Chapter 95 - Chapter 95: Barney and His Recovery

That Night, in Barney's Apartment

The whole group was gathered around Barney, who lay on the sofa with his legs elevated on pillows.

"This is humiliating," said Barney, indisposed just from running.

"It's deserved," said Robin.

"You ran a marathon without training. What did you expect?" inquired Ted calmly.

"I didn't expect this. I expected glory, women, and an increase in my overall attractiveness," Barney replied petulantly.

"And what did you get?" asked Robin curiously.

"Pain, a medal, and a woman at mile seven who won't call me back," said Barney with little pride.

"That's more than most people get," Lily commented.

Alyx appeared from the kitchen with a homemade ice pack.

"Put this on your knees. It reduces inflammation."

Barney obeyed, surprisingly docile.

"Why are you so good at this?" asked Barney.

"I've seen a lot of injuries. In my other life."

"Other life?" asked Ted and Barney together.

"Don't ask."

Lily sat next to Marshall on the other sofa. They were exhausted, but happy.

"Today was a strange day," said Lily.

"You camped for a dress, I trained for a marathon and Barney ran it, Robin threw eggs at a car, Alyx played nurse. It's been the most normal day of our lives."

"That's sad," said Robin.

"It's our life," Ted smiled. "And I wouldn't change it for anything."

Barney raised his hand weakly. "I would. I'd change it for legs that work."

"That'll happen tomorrow," said Marshall.

"Sure?" asked Barney hopefully.

"No, but it sounds good," Marshall finished.

The night wore on. They ordered food, watched a movie. Barney fell asleep on the sofa, snoring softly, the medal still hanging around his neck.

Alyx covered him with a blanket.

"He's an idiot," said Lily.

"But he's our idiot. And tomorrow he'll hurt much more," Alyx commented affectionately.

"That's why I gave him ibuprofen. He'll be fine," Alyx finished softly.

Marshall put an arm around Lily, and Alyx gently took Lily's hand. "Thanks for coming back. I missed you."

"We missed you too. Even if it was just one night," Lily replied.

"A very long night," Alyx commented.

"The longest of my life. But I got the dress."

"And the car?"

"The car paid," Alyx said teasingly.

Marshall smiled. "That's my girl."

One Week Later – Ted's Apartment

Ted received a court summons. Jumping the turnstile had cost him a fine and a court date.

"It's ridiculous," he complained to Robin. "I was just trying to help Barney."

"The law doesn't understand good intentions," said Robin, somewhat tired of the story.

"The law is stupid," Ted muttered.

"Tell that to the judge," she suggested sarcastically.

The court date was the same day as his flight to Chicago. The interview for his dream job. The opportunity of a lifetime.

Ted sighed. "This is going to be a problem."

"And it was, kids. That problem cost me the flight. And that flight cost me the job. And that job would have taken me to Chicago, where I would never have met your mother."

Ted smiles, stroking the 1939 penny he still keeps.

"But that's not what matters. What matters is that weekend, three women camped on a sidewalk, delivered poetic justice with rotten eggs, and created a tradition that would last forever."

"The tradition of throwing eggs?" asks Luke.

"The tradition of being together. Of supporting each other. Of turning nightmares into stories to tell. That's what made our group work. That's what kept us together."

Ted's daughter smiles. "I like Alyx. She's the best."

"They all were, sweetheart. They all were," Ted recalls warmly.

Months Later – A Brief Glimpse of the Future

The ceremony was small. Intimate. Legally complicated, but emotionally perfect.

Lily wore the dress she had gotten that morning after the night of the car. Marshall wore a dark suit. Alyx wore an ivory dress, simple but elegant.

And in the middle of the ceremony, when the officiant (a friend of Marshall's who had gotten an online degree to be able to marry them symbolically) asked if they had anything to say to each other, Lily smiled.

She looked at Marshall, then looked at Alyx.

And she said: "Watermelon."

Marshall and Alyx laughed. The guests didn't understand anything, but they did.

That was their word. Their secret. Their ritual.

After the ceremony, at the reception, Robin raised her glass.

"To Lily, Marshall, and Alyx. To invented traditions. To secret words. And to cars that beep all night."

"To cars that beep!" everyone cheered.

And somewhere in Manhattan, the owner of that car sneezed. He probably still had egg residue in his ventilation system.

"And so, kids, I learned that destiny isn't always what we expect. Sometimes, a lost penny, a broken toe, or a car that beeps all night can change your life forever."

Ted looks at his children with tenderness.

"But if there's one thing I learned from that weekend, it's that the best stories aren't the ones we plan. They're the ones that happen while we're busy doing other things. Like camping on a sidewalk, or throwing eggs at a stranger, or watching your best friend drag himself to the finish line of a marathon with his legs destroyed."

"And Alyx?" asks Ted's daughter.

"Alyx... Alyx was the one who kept everyone sane. The one who took care of Marshall when he got injured. The one who trained Barney. The one who bought the eggs. The one who understood that love doesn't always follow the rules, but that doesn't make it any less real."

"She was special," says Luke.

"They all were. But Alyx... Alyx was the one who reminded us that even in the craziest moments, you have to stop, observe, and write it all down in a sketchbook. Because someday, those notes will become stories."

Ted raises his imaginary glass.

"To camping trips. To wedding dresses. To impossible marathons. And to friends who throw eggs with you at seven in the morning."
