teachers are a pain in the ass."

"Language, Vynn!"

"Sorry, Mother, slip of the tongue. You know how it is."

"Yeah, I caught up with Laya and Lark before returning home."

"They're good kids. I'm surprised they've managed to stay your friends for so long," she smiled.

"Yeah, they're the only ones I find interesting. Honestly, I'm a little surprised myself."

"You seem to like the books I gave you. Perhaps I shouldn't have," she teased.

My mother loves books about psychology and human behavior. She encourages me to read them with her, and from a young age, I have learned a lot about people and their ways.

"Oh, Vynn, I forgot to tell you , your uncle is coming home for dinner tonight."

"What! , Why is uncle coming?'' He rarely comes home since he, my brother, and sisters are often at the front lines due to the long-standing tension between Demorai and Vaylen.

"Did he say why?"

"No, but from what I gather, it's probably to see you."

"Why? He just sees me as a disappointment in the family. Why would he want to see me?"

"I don't know. You'll have to ask him yourself."

"Alright, Mother. I'm going to my room."

Why is he coming? I don't like seeing my family except for you. Well, I guess I have to face him after all. Sigh.

The night had long settled when a figure appeared, walking across the street in dark leather armour and a full-length cloak, illuminated by moonlight.

"Is he the target?" two humanoid creatures whispered, observing the man.

"Yeah, he matches the description from our lady. We have to follow him and get his location."

Suddenly, the man turned, his long-lasting abyss eyes locking on them. His light yellow hair was streaked with silver. The two creatures immediately felt despair in his presence.

"Let's get back. I don't like his stare. It feels like he knows we're watching."

"Agreed, but what do we tell the lady?"

"I don't know, but first, we get the hell away from him."

"Yeah, but we have to follow for a few more minutes."

They followed him until he turned into a narrow alley. Suddenly, they lost sight of him.

"Let's go down, we have to check it, otherwise we are dead. If we return empty-handed.

They make their way down, and there's no one here. Where is he?"

Suddenly, a chilling aura rose behind them, and a voice whispered, "Who sent you?"

Frozen, they didn't know what to do. They thought they could run, but immediately knew running meant death.

They look at each other, trying to decide what to do

The mysterious figure spoke, "Don't worry if you tell me who sent you, I won't kill you. "

"We are here by the order of the Lady of the Night," one stammered.

The man's response was instant; he killed them on the spot. As he sat down to check the body, he found something "They are onto us now."

At the family table, my mother and I sat across from each other. The dining table was set by my mother, who usually did not handle such things, but today she did it herself. Our maid, Sera, usually does this, so maybe Mother was happy to see Uncle after so long, or maybe she just wanted to ease the tension for me.

Finally, the gate opened, and my uncle arrived. He wasn't muscular, but his hair, black with a peculiar sheen, stood out. He often dressed in military attire. His dark eyes, like mine, softened slightly as he gently removed his cloak and sat at the table.

"How's your work going, Lane?" my mother asked him.

"Nothing new, my lady. Everything is running smoothly."

Their relationship was strange. My uncle always called my mother "my lady," while she addressed him by name. I thought it was their unique form of love as sibling.

He looked at me next. "How are you, Vynn? The last time I saw you was about four months ago. I was on the front lines, discussing issues with the emperor and the Ascendants."

The Ascendants, the eight most powerful people in the kingdom, held military and martial supremacy. They were ranked from the 1st seat of Ascendants to the 8th, all military generals of unmatched skill.

"Oh, Lane, let's stop the military talk for now," my mother interrupted.

"Yes, my lady, as you wish."

"So, Vynn, how are you?"

"I'm fine," I said nonchalantly.

"How's your preparation for the Threadspire?"

I hate that topic.

"It's coming along well, I guess ", I muttered, trying to eat my dinner as soon as possible.

I didn't understand why my uncle's aura seemed so intimidating, yet in front of Mother, he just softened completely.

"Work hard, Vynn. Your mother and I have high hopes for you, even though you weren't born with great talent like your sisters or your brother, but you can still be a good minister or tactician like me, I can even guide you in that regard apart from the basic manoeuvres that I have taught you- ."

"Uncle, I took a big pause as I was trying to stop his speech mid-way "I know my limits. You don't have to worry about me. As a matter of being a tactician, you don't have to worry as well. I want to have a strategy in my arsenal as well, but I wanna learn it through my own way "

I finished my meal as quickly as possible and left the table.

Vynn never liked me, but it was expected that I barely saw him when he was growing up or rather, when I knowingly pushed his boundaries. he moved from his chair and asked, "Shall we go ?"

"Of course, Lane. We have much to catch up."

As I walked into my room, I opened the window. seeing the moon and thought

I know my limits better than anyone. I don't want to hear what I can or cannot do. I will become an unparalleled force in this world, that is my greatest desire.

Every human is born with nothing, not talking about wealth or inheritance, but ideas, morals, values that shape one's own very identity.

as we start to grew up we start to fill ourselves with our very own values morals virtue our very own ideology which builds our very own character but those who let other decide what's good for them, those who let others fill their very own identity whether its your parents or other for their whole life and get die at the end is what i despise the most.

They have nothing to claim of their own in this world, if they can't even own their identity. We are who we are deep down, but only we have the power to become someone else. That is why we sit at the top of the food chain.

Vynn clenched the moon in his palm and thought.

But I will break the food chain. Nothing will stop me, not morals, society, righteousness, nor good or evil. My line is my path, and my path is my destiny, whether it's gonna be great or worse

As I aspire to rise above the clouds.
