Because Eliora could stop herself, the words spilled out of her mouth in a rush.
"Don't kill her!"
Zarek stopped writing. He slowly lifted his head, looking at her with a strange expression. "Why would I do that?" he asked, slightly confused.
She let out a shaky breath, her shoulders dropping. "Thank you." she whispered.
Zarek didn't say a word or acknowledge her thanks, he just turned his attention back to his paperwork and dipped his pen into the ink.
She watched him and as she looked closer, she noticed the tight lines around his jaw and the tension in his shoulders. It was the same guarded look she had seen on him at breakfast yesterday.
Before she could stop herself, the question slipped out. "How are you?"
Zarek didn't look up from his writing. His hand kept moving over the paper as he gave a dry reply. "Since when did you care?"
