Chapter 9 – Words Left Unsaid

Jay's pov

The morning light crept through the curtains as I dropped my bag on the couch. I didn't even make it to the kitchen before Aries spoke up.

"You're pacing again," he said, looking at me over the rim of his mug.

There it is. Horoscope and his so-called wisdom.

Out loud, I muttered, "I'm not pacing."

He raised an eyebrow. "You are. And your face says you're overthinking."

I groaned. "Do you rehearse this? Being so annoying?"

"Nope," he said easily. "It's natural talent."

I flopped onto the armchair. "Whatever. Don't you have work or something?"

"Don't you have something to tell me?" he shot back. His tone was light, but his eyes were sharper than usual.

I froze. Of course he noticed. Aries always noticed.

Finally, I sighed. "…Keifer's back."

That made him pause, his teasing smile faltering just slightly. "The London guy."

"Don't call him that," I said quickly, more defensive than I meant to be.

Aries tilted his head, watching me. "So, how do you feel?"

How did I feel? Relief? Anger? Confusion? It was all mixed up.

"I don't know," I admitted, staring at the floor.

He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "Then don't force it. Sometimes answers come when you stop trying to fight the question."

I rolled my eyes. Classic Horoscope advice. But deep down, I knew he was right.

Later that afternoon, Keifer and I ended up walking home together. The streets were quieter than usual—no Section E trailing behind us this time, thankfully.

"You're quiet today," he said, glancing at me.

"Maybe I finally learned from you," I said, smirking faintly.

He chuckled. "I didn't mean to upset you yesterday."

"You didn't," I replied quickly, then hesitated. "…Okay, maybe a little. But it's fine. I'm used to it."

Keifer slowed his steps, his expression more serious now. "I don't want you to be 'used to it.'"

My chest tightened. I didn't answer. Words stuck in my throat, so I let the silence speak instead. He didn't push. We just kept walking, side by side. Somehow, that said more than anything else could.

When I got home, Aries was waiting on the couch like a guard dog. "So?" he asked immediately.

I narrowed my eyes. "So what?"

He smirked. "Don't play dumb. You were with him, weren't you?"

I groaned. "Are you spying on me now?"

"Nope," he said, leaning back smugly. "I just know you too well."

Horoscope is insufferable, I thought, resisting the urge to throw a pillow at him again.

But when I glanced at him, Aries wasn't teasing anymore. His expression was softer, almost… relieved.

"You don't have to figure it all out right now, Jay," he said gently. "But maybe… don't shut him out completely."

For a second, I let the words sink in. Maybe Aries was right. Maybe I didn't need all the answers yet.

I headed to my room, flopping onto my bed with a sigh. The memory of Keifer's voice lingered in my mind: I don't want you to be used to it.

And for the first time in a long time, I wondered if maybe—just maybe—there was still something left for us to rebuild.
