Chapter 286 - Chapter 285: The Breaking of the Throne

The Silver Emperor folded its wings and plunged straight into the glowing blue dome.

True Dragon, wreathed in the last concentrated fury of mammoth strength, sea-serpent cold fire, and pure dragonflame, struck the heart of the ice throne like a spear thrown by the gods. The dome of white mist cracked with a sound like a glacier calving. Azure light and dead blue light exploded outward in a shockwave that flattened the nearest ranks of wights and sent several Others staggering.

The Night King met him in the center of the blast.

Glass sword and True Dragon locked again. This time there was no conversation, no shifting faces—only raw power. The Night King's form had swollen with the life-fire of the sacrificed Others; he stood nearly twice Rhaegar's height, the longsword in his hand a pillar of absolute cold. Every rune on Rhaegar's armor and blade burned at once—shield, hammer, tree, net, wall, ring—fighting to keep the cold from reaching the man inside.

Below, the living saw the dome shatter and surged forward with everything they had left.

Eddard Stark, face black with soot and blood, led the remains of the Direwolf Suicide Squad in a final wedge. Dragonglass spears and the last of the dragonflame torches punched through the thinning ranks of Others. The King-Beyond-the-Wall's giants hurled burning logs that exploded against the base of the throne. From the Wall, every scorpion and ballista that still functioned loosed dragonglass-tipped bolts in a continuous rain.

Roberta stood at the edge of the Wall, wind whipping her black hair, eyes fixed on the two figures locked above the cracking throne. Lord Rickard's hand rested on her shoulder—whether to steady her or himself, neither could have said.

In the sky the duel reached its peak.

The Night King drove Rhaegar back with a series of blows that froze the air itself. One slash caught the Silver Emperor across the chest; silver scales cracked and black frost spread. The dragon screamed and answered with a point-blank torrent of golden-silver fire that forced the Night King to raise both arms in a shield of pure ice. The shield held—but only just.

Rhaegar felt something tear inside his own chest. The runes were failing one by one. The Tree guttered. The Net frayed. Only the Shield and the Hammer still burned bright. He had one strike left that could matter.

He whispered to the Silver Emperor.

The dragon understood.

Instead of climbing away, the Silver Emperor folded its wings and let itself fall—straight down, carrying both riders toward the fractured heart of the ice throne. At the last possible instant Rhaegar stood in the saddle, poured every remaining spark of power into True Dragon, and drove the blade downward with the full weight of man, dragon, and falling sky.

The point of True Dragon sank into the glowing array at the center of the throne.

For a heartbeat nothing happened.

Then the array screamed.

Blue light erupted upward in a column that pierced the clouds. The Night King howled—an inhuman sound of rage and sudden, impossible pain. Cracks raced outward from the embedded sword in every direction. The profound ice, which had endured dragonflame and runes and the sacrifice of dozens of Others, began to split like rotten wood.

"No!" the Night King roared. His form flickered—Stark, Hightower, Bolton, faces of a hundred dead heroes flashing across his features in rapid succession. "I am the will of the god of cold! I cannot end!"

Rhaegar, still standing on the falling dragon, both hands locked around the hilt of True Dragon, answered through clenched teeth:

"Everything ends."

He twisted the blade.

The ice throne exploded.

A wave of blue-white force and shattered ice blasted outward. The Night King was hurled backward, glass sword spinning from his grip. The remaining Others on the field clutched their chests as the blue light in their eyes guttered and died. Wights by the thousands simply stopped moving and collapsed into ordinary corpses.

The Silver Emperor spread its injured wings at the last moment and glided clear of the collapsing ruin. The purple dragon and the black dragon swept in, bathing the shattered remains of the throne in continuous fire until nothing remained but a steaming crater of blackened earth and meltwater.

Rhaegar slid from the saddle the moment they touched ground near Farwinter's gates. His legs nearly buckled. True Dragon was still in his hand, the blade cracked along its length but still glowing faintly azure.

In the crater, something still moved.

The Night King—reduced now to a tall, gaunt figure no larger than a man—pushed himself up on one elbow. His face had settled into a long, weary Stark likeness. The blue light in his eyes was fading.

Rhaegar walked toward him through the steam and falling snow, every step an effort. Behind him the survivors of Farwinter and the Wall began to cheer, ragged and disbelieving.

The Night King looked up at the approaching Dragonlord and gave a small, almost human smile.

"You have only delayed the god of cold," he said, voice thin now. "Winter is patient. It will come again."

Rhaegar raised the cracked True Dragon.

"Then we will be waiting."

He drove the blade down.

The last blue light went out.

Silence fell across the battlefield—true silence, broken only by the wind and the crackle of dying fires. The white mist that had hung over the Haunted Forest for so long began, slowly, to thin and drift away.

Rhaegar stood over the empty crater, chest heaving, and finally allowed himself to sink to one knee.

From the Wall, a single clear horn sounded the all-clear.

The Long Night, for this age at least, was over.
