An hour later.
"Rowan."
His mother's voice floated up the stairs, calm but firm, the way it always sounded when dinner was ready.
Rowan glanced down at himself. He had already changed out of the clothes he'd worn all day, swapping them for a loose pair of shorts and a light T-shirt that hung comfortably on his frame.
"Coming," he replied, running a hand through his hair as he stepped out of his room.
As he walked down the stairs, the familiar smell hit him.
Steak.
Not just any steak.
His dad's steak.
Rowan slowed unconsciously, his stomach tightening in anticipation. His father didn't cook often. Everyone in the house knew that. But when he did, it was always something special. Steak was his specialty. Thick cuts, perfectly seasoned, cooked just right, juicy, tender, the kind that made you close your eyes after the first bite.
By the time Rowan reached the bottom of the stairs, the dining room was already set.
