Chapter 285 - Chapter 284: Fire Against the Throne

The Silver Emperor struck the ice throne like a falling star.

True Dragon, blazing with every fire Rhaegar still commanded, drove straight into the Night King's raised shield. The collision split the air with a sound like the world cracking open. Azure flame and dead ice exploded outward. Profound ice shards the size of horses spun through the white mist. The throne itself shuddered; a deep fracture ran from its base halfway up the seat.

The Night King was forced back a step—the first time he had yielded ground.

Rhaegar did not give him time to recover. He wrenched the Silver Emperor upward, wings beating hard against the unnatural cold, then banked hard. The purple dragon and the black dragon swept in from either side, pouring purple-copper and black-red fire onto the fractured throne. For a moment the entire structure was lost in a three-colored inferno.

On the ground the Winter Wolf survivors and the remaining giants seized the chance. Dragonglass-tipped spears and burning logs crashed into the nearest ranks of Others. Several of the pale figures staggered, blue eyes flickering as steam rose from their wounds. The King-Beyond-the-Wall's voice cut through the chaos:

"Push them! While the throne burns—push!"

Eddard Stark, Bear Claw still in his hand, led a wedge of black-armored men straight into the gap the dragons had opened. Fire and dragonglass did what steel alone never could. Three Others fell in as many breaths, their bodies collapsing into hissing puddles of meltwater.

Above, the Night King answered.

He drove his glass-like longsword into the arm of the throne. Blue light flared. The fracture Rhaegar had made began to close, ice flowing like living water. At the same time the white mist thickened into solid walls. Wights that had been burning rose again, half-charred limbs still moving. The cold deepened until even the dragonflame torches along Farwinter's walls guttered and shrank.

Rhaegar felt the temperature drop inside his own lungs. The Shield Rune on his armor flared desperately. He poured more of the sea-serpent's cold fire into the mix, forcing the flames to burn hotter rather than die.

"You cannot unmake what the god of cold has claimed," the Night King called, voice carrying easily through the storm. His face had settled into a long, solemn Stark likeness, though the eyes remained pure blue ice. "Every hero who died Beyond the Wall feeds me. Every drop of their blood is mine."

Rhaegar wheeled the Silver Emperor for another pass. "Then I will burn the blood out of you."

He dove again. This time he did not aim for the shield. He aimed for the throne's heart—the glowing array of limbs and runes still pulsing at its center. True Dragon struck true. Azure fire sank deep into the blue ice. The array screamed, a sound felt more than heard. Several of the supporting Others on the ground clutched their heads and staggered.

The Night King retaliated with a sweeping slash that froze the air itself. A blade of pure cold, wider than a dragon's wing, scythered toward Rhaegar. The Silver Emperor rolled, but the edge still caught the dragon's hind leg. Silver scales blackened with frost. The dragon roared in pain and rage, flames guttering for a heartbeat.

Rhaegar felt the wound as if it were his own. He answered by driving every remaining spark of the mammoth fire seed into his arms. Strength flooded him. He stood in the saddle, True Dragon held in both hands, and met the Night King's next strike head-on.

Sword and spear of ice locked. Runes flared—hammer, tree, net, shield—against the dead light of the god of cold. For several long breaths the two figures hung in the air above the throne, neither yielding, the storm howling around them.

Below, Roberta watched from the Wall, knuckles white on the stone. Beside her Lord Rickard's face was unreadable, but his hand rested on the hilt of Ice as though he meant to leap the three hundred feet himself.

"He cannot hold that forever," the Old Bear's remaining officers muttered. "No man can."

Yet Rhaegar held.

Then the Night King smiled—an expression that did not belong on any living face.

"Enough."

He released the lock, dropped straight down onto the throne, and slammed both palms against the ice. The entire structure flared with blinding blue light. Every remaining Other on the field turned as one and began walking toward the throne, blue fire already leaking from their eyes and mouths. One by one they reached the base and collapsed, their essence pouring upward into the seat.

The throne grew.

Ice climbed higher. The fractures sealed. The Night King rose with it, larger, colder, the glass sword in his hand now longer than a man was tall. The white mist became a solid dome that even dragonflame struggled to pierce.

Rhaegar hovered outside the dome, chest heaving, the Silver Emperor's wounded leg trailing frost. The other two dragons circled warily, flames still burning but visibly weaker against the new intensity of the cold.

On the Wall the defenders saw the dome form and understood what it meant.

The Night King was no longer merely awakening.

He was completing himself.

Rhaegar wiped blood from his lip—whether his own or the dragon's he did not know—and raised True Dragon once more. Azure fire crawled along the blade, thinner now, but still alive.

"Then we finish it here," he said, voice raw but steady.

He turned the Silver Emperor's head toward the glowing dome and prepared to dive again.

Behind him, from Farwinter and the Wall, a single horn sounded—long, defiant, and unbroken.

The living were not done yet.
