39 The seal
Naruto formed two shadow clones without breaking stride. They split off immediately, moving to the remains on the cave floor and retrieving the Akatsuki rings from Deidara and Sasori. Naruto sealed the Ninth Cutter back into his arm and turned toward Gaara.
He slowed as he reached him, then crouched in front of the Kazekage.
"So," Naruto said lightly, "how was the vacation, Lord Kazekage?"
Gaara shut one eye and let out a tired breath that almost passed for a laugh. "One out of five," he muttered. "Would not recommend. Ever."
Naruto smiled. "Fair."
Gaara's expression softened. "But… I'm alive."
"You are," Naruto said. "How's Shukaku?"
"He's… loud," Gaara admitted. "Still talking."
Naruto nodded. "Yeah. I figured. Give me your fist."
Gaara paused, confused, then slowly raised his hand. Naruto bumped it.
The world shifted.
They stood in the shared mindscape, pale sand stretching endlessly beneath their feet. Gaara was at the center, Shukaku looming behind him, bound within cracked, unstable pillars. Across from them stood Naruto, Kurama visible behind iron bars that rattled faintly with his presence.
Naruto frowned immediately. "Yeah. This seal is busted."
Shukaku pointed at Kurama with a clawed finger. "You! Nine-Tails! What are you doing here?"
Kurama rested his chin on one massive paw, unimpressed. "Saving your idiotic hide."
"I don't need saving," Shukaku snapped. "I am the great Shukaku, the Sand King."
Kurama snorted. "Sure. The great Shukaku who got beaten by a bomber and a puppet."
"That was Gaara's fault," Shukaku shot back. "If he'd let me transform, I'd have crushed them."
Gaara opened his eyes, calm but firm. "I won't release you. You'd destroy the village. As Kazekage, that's my responsibility."
Shukaku scoffed, but Kurama's voice cut in, lower and sharper.
"Enough."
Both Gaara and Shukaku stilled.
Kurama's eyes burned with something old and bitter. "Don't pretend you're above this. None of us chose these seals. And don't kid yourself. The Sage didn't favor us. He favored his bloodline. Indra. Ashura. Their descendants are the ones who put us in chains."
Shukaku bristled, then slowly quieted. He knew that tone. When Kurama spoke like that, it wasn't bluster.
Naruto stepped forward. "I'll fix it."
Shukaku glanced at him. "Fix it?"
"The seal," Naruto said. "It's faulty. It's not containing you properly. It's leaking into Gaara's mind, keeping you awake and making you both miserable."
Gaara looked at Naruto in surprise. "You can do that?"
"Yeah," Naruto said simply. "And after that, you're getting some real sleep."
The mindscape faded.
Back in the cave, Naruto lowered his fist and immediately went to work. His hands moved with precision as layered sealing formulas spread across Gaara's abdomen. Four reinforcing Heaven Seals locked into place, stabilizing the inner dimensional barrier.
Gaara sagged forward, unconscious before he could protest.
Naruto caught him and hoisted him onto his back. "Kazekage rescue mission," he said, straightening, "complete."
Shizune looked relieved, then curious. "Naruto… what did you do to Gaara's seal?"
"Fixed it," Naruto replied. "It wasn't letting him sleep. He'll be out for a day or two."
Chiyo stepped forward sharply. "Hold on. I designed that seal myself. It was meant to contain Shukaku completely."
Naruto glanced back at him. "You used the same seal you used on the teapot, didn't you?"
Chiyo hesitated. "It worked then."
"That was a non-living container," Naruto said. "Gaara's human. A bijuu seal needs a separate dimensional buffer linked to the host's mind, not bleeding into it. Your seal leaked. That's why Shukaku was restless and Gaara never slept."
Chiyo went quiet.
Naruto adjusted Gaara's weight on his back. "We're done here. I promised Temari I'd bring her brother back. And I'm not waiting around for more Akatsuki to show up."
No one argued.
They moved out together, disappearing into the forest, the Kazekage alive and breathing, and the balance of the desert restored.
